The Dance Hall 11: Movin' On Up 2023-2024

I'm going to spend the whole season in fear of them getting a music deduction (and kind of wish they'd got one here, where the stakes are low) if they don't change the music. It's like H/D's 'is it illegal?' lift all over again!
Today 7 judges and 1 referee thought it was Bonnie singing. No-one pushed the music violation button.

Hard to see how they could have thought that when there were two distinct voices singing, but the important point for G/F is that nobody pushed the button. This time.

They're not going to get the deduction because the ISU literally doesn't care this theme is half-baked at best they're not going to put any effort into actually giving music deductions too. They probably wish this season was over already.

cough cough on my own was right cough we should just listen to him from now on splutter cough spit

I've actually been enjoying the theme way more than I thought I would. I believe I'm enjoying it more than I enjoyed the actual '80s. A lot of the skaters are putting in effort and having fun with it.

Oh I think there's a lot of fun programs, I'm just saying they ISU itself put the bare minimum of thought into this and I doubt they can be bothered to actually care if there is any music deductions taken in the end.

I know these are just practice runs for G/P, but both programs look a little newer/rougher than I expected for their first competition. Looking forward to seeing them later today. And, actually love their FD costumes,

This is interesting because I don't think it's a terrible program by any means, but there's also not a lot that screams Paula Abdul/80s. I think the score is a little harsh ?‍♀️ . Also Caroline looks amazing, but black again? This is your chance to wear the ugliest color combos imaginable and so many teams are doing black??????

Except that H/D's lift was actually legal unless they made a mistake. Like by the rules, it was on the edge. This music choice isn't on the edge. It's not legal, but the ISU doesn't care.

I don't know that that's her final costume?

I suspect it is. The Paula Abdul Straight Up video is in black and white.

The costume in this live performance is also mostly black & white, but much cuter though:

I think this program by G&P looks pretty good for a first showing. Better than I worried about--and expressed--in the programs thread when I saw the music choice.

I do wish they had chosen Opposites Attract instead. You would think the duet would be perfect for ice dance. There's such a fun relationship right there in the song (even without the cat).

You are 100% correct about Opposites Attract. That song is a banger and they could have included some really iconic moves that stand out. Like I said I don't think this is a bad program, but I don't think anything stands out right now. Anyway hopefully they'll get some good feedback for their next outing.

Watching Pedersen/Chen at JGP Turkey, made me reflect, can anybody think of other dancers who moved up to senior and then went back to junior with a new partner subsequently? It happens sometimes with pairs (of course, split seasons are much more common in pairs), but I can't think of another dance example.

The realisation that you are officially old when you see these 80's RDs coming out and you are  at wtf they were thinking. At this point I am actually shocked to be looking for to L/L's Thriller RD because it looks like they at least got the right decade

Was it Brian Joubert who went an entire season with no music deduction and then got it at Worlds? I know this happened to someone but I can’t remember who….

According to Italian Fed, Paolino/Tuba's 4th place at JGP Istanbul is Italian best placement on Junior Grand Prix circuit since the 4th place of Sofia Sforza/Francesco Fioretti at JGP Mexico City 2013 (when they were 4th out of 7 couples entered).
Italy haven't won an ID medal at JGPs since Lorenza Alessandrini/Simone Vaturi's second place at JGP Dresden 2009.

I’m going to wait for a better video, but so far I agree. Paula Abdul is an actual dancer, and her videos reflected that. For Straight Up I’d expect more twizzles, more jazz dance, etc. But maybe I missing things from the camera angle.

Guignard/Fabbri's RD from Lombardia has appeared on YouTube, if anyone wants to see it/rewatch it: https://youtu.be/3OZyIpZon0I?si=i3K9INDS0x-eX22T

This was OK. But a lot of what I call "Ta Da" stiff arms throughout the choreography. The two songs do not work together IMO. And why two different versions of Holding Out for a Hero? There was a LOT of hand to hand choreography in the footwork sequence. And it kinda appeared frantic overall.

It also seems that there will be some cringey choreography this season. But I guess you can blame it on the 80's?

Really Liked GR/PAR's FD. Loved the constant weaving around each other's bodies. Lots of change of dance hold as well. Loved the Character step sequence. Needs some more speed and power. But it's pretty early.

It's a great contrast to their RD.

Michael looks like he is a bit out of shape right now. He seemed to be kinda scrambling around and confused in the RD and just not in shape for the FD. But I don't know if he was injured or ill in the off season.

They had way more variety of hold in the step/footwork sequence than G/F in the RD.

Not that it matters.

I’ve said this a number of times before, but I really don’t understand Italy’s dance pipeline over the last 10+ years. They have probably the fifth-best dance infrastructure of any fed, there’s no obvious reason they should be this thin on results from young teams over such a long period.

As for me, many dancers chose random songs from the 80s and choreographed the same random dances. And it's sad, because the idea seemed good.
Yes and I often like the first 30 seconds and then it doesn't work. So far, I think G/F have one of the better RDs, music rule issues notwithstanding. I need to watch Gre/Par fully. I've only seen their FD (which I loved) and a few seconds of the RD.
