With G/P, I don't feel that Lane has found a way to mask their weaknesses.
Well, she can't transform them in what they are not. And yes, some programs are a miss.
But I find her good actually and often original. At least as a choreographer, I think a lot more ID couples could benefit from her.

I was watching again G&P and I was wondering, with all the people crowded at Dubreuil camp, how can more people don't go to Carol Lane? I think she has done a great job with G&P both as skaters and programs. Especially, I always loved their programs.
I would never want to go to a coach who doesn't even bother going to the Olympics to support her team! WTF?? She thought being in the commentary booth was more important than her coaching job?

That's quite a big assumption - how do you know that Gilles/Poirier don't prefer to travel with Juris Razgulajevs? He's the person whose normally in the kiss'n cry with them.

I was wondering about it actually. Was Carol doing the commentary? I only heard Brenda, Tessa and Scott. Other times when she has done commentary she has also been in K&C, so I'm not sure is for that reason.

Carol was not. Did she do ladies? Osmond did the previews.
I only saw the ladies on CBC for the second flight, and Kaetlyn was there. I ended up on the international feed after that, because it was taking too long for them to come back from other sports.

Carol was there for the Men's, though, IIRC.

I have gotten the impression over the years that Carol and Juris don’t want to take direct competitors of Piper and Paul.

Anyone else they have taken on have been ranked quite a bit lower.

It will be interesting to see what they do when Piper and Paul retire.

I don't think it's done that much for Soucisse/Firus. Is this their first or second season with Lane? Hopefully, next season will be better for them.

It sounds like the best news for them is Piper & Paul are retiring. I kind of doubt they will even go to worlds, but it seems they are set on definitely not going beyond that. They are too close to Paul, and it fuddles their thinking.

With Piper & Poirier retiring, they will atleast be the Lanes #1 team, unless someone new comes in. That should help them. Although I am not convinced the Lanes are that good anyway.

I saw on another thread that S/K have said they’re going to Worlds? I just don’t get what’s in it for them given they are the reigning champions and will be facing P/C on home ice…

I thought they’d take the OSM and retire as World Champions. Of course, I also want them to get out of the way for S/B to finally be Russian #1 lol.

I wonder if they want to end everything in front of a crowd.

I expect to see most of the medalists at worlds this year, unlike most Olympic years, because of the crowd being able to be there.

They most likely feel responsible for helping hold on to 3 spots for next year. It might be doable without them but seems much harder. And I think they like performing for a crowd, like most skaters, so it is probably a more positive way to end the year, even though their Olympics experience has been good and they seem to have enjoyed it.

Are Stepanova & Bukin continuing after this season? I know we are speculating that about a lot of times.

I do think a lot of the teams who have said/seem sure to retire like Hubbell & Donohue, & Gilles & Poirier, Sinitsina & Katsalapov, and possibly Papadakis & Cizeron are going to worlds in order to secure more spots for their country for next year. Although Hubbell & Donohue could still skip and very likely maintain 3, but Canada and Russia would be much dicier. Heck based on the Olympic results, Canada will have a big fight even with their best teams.

I still remember Worlds in 2003 in the US. The atmosphere was really unpleasant for some of the skaters in the ice dance competition. It really brings down the atmosphere as a whole IMO. Whereas, for example, 2000 in Nice, A/P got their standing Os and there were some jeers for F-P/M (not cool), but the Italians got a much more enthusiastic response in general compared to some of the pairs in Washington.

Yeah, I assume the Rus Fed has asked SinKats to tack on Worlds so that they and StepBukin can secure three spots for next year. Would be difficult with Davis/Smolkin, I think. Not impossible, but difficult.
I assume. I also assume the Russian Fed would have liked Bobrova & Soloviev to go to Worlds after the last Olympics & they didn't go, so it would not shock me if Sinitsina & Katsalapov did withdraw before we get to Worlds. Though if they've said they plan to go, I'll take them at their word.

Gilles & Poirier, I assume, will want to go out with a better skate. Go to Worlds. Give it their best shot.

Papadakis & Cizeron, I assume, will be expected at a home Worlds; and for them, the audience very well might be a deciding factor.

This is a weird year because with covid restrictions, etc., I've no idea how much post-Olympic press all these athletes will be able to jump at. Usually, that kind of thing is much more consuming than the medalists realize it will be, and vague plans to go to Worlds often fall by the wayside.

I still would not be remotely shocked if 1-3 top teams decided to pass on Worlds, but if there are fewer post-Olympic opportunities, there may be less incentive to do so & fewer distractions from training.

Nikita has said that he needs back surgery and they want to continue after the back surgery is done. Wouldn’t it make more sense for their future careers to get the surgery as soon as they get back to Russia so they have more time to recover and can miss less of next season?

Ah well, what do I know. It would be near impossible to keep three spots with StepBuk and Diana Davis. StepBuk are looking at fourth, at best, behind the French and two American teams. Can Diana Davis place ninth? Probably not. They were 14th at the Olympics. They’re never beating the top six teams, and I doubt they can beat teams like F-B/S, F/G, S/D, or H/B (at least they shouldn’t be beating them)

I haven’t seen these particular Katsalapov comments but even though they’re all saying similar things at the moment I think there’s increasingly clear categories of teams who are continuing for at least a season or two (Guignard/Fabbri, CanaDanes), those who have parked the decision till after the season (Chock/Bates, Smart/Diaz) and those who are probably done but aren’t ready to announce it yet (Papadakis/Cizeron and IMO Sinitsina/Katsalapov too). Then there’s Hubbell/Donohue who couldn’t wait to tell us all season how ready to be done they are.

But no-one is as done with it all as Tabitha Belbin was in Vancouver.

I didn't attend Worlds in 2003, but in any case, that was almost 20 years ago now.

Worlds 2016 in Boston had fantastic crowds that cheered energetically for almost everyone, as many of the non-U.S. skaters spoke of at the time (including S/K and Deniss Vasiljevs, as I specifically remember).

The US also hadn't started a war that week.
