The Dance Hall 9: Bring the Bling or No Beijing 2021-2022

There's nothing to be done about it unfortunately. Krylova is so many miles away in Russia and she's still essentially body shaming her former student in the press.
I doubt the judges are basing their opinions on a former coach's rantings in interviews. But I'm sure there are some judges out there that have outdated ideas of how skaters and dance teams should look (I'm sure there are also judges who dislike C/B b/c of their height difference).

But H/D are not at the same level as P/C and it has nothing to do with the size or shape of their bodies. Judges are looking for effortless flow (and that's true in all disciplines and levels) and H/D's skating does not look effortless. They have almost a 'freestylers doing dance' look about them.....i.e. powering through. They have great power and edge quality (why their RDs score so high) but so do P/C, who also have better overall quality, plus more ability to actually dance to a rhythm. And H/D have had some not-so-good programs over the last quad and a tendency to make significant errors at critical moments.

I agree that P&C are unmatched, but H&D really should have been given the benefit of the doubt vs Sitnitsina and Katsalapov. Between the two teams, I felt like H&D were closer to P&C than S&K were in terms of quality of movement and performance detail.

Between S&K and Zhulin, I don't know what is worse; their horrible politics , or their horrible choreography.

No, I still haven't forgiven any of them for that stupid-ass jig.

I think H/D would’ve been battling for the gold if judges let less “conventional” body lines win - the fact that they are such incredible skaters but are leaving the sport without a world title is honestly a travesty
It's also their choice.

I don't blame them for deciding to get out now. There are no guarantees about this coming season, and there were even fewer at the end of last year when Hubbell & Donohue were probably setting goals and a time table for themselves, looking at finances, life goals, etc. They've been in the hot seat at home for four years, and that's a lot. But considering current world events + Nikita's injury, they could have had an excellent shot at a world title by staying in; and they are choosing to say, "This is enough." They earned an individual and a team Olympic medal.

I did ask H/D at Worlds if there was any chance of them changing their minds. Mainly because I'm not ready to say good-bye, LOL.

As expected, they just laughed. :D

I admire their self-assuredness and equanimity around this decision, which is so hard to make. It's a blessing that they know themselves well enough to sense when it was time to step away and that they're okay with it.

I saw lots of hugs between them at Worlds, lots of holding hands. I think they were determined to enjoy every last moment of this 10-year journey together.

My brain has gone into the off season mindset already, and I am now playing around with terrible alternate timeline scenarios.
What if V&M had not come back? P&C would have had an easy road to an OGM in 2018 and may not have gone to 2022 given all of the difficulties they faced during the pandemic.
In other words, that stupid-ass jig might have been OGM :scream:

Interview with Nazarova/Nikitin:

Apparently Druncle wants to come back next season. Didn't give a second thought to attending a certain rally

I say this every year, but seriously the ROC is just the gift that keeps on giving. You cannot make this stuff up. Ever.

A post somewhere this week said he was dealing with a back injury this year. I gathered, then, that it was a different injury that the one he had surgery for.
I think he did but I did not catch everything I saw so did not mention it. Basically he might not have been at full strength until fairly close to competitions.

It's a cultural thing. I don't think it even makes sense to be upset. All the top Russian Ice dance teams have that aesthetic as the ideal.
I was just thinking of what else she did or said to the teams she coached. How far would she go.

And we all know it’s not just Krylova who does it - I genuinely believe we need better systems in place to protect young women in this sport. What needs to happen is that if you refuse to look after your athletes health (both physical and mental) then you don’t get a license to coach, simple as.

You preachin it to the choir hun. But who knows, maybe some could be influenced for the better....

We need to protect men as well. It’s not just women who get body shamed in this sport.

Oh yes. Tell Zach D.
@sap5 is not wrong, Denis Khodykin is the first male skater that comes to my mind as a male skater who talked about his struggles with weight. And I definitely read several comments regarding his appearance and weight over the years.
That being said, while it is an issue, it's not nearly as bad as what female athletes have to endure.

Were there any problems with her and Weaver/Poje? Apparently they left as they felt they needed a new look etc. as they were at a standstill.

I don't think Weaver/Poje ever said something about Krylova in regards to body shaming. However, Madi Hubbell, Kaitlin Hawayek, and Betina Popova all strongly hinted that she messed with their heads regarding it, and Krylova herself gave troubling quotes in the past and didn't shy from body shaming Tessa Virtue and Madi Hubbell in the press.

Thanks....that is so gross.

I have seen Weaver in person and she so much thinner than she looks in film/print. To my eye she comes by that naturally, very similar in height/body proportion to my daughters friend. So if Krylova held the other girls to that standard it would have been impossible for them to achieve.
