[Updated: out of JPN nationals] Hanyu pulls out of 2017 NHK Trophy with right ankle injury

Yuzuru has nothing to prove, he has a name for himself edged on skating history forever

Hope he thinks about his own condition and health beyond skating, if there comes a time on this next 50 days until the games and he is not prepared then though it will be a big blow and loss he has to come first as a person more than a skater and all the fuzz and business around him

Will be tough for him to heal AND train to get where he was before the injury though at the time he was dealing with some back problems iirc
Well, he has 2 months before the Olympics, he will be ok by that time I think so. I guess he will do 4CC to get used to competition again.

I am heartbroken. I wish Hanyu a full recovery and a long career ahead, regardless of what happens in the 2018 Olympics.

This just sucks. :(:(:( Get well soon Pooh!!

And of course, quads are part of the sports development, but if one is to do all those difficult quads, one must train and compete smart. Do not try a quad lutz when you've been out with the flu and don't feel 100% fit. Listen to your body. Of course, if the Olympic gold is at stake, go all in, win or loose, but not in some "lame" GP. But of course, Yuzu is the one skating in the GP earlier with a large bandage around his head. He's so driven. It felt really weird, I wasn't watching rugby or soccer, it wasn't Stuart Pierce out there with blood running down his shirt, no, it was figure skating. Bling and bandage. So I realize he's hard to stop. I'm crossing everything there is to cross that he'll be ready for the Olympics! Wise decision to skip Nationals.

A little bit off topic, but.... Kerstin Frank posted on Instagram that she had a major concussion at Tallin trophy, but didn't take enough time to rest and instead tried to compete at Santa Claus cup in Budapest. Only first half of her FS there is available on YT, but it's not nice to watch. Mid-program she falls really hard on a spin, you can hear her hit the ice, and the I think she interrupts the program. -9 deductions.... Not worth it. I really wish the skaters would...yes, again...listen to their bodies! Take care of them and don't push to hard. And we even had a discussion about concussions here on FSU not so long ago. Get well soon Kerstin!!!

This must be a nightmare for him! (Paraphrase from CUTTING EDGE). But really. Aside form wanting to compete, it is an Olympic Year, the OLYS are in his back yard, and he has a chance to make history as the first man to win back to back in 66 years. (And that would be our very own Uncle Dick). Yuzru is in his early 20's. He cannot possibly have the perspective, experience and patience it would take to chose his health and sit this out. He is in a really hard place. I just hope he has people around him who he can trust and to whom he will listen.

Well, he has 2 months before the Olympics, he will be ok by that time I think so. I guess he will do 4CC to get used to competition again.
He's also got the option of competing in the Team Event at the Olympics as a warm up for the Men's event. Japan isn't likely to win a medal and Hanyu would get a chance to do his short program, and maybe the free, just to get a competitive skate under his belt before his main event.

Sochi champion Hanyu named in Japan team for Pyeongchang: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...d-in-japan-team-for-pyeongchang-idUSKBN1EJ08P
He has not competed since [Rostelecom Cup] and will miss the Four Continents championships next month in Taiwan in order to make sure he is ready for the Winter Olympics, Japan Skating Federation director Yoshiko Kobayashi told Kyodo.
“Considering the time we have until the Olympics, (the JFA) believes that he can make a comeback,” Kobayashi said. “I hope he drives the young athletes as Japan’s ace.”
Hanyu has resumed training but is not practising jumps just yet, Kobayashi added.

I wouldn't count him out if he is fit enough to skate two programs. I hope he will be fit enough to skate thise in the 2018 Olympics.

Can't wait to send the link of that NYT article to family and friends. When I tell people I'm following figure skating again, they look at me like I just said I was following professional bowling. As it was Hanyu who pulled me back into the sport, this lovely article may give them a better understanding of why I go on and on about this remarkable creature.

Hanyu is a savage, if anyone can pull off a victory against all odds its him.

I agree, he's a savage....when he's on.
I don't follow his career super closely but I believe he tends to perform his best when he's really well trained. For that reason I'm not as optimistic as I'd like to be...
