Very Preliminary Talk About Holding 2026 Winter Olympics in the U.S.

It's unusual but not unheard of for a country to host two Olympics in a row.

It’s a longshot, but there’s talk in Salt Lake City, and even some in Denver, of a bid for the 2026 Winter Games, which take place two years before the Summer Olympics return to Los Angeles...

Five people familiar with internal discussions in both cities told The Associated Press that preliminary talks have taken place about what it would take to bring the Winter Games back to the United States for the first time since Salt Lake hosted in 2002. None of the people wanted their names used because the discussions are preliminary, and because the U.S. Olympic Committee wants to stay focused on the Los Angeles bid for the 2028 Olympics.

Isn't there always talk about Denver wanting the Winter Olympics? I'd love for 2026 to happen in Denver because that's where I reside, but I'm unsure the residents of the city would actually want to host an Olympic Games TBH.

SLC would make the most sense, since they had it already and it would take less to revamp existing structures back to Olympic use.

I wish the Olympics were confined to those cities that could best host it. Why build all the stuff if you've got a city that has most of it already?

Seriously. It could be like the Compulsory Dance: there's a rotating list, and every once in a while, a new dance gets in because it's substantially there already.

The only thing I don't like about SLC hosting it is that it'll be in that the figure skating events will be in an arena where the attendees are super high up. I know the Olympic venues in the past few years have taken out seating in the first few rows, but the Vivint Smart Home Area has especially high seats. It's a very minor grievance that only affects figure skating and short-track though, so it's not that big of a deal.
