U.S. Women [#8]: Meet Me in St. Louis

Wow, Alysa went in a totally different direction with her gaga dress… kind of in the direction of the MacArthurs park dress but Silver.

They both work, the first red and black dress was more literal and performative, but I think the silver dress will be much easier to skate in.

I like this dress a lot - but it's SILVER! I remember an interview with Cecilia Coolidge - who skated at the same time as Sonja Henie - where she talked about her mother making her a silver dress for the Olympics. She felt like her mother had just given up on the idea of winning Gold and she was so disappointed in having a silver dress. I'm sure Alysa has thought about that and, again, I like the dress.

I just think about the fact that it's silver.

Here is another good one about the close friendship between the three and how they stayed at the rink to watch each other perform their short programs.
I credit all three of these women for the level of the respect and fun they have. I remember a press conference a couple of years ago when Isabeau gushed about Amber and said that anyone who doesn't love Amber should have their brain scanned. Amber clearly had been very kind and supportive of fifteen year-old Isabeau. I think Amber set the tone and Isabeau and Alyssa have added to it. It has been clear over the last few years that Isabeau really enjoys becoming friends with her competitors, including Alysa. And Alysa has come back to competition to enjoy herself, not get cutthroat.

The reporters at last night's press conference seemed fascinated by how well they get along, but I think all three of them make it clear why there doesn't need to be any conflicts off ice and why they respect and enjoy each other.

Here's a link to the very entertaining press conference from last night:

Excatly. It would be nice if someone could give her an advice to go back to her natural color or, at least, to get rid of these highlights before Olympics. These highlights are distraction and turns away to experience her skating.
I wonder if her coaches can do this or anyone from her fellow Americans. IT seems like a small detail, but for a mosaic to be complete... even one single detail is significant.
Alysa has made it clear that she’s going to do whatever she wants

I wonder if the publicity about Gracie's experiences allowed for this camaraderie to develop, or if it would have happened anyway because of who these 3 are as people.

Isabeau talks in the press conference about it being who they are. But, Amber has spoken repeatedly about watching the tension between the older skaters when she was younger and not liking it. So, it's probably a combination.

Ashley and Gracie were clearly not friendly. I don’t know how Karen, Mariah and Bradie got along in their day, they all seemed very nice but that’s part of the ice princess requirement.

When someone is described as super-competitive (like Sarah last night) I assume that’s code for the “I’m not here to make friends” behavior you see in reality shows.

Maybe not tempting Fate - see Michelle Kwan and the "Fields of Gold" 2002 dress.

Here's a photo of Alysa's new dress. Her coach says it's platinum and diamonds, not silver:

plushenko's platinum medal is in danger

Oh wow in the photo I posted it looks shiny and metallic like the gold MacArthurs park dress.

It’s giving me Carol Channing in Thoroughly Modern Millie vibes.

Another day, another endorsement deal for Alysa!
And Alysa is ALSO a part of Team Samsung!

Or she didn't spend a lot of time comparing her costume color to medals and just picked out what she wanted to skate in.

On the episode of The Runthrough that was recorded today, Adam Rippon told a fun story about how he once was advised in a monitoring session to change his hair (which was a purplish blonde) because the judges might not like it. Adam changed it. He joked that Alysa would just do what she wanted and that nobody would say anything to her about her hair for fear she would retire.

But, according to them, Alysa brought toner with her and was getting her hair done today.

Now I see why Alysa’s dress took so long to make, all that detail and shredding and whatnot.

I’m also surprised when she speaks because she’s got the opposite of the squeaky Kerri Strug voice. She sounds like she should be explaining US foreign policy with that mature alto!
