They did it two years already. I was all for it the second season because they had had a shortened season due to withdrawing from Europeans & Worlds, but I don't like to see this trend happen in ice dance. I don't like to see it happen in any discipline, but dance has really set itself apart from the other disciplines via it's originality within the programs. I'd hate to see that change.

I agree @Dobre. Have we ever seen this amount of program throwbacks in an Olympic season?

I'm with you on this. Especially since it's extremely rare that an ID program works from the very first (or 2nd) outing. You always need to adjust choreo, levels, you need feedback too. Even if you take an old program, the rules change, e.g. WeaPo "Je suis malade".
That's "Okay" for Coomes/Buckland though because frankly they've been through too much. But I don't like this trend either.

I really liked their new program. But I think it's so hard for the dancers to do anything new and innovative, it's like the judges seem to be stuck in the mud of yesteryear or something. What's the turnover rate on these judges, do they serve for three years then sit out the fourth or something? ID needs some new blood or something if a good team would just give up on a great program like that.

I think there is much more diversity in ID though. There is innovation, but on an Olympic year people are scared. It does take time to reach a spot on interpretation and performance, but the skaters want the results right away. And I think Coomes/Buckland flipped out at that score at NHK.
IJS can be a bit restrictive on innovation in Ice Dance too.
 
So it's official that none of the podium from Canadian Nationals is going to 4CCs.

I'm curious what is going to happen between McNamara & Carpenter and the Parsons at 4CCs. And between Arnold & Williams and Sales & Wamsteeker. Split results at Nationals regarding both matchups.

It's been skated for a year & a half. They used it for the full season of 2015-16 and for the regular season in 2014-15. It wasn't ever fully developed in 2014-15 so it was nice to see them keep it & skate it to its full potential the following year. But they did that. It was fully developed.

I think using old programs should absolutely be banned by the rules. It is cheating in a way in my opinion.

Often I wonder if the pressure for quick results is more from the federation/media than from the skater.
 
I really think C/B are a special case though and should get a special pass because of their injuries but in general I don't like repeat of programs either especially in ID. For instance W/P is not really acceptable imo.
ISU could definitely put up a rule of maximum repeats like not more than one time.

It is not cheating. There is nothing about it that circumvents the rules or provides unfair advantage. Sometimes programs just don't work as skaters wish they would. And while it's not the case here, many skaters simply can't afford to have two new programs choreographed and costumed every season.

This is unfair to skaters who got injured one program into the first season and didn't get to showcase beautiful programs, or skaters who were injured for much of the second season and couldn't learn new programs. In Ice Dance though, aside from the above cases, keeping the same programs is just very poor strategy. It never works. When you've skated a program to its potential, it can only go downhill.

Definitely Fournier-Beaudry/Sorensen, great programs. Zagorsky/Guerreiro, Hurtado/Khaliavin (if they skate well, compete for some of the best Skating skills), Coomes/Buckland IF the judges figure out where to put them this time :D I don't really see all the love for Nazarova/Nikitin by the judges, but I'm not one, so either them or one of the french team ? They've had a good start of the season. The polish had a rougher one IIRC.

I'd say your top 5 @Dobre is a shoe-in, perhaps with quite the margin.

Co/Bu, FB/S, Z/G, H/K, are definitely going to be in the top 10. I'd say in that order but well, hard to tell. I haven't followed the german very well, how are they doing so far this season ? My bet for the 10th place (and it IS a bet) is Abachkina/Thauron. They need this in order to be in Pyeongchang and they are better than L/LG imo. They can rise to the pressure.
The poles are interesting but they usually make mistakes...
 
I think placements 2-4 will be interesting.

I wouldn't be surprised if B/S take silver and C/L bronze. But if C/L don't skate well and S/B do, I could also see C/L off the podium. The fact that Euros are in Russia (and the composition of the panel) could help.

5th could be between G/F and Co/Bu, but atm I see G/F ahead.

Rounding the top ten should be FB/S, Z/G,

and then a toss up for the last two spots between:
-Nazarova & Nikitin
-Hurtado & Khaliavin
-Lauriault & Le Gac
-Kaliszek & Spodyriev
 
I know Bobrova/Soloviev have their last season together provided Bobrova doesn't decide to keep on after a thinking period and of course provided Soloviev couldn't replace her in the meantime. However, have they said if they would attend Worlds or will Pyeongchang be their last competition ?

I don't think they've said. Three spots for Russia are on the line. Methinks they'll do Worlds.

That's Kaliszek Spodiriev in top 10 then.
I have to say euros dance was the worst judged event of the whole year for me in 2017.
Leaving the top 3 aside and the debacle of having P/C behind the Russians and Italians in the short , Tobias in 4th and the Ukrainians and Poles in the top 10 in front of vastly stronger couples. It all stank so badly, it was an awful panel.

I don't get the Ukr, the Poles or the Turks whatsoever, to me the Spanish and the German are infinitely cleaner skaters.

Can the combo of b/s and s/b really get three spots for Russia? At the sd in 2017 worlds they were 8th and 10th. Then 5th and 10th.

I think Stepanova/Bukin are going to be higher than 10th now, especially with no Virtue/Moir at Worlds (or so I assume) - I think 8th at the lowest even if all the other top teams are there. Bobrova/Soloviev could be 5th or even 4th (if one of the US teams and C/L make mistakes/loose some levels), but they could also be lower. So getting three spots is possible, but not a certainty.

And I wonder if b/s are below fifth at the Olympics if they want to go to a worlds where they can’t medal or help get three spots. Canadian team that replaces v/m could beat s/b.
