TV host Regis Philbin has died at 88

Having an uncommon name, a frantic-at-times delivery, and an infectious personality, all this made him hard to ignore or forget. And, just as impressionist Rich Little did by inventing and introducing "Well?....." into our Ronald Reagan lexicon. Dana Carvey did with "And I'm OUT OF CONTROL!" (which Regis never said). R. I. P. Reeg.

I follow a number of the local New York ABC affiliate news people on twitter and they've been consistent in not only recognizing his impressive career but commenting how kind and encouraging he was to them when they were just starting out at the station (the local news films in the same building as Live filmed).

RIP Regis. It's an impressive accomplishment to last that long in the entertainment business and to have such success later in life.

Ugh, this one made me so sad. He was such a ball of energy and I loved him on WWTBAM. This year really does suck. RIP Regis. :fragile:

Funny clip with Meryl Streep :

Wall Street Journal sports writer Jason Gay wrote a column about Regis. it's behind a pay wall, but this part is a nice tribute and consistent with what the local newscasters mentioned:

I guess I could go on about his career and accomplishments, as many others have, but I've reached the point in my own life when what I remember most about someone is whether or not they were kind. "Crowd Goes Wild" lasted barely eight months before getting canceled -- a minor blip in Philbin's career -- but in that time, I saw him be endlessly kind. He was kind to my wife. He was kind to my infant son. He was kind to my mom, my friends, my in-laws. He was kind to my father, who, we didn't know it at the time, didn't have much longer to live. My mom reminded me of that this weekend.

Meeting someone behind the scenes, Regis would be sweet and gentle, but he'd also give them a little of that Regis Philbin energy, because it was what people expected -- hoped for -- when they met him. They'd grown up watching him, and now he was right there, in front of them, the person. He delivered. He knew how to be the Regis everyone wanted him to be.
