Speaking of Madison's genetic predispositions. It's never shown what Madison is "sipping" all the time. Usually only alcohol is sipped like that. But I don't believe a bottle of alcohol was ever shown.
There is bottle of alcohol in the scene where Maddie and Travis make out in the car - I think Travis was holding it and it looked like whiskey.

Madison assaulting her ill child was really strange to me. I thought she was going to hug him. Her reaction made me wonder if he was going to walk out in front of a speeding military vehicle out of desperation. What an un-Motherly act from her...
I thought her anger was understandable, as she knew Nick had been stealing the morphine, and he had refused help from the medical person who came by.
The person making the flashes from the building outside the gates will tell the story. Which is why I think it's Tobias in the building.
We rewound, and concluded that the flashes might be gunshots, not an appeal for help.

Why the heck would you sneak out when 1. you don't know what actually happened with the zombies; 2. you don't know what's out there (safety wise); and most importantly 3. you are compromising the safety of the whole neighbourhood by cutting the wire fence open.
Because you don't yet believe or know the zombie apocalypse has arrived. Because denial kicks in in such a situation, especially when you trust authorities who say they have the situation under control. Maybe a Syrian refugee or someone in a similar situation would be inclined to not trust the authorities, but that would not been the case in suburban middle class LA.
A while earlier, Maddie was repainting the walls of her house and trying to get rid of the blood. That's not something she would do if she knew the apocalypse was nigh and survival became the sole focus.
Perhaps not even all the authorities yet know the truth. In a situation like this, collective panic can do as much damage as the actual epidemic.
The removal of people who are at risk of dying is one concrete sign that people are turning zombie, but no one wants to advertise that as of yet.

I'm kind of bummed we skipped nine days. I wanted to see society start to fall; I wanted to see what happened outside the fence. I feel like all the really cool stuff is happening off screen. THERE WAS NOT ONE ZOMBIE IN THIS ENTIRE EPISODE.
This community is a safe zone, hence no zombies. Containment is a natural response to an epidemic and contained people will be isolated and safe at least temporarily. They will hang on to old routines and emotional baggage.
It's only been nine days. I don't know at which point TWD picked up - Rick had been in a coma for maybe a month?
The collapse of government/police will be the next step towards total mayhem and breakdown.
