US Ice Dance 2024-25 News & Updates

For what it's worth, according to the official Athlete Selection Criteria, Wolfkostin/Tsarevski's JW medal has them officially 3rd ranked of the US teams, behind Chock/Bates and Carreira/Ponomarenko. I don't think they're really seriously being considered for the Olympic team unless they've made some truly incredible strides, but as they're technically 3rd in line at the moment I understand inviting them. I'm curious to see if Zingas/Kolesnik being left off is a mistake or not. If it is, a correction will probably be issued soon, and imo that's the most likely explanation.

afaik, USFS did not name a National Team for recent Olympic seasons.
So in recent Olympic seasons, USFS was not fundraising "to support U.S. Figure Skating's National Team."

Yes, my impression was that financial support for the Olympic figure skating team's loved ones to travel to "Destination Sochi," "Destination PyeongChang," etc., seemed to be the entire point of those USFS fundraising campaigns.

From Skating Magazine article by Brent Diederich in 2017-18 season:
"... More than $80,000 was raised through donations for 2014 Destination Sochi, which was the first program designed to help financially support athletes' families traveling to the Games. The money was shared equally among each of the 15 U.S. Olympic Team members. ...
This Olympic year, the estimated cost of attending the Olympic Winter Games in Korea is $7,200 per person. And just as our athletes are raising the bar, we will, too. U.S. Figure Skating has set a goal of $105,000 to help our 14 yet-to-be-named Olympians. ...
Join us by going to DestinationPyeongChang.com to help send family members to the 2018 Games. ..."

Because of the pandemic, "Destination Beijing" families and friends were brought together in La Jolla to watch the Olympics together.​

At least so far, I see no sign that announcing "National Team" athletes this time around is part of analogous "Destination Milan" fundraising.
If(?) USFS is raising funds for the purpose of funneling extra money (on top of envelope money) to National Team athletes many months before selection of the Olympic Team, transparency to donors about National Team selection criteria would not seem like too much to ask. IMO.

But ... from USFS 2026 Olympic selection criteria's Calculation of Overall Data, the current order of points (so far only from 2024-25 season) is: C/B, C/P, W/T, Z/K, G/P.
As things stand now, B/S have zero points. Same for S/S.

The procedure for Calculation of Overall Athlete Performance Data is explained in Appendix B on page 18 at the link from Karen.
The bottom of the chart addresses results from 2024-25 season.

Karen does not need a reminder, but I think it bears repeating for others that placements in Calculation of Overall Athlete Performance Data are not an automatic ticket to the Olympics.
Top 5 placement in the full Calculation at the time of Olympic selection is one of several ways to get into the pool of athletes who will be considered.

By my math, the points earned for 2024-25 season:
C/B 330 = [12 (for first at Worlds) + 6 (second Four Continents) + 4 (first Nats)] x 15
C/P 150 = [5 (fifth Worlds) + 3 (fourth Four Continents) + 2 (second Nats)] x 15
W/T 120 = [8 (second Junior Worlds) + 0 (seventh Nats)] x 15
Z/K 45 = [3 (fifth Four Continents) + 0 (fourth Nats)] x 15
G/P 30 = [0 (ninth Worlds) + 2 (third Nats)] x 15
B/S 0 = 0 (sixth Nats) x 15
(I think only the most recent Olympic Games and Worlds count, so S/S so far have zero points.)
 
The Appendix B table looks interesting. Only ISU championships count for the previous season.

The table makes me think that the more you compete, the better, since it does not take "success rate" into account. Of course there is a limit to how many competitions you can enter. But there seems to be an incentive for skaters to do more CS/senior B/junior international for the next season if they feel ready.

Well, sure, bur understand that the Int'l Committee controls how many assignments a skater/team gets.

True -- but a positive byproduct of today's GP assignments is that they shut down once and for all some of yesterday's theorizing in this thread.

Z/K do continue to represent the U.S. 🇺🇸; they do plan to compete this season; etc.

ETA:​

Social media from some National Team skaters referred to traveling to "Leave Your Mark Camp" in Colorado Springs this weekend. "Camp" make it sounds like something more for them (something beneficial to them?) than participating in the USOPM Leave Your Mark promotional event.​

Of skaters with two GP assignments, the only skaters excluded from the National Team are Z/K and Broussard.​

National Team skaters with one GP (as of initial announcement of assignments): Pulkinen, Naumov, Chan/Howe, McBeath/Parkman, Plazas/Fernandez, Wolfkostin/Tsarevski.​

One reason Zingas/Kolesnik weren’t included may be because skaters are obliged to participate in the fundraising event this weekend. ZK are unavailable as they’re currently en route to Italy for Benoit’s camp next week.

Interesting. It certainly doesn't feel like all of the skaters who are listed on as members of the National Team are in Colorado Springs - at least not yet. Off the top of my head, just scrolling through various skaters' as well as the USFS' IG stories today & yesterday traveling or already there -

Women - Alysa, Sarah, Bradie, Elyce
Men - Camden, Max
Pairs - KamO, McBPark, PlaFern, FlorWang (who aren't included in the group of athletes named, but were definitely planned as part of the weekend as their names were listed on some of the super-sized signage at the USOPC Museum)
Dance - BraSom, GreenP, WolfTsar

It looks like ChoBat may be flying out tonight - Madison posted a pic earlier from an airport. Jason has been in Greece on vacation - posted pics earlier this week, but he may already be back in the States & en route.

Amber & Isabeau's names are also listed in some of the super-sized signage, but Amber was up in Ft Collins today at Gracie Gold's "Road 2 Gold Destination Colorado" training camp - she may appear tomorrow at the USOPC.

The Shibs appear to be in Ft Myers this week/today getting choreo with Massimo - they posted on their IG a sunset pic with the location tag of Ft Myers about an hour ago.

Christina Carreira has been on vacation in Sicily this past week.
 
I saw the Shibs post a video in Fort Myers, FL and i'd tell one of you to go do some spy work for us if I didn't know they were going to be at the usfs fan event thing this weekend (or thus saith usfs)

Right? I could have sworn I saw the USFS advertise that the Shibs would be there, then up pops the Ft Myers stuff today, lol. Mind, I presume all that was filmed this past week and not today, but the sunset pic with the location tag of Ft Myers made me question everything the USFS said, lol.

Well Christina said they'd be there on Sunday too which is a quick turnaround from her sun filled vacay lol it'd be a much shorter flight for the shibs they can red-eye it over

I'll be curious to see which other skaters listed on the National Team show up tomorrow.
 
The vid ftom Ft. Myers could have been filmed a while ago. From what I've heard, Massimo is doing choreo in Europe all month, but maybe his 'choreo tour' included the Shibs/FL.

The Shibs were advertised as being at the USOPC event tomorrow/Sunday and they shared the post so I assume they will be there.

I have seen no mention of Ilia or Jason in any of the promotional content for the USOPM Leave Your Mark weekend.
If these two fan favorites were scheduled to be there tomorrow, I think it would be strange for promotional stuff not to take advantage of their popularity.
If they are not at USOPM tomorrow, then it would not seem mandatory (at least not completely) for the National Team to participate in the weekend? If(?) there were some kind of rule, I suppose it's not unthinkable that it could be bent for a two-time world champion. And maybe even for a veteran like Jason? 🤔

Anyway, because this thread is for ice dance: I enjoyed the glimpses on social media of Caroline Green and Michael Parsons today!
(And of other skaters too.)

It's now Sunday, and Jason still is in Greece, sharing some breathtaking photos/videos of today's sights and sounds.​

Definitely. They were cute leading the dance off with the little kids.

It does feel like the USFS has split the appearance duties for all the skaters/teams and only required them to appear 1 day of the weekend. We'll see who pops up tomorrow!
