Like the doctor said, minor just needs rest. I hope they do take some time to evaluate things. But more importantly there should be no more competitions for this season. They need to work on their mental game and lift technique. They have a whole quad to look forward t

Pity though he's so talented and so prone to injury. He's rather fragile, maybe it plays on his mind and caused him to withdraw. He's had issues now with his back, shoulder, leg and arm. You name it he's suffered through it.

I never said Kataalpov has no talent. He obviously has talent, seeing that he won two Olympic medals with Elena. I was talking about S/K as a team.
 
Wanted to share some thoughts on Popova/Mozgov after RusNats :)

They definitely were one of my pleasant surprises at those Nationals.
This team has slowly became one of my favorites. In the begging I was sure that this pairing won’t work at all but they have proved me wrong.
Yes, they didn’t have any pressure on their shoulders but still they gave two great performances and were one of the crowd’s favorites. For me their FD is actually one of the best choreographed dances this season (not talking about top teams here but still). Iirc, Rumyantseva’s group has problems with ice and training facilities , so I really hope that their placement at Nationals (they were forth) will help them and their coaches to get more ice.

And I really like their personalities , they seem to be funny and easygoing :)
Betina was rooting for everyone during the SD (they were the first one to skate)

I really hope they go as well. I love their programs this season and it would be nice if they are in the running for a medal with them at 4CC.
 
Some of the teams likely to be there, with SB in brackets : Hawayek/Baker (165.20), Parsons/Parsons (163.14), McNamara/Carpenter (160.51), Muramoto/Reed (159.30), Soucisse/Firus (154.60), Pogrebinsky/Benoit (154.14), Min/Gamelin (152.00), Wang/Liu (151.17).

Only 3 of the US teams will go, and that's not an in depth analysis of the teams, how consistently they score there, etc. But M/R are definitely in the medal mix.
 
If those are the teams my ideal podium would be Hawayek/Baker, Muramoto/Reed and the second revelation of the year after M/R for me Wang/Liu.
So is there any chance of some of the top teams to go or is it just too close to the Olympics ?
 
Don't think Canada has said whether any of their Olympic qualifying athletes might go. Sylvia has posted that none of the U.S. Olympic qualifying athletes will go. Canada might choose differently. (And there are a few reasons why they might in dance). If they don't . . .

A few notes:
-Scores have essentially been split by the 8 teams listed in Rose Red's post above.
-Muramoto & Reed, Wang & Liu, and Min & Gamelin have all traded placements over the last three seasons.
-With the exception of the U.S. Classic, Hawayek & Baker are the only team on this list cracking 100 points in the FD (unless one counts senior B events). It is making the difference for them in their total scores.
-The Parsons (67.48) and McNamara & Carpenter (63.65) have higher SB scores in the SD. The general range for most of the teams on the list above is between 60-64 in the short dance. Seven teams from the list have hit within that range during the SD this season.

For Canada, I think it will depend on if anyone wants to go to 4CC and then stay and train in Asia until Olympics (maybe someone will? I have no idea.)

But it's a bit tight to go over and come back and then go over again for Olympics.
 
For Canada, no dance teams going to the Olympics went to 4CC in 2014 or 2010, though the Olympics weren't also in Asia those years. There might be a possibility G/P do it if they feel they need more run throughs on their new FD.

Please help me like their FD more. I think I just don't understand what it's supposed to bring for a Carmen program. To me, it looks like an homage to K/O's 1998 FD. Like Popova is a somewhat toned down version of Krylova, and Mozgov is channeling the upper body intensity in movement of Ovsiannikov.

And the problem with that is . . .?

It's the best Carmen of the season, IMO. And a homage to Krylova & Ovsiannikov with a slightly toned down Anjelika is pretty much the tone of Carmen to a tea. Could use more powerful skating and smoother entrances & exits from the elements; but for a brand new team, it highlights Betina's performance strength, uses the music well, and has some original positions that fit the character.

It's a winner for them. Last season, they finished behind Lorenz & Polizoakis and Agafanova & Ucar at Golden Spin. And that was a successful result compared to the rest of P&M's season. I confess that I cannot remember their program from last year.

No, this year's FD isn't ground-breaking. But we aren't talking about a team fighting for a world medal here. We're talking about one trying to break onto the GP and position themselves among the Russian teams at home for the next quadrennium.

Popova & Mozgov have done that, IMO. A very successful season for a young team in their second year together. (They've had @6 solid performances of the free, which is more than one can usually ask from a new team in their second season). It isn't their SD that has done the job. It's the free. They have technical issues that are going to take some serious work in the long run; but this free shows off their strengths and has gotten them in the door. Medals at two Challengers, a spot at Rostelecom, first alternates for Europeans. Currently 18th on the SB list & in a very good position to reap more competitive opportunities this coming season. (Last year they were 29th, which was better than 4 teams that received non-host GP invites but not high enough to score a non-host GP invite when fighting for a place among the Russian field).

Geez. There's no objective problem, of course. It's a subjective taste thing about derivative programs being distracting and a turn-off, so I was trying to see what others liked about it. The rest of your post is about the positioning this FD allowed them to have, not about liking the program itself, so I'm just quoting the parts that are about the program. I do agree more or less with all of the above. Thanks for responding.

Japan can qualify to participate in the two portions of Olympic Team competition?, so , Kana and Chris will participate in 4cc, the olympic team event (SD and FD) and the olympic individual event?. It's not that I'm complaining, although I hope it's not too much. And they going to participate in Milan too, of course.

Speaking of Spanish teams: All judges clearly preferred H/K to S/D, including ESP and USA :shuffle:

It's the point-difference that is the issue not the placement, obviously H/K were going to be ahead. Smart/Diaz lost the Olympic spot to 0.95 point only.

But now, we know that the Spanish federation knew about this situation the whole time, I wonder if they consciously, or unconsciously, favored to S/D at Nationals to try compensate it. By the way, it seems they invited to a Canadian and a British judge (Olivia is British) to Nationals, and this British person went to Spain exclusively to judge Ice dance. No Russian judge, of course. If they decide change their mind, they should to do another competition.

I did thought about it tbh, there is a possibility (but then S/D were very clean on the SD).
At this point, unless something "too big" comes out of this investigation, I don't thing anything is going to change for the Euros, Olys, and World spots.

I don't know the criterias...
I only know they'll make the announcement of the complete olympic team after Euros (if I recall correctly).

EDIT : ok so I looked and there're no definite criterias, the federation will take into account the results of the skaters over the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 season. I think L/L's experience of senior competitions could play in their favor over A/T maybe... Plus French nationals 2 weeks ago didn't help A/T's case I think..
