The Adam Rippon Good News Thread

What amazed me most was Adam's steadiness in competition. A few years ago he was like a lot of US skaters. Beautiful to watch but likely to buckle under the lights. Somehow he turned that around. In the last couple seasons he's rarely missed. It's so noteworthy because few manage to do it. Often the opposite happens. As new comers appear seasoned skaters loose confidence.

If could deelop that into a "product" there's a career right there.

ETA: Speaking of galas, I just found another compilation of IG stories on YT that includes some footage of that one gala in DC the other night. (Although the real star moment is Adam's attempt at twerking... or at least I think that's what he's going for LOL)

Written by TIME Editor in Chief Edward Felsenthal (linked from: https://twitter.com/efelsenthal/status/986954840063528961 ) re. the TIME 100 list:
TIME’s annual list of the world’s most influential people is a designation of individuals whose time, in our estimation, is now. The TIME 100 isn’t a measure of power, though many on the list wield it. Nor is it a collection of milestones accumulated. As our staff considers candidates, we often find ourselves wowed by those with stunning lifetime achievements. But editorial director Dan Macsai, maestro of the TIME 100, brings us back to the key question: Was this their year?
Cher, in her tribute to groundbreaking Olympian Adam Rippon, regrets that when she was young, “I had no role models—everyone looked like Sandra Dee and Doris Day.” Seeing success in someone who looks like you, thinks like you, grew up like you can change the course of a life.

In that Time video, Adam mentioned that his first memory was of Paul Wylie winning his Olympic silver medal, and I thought about the parallels. Paul was a beautiful and talented skater, but it took him a long time to get to the point where he delivered at the Olympics.

Interview with Adam & Travis Wall: https://www.pride.com/sports/2018/4...is-wall-gives-adam-rippon-his-wings-stars-ice

Among other things, we get told how and why the SOI number changed from Shoshana Bean to Adele:
Wall recently collaborated with Broadway star Shoshana Bean on an emotional performance to her cover of "This Is Me," the breakout hit and queer anthem from the soundtrack of The Greatest Showman.

(...)

For Stars on Ice, Wall repurposed Bean's cover of "This Is Me" and designed one of Rippon's solo performances around it.

(...)

Things hit a snag, however, when Rippon showed up for his first round of Stars on Ice rehearsals.

"About four other people were already dancing to The Greatest Showman soundtrack," Wall said. "He was trying to get the song approved and they were like 'Uh, do you have anything else?'"

It was Rippon (a choreographer in his own right) who decided to switch out the music with Adele's "Remedy," a song that matches all the elements of Wall's routine while striking the same themes of love and healing.

(...)

Rippon added that he wasn't sure the song would work until he played it over a video of his routine. "It was sort of serendipity, where I was really in an Adele kick," he said. "It was a perfect fit, it worked so well. I texted Travis and told him, 'There was sort of an issue but it kind of worked itself out.' He was like, 'Whatever works. The show must go on!'"

^^^ Thanks for posting the link, @nimi! I was hoping the behind-the-scenes story of the music switch (from "This is Me" to "Remedy") would be published on the record - here's the relevant excerpt:

"It’s so funny how it laid out perfectly," Wall said. "Usually I’m not for one of these things. If I choreograph to a certain song, it has to be to that song."

Wow. Who knew all it took to make it onto TIME 100 was making it to the Olympics and calling yourself trashy a few times?

Somewhat unrelated, but Mama Rippon (who was Adam's +1 at the gala) posted this: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bh-GCY4l6PN/?taken-by=krippon

I especially appreciate the painstakingly drawn & colored hearts decorating the card, and the sentence "I like to wear sparkly shirts too."

Here's the sequence of events (in reverse) involving a cute little girl named Izzy who made a card for Adam and hoped to give it to him at the Hershey SOI show:

Adam taped an interview this past weekend with Gus Kenworthy that will air on ABC's Nightline late tonight (looks like some of their skating footage before the Detroit SOI show may be included). Here's a silly clip of them trying to do a dance lift together : https://www.instagram.com/p/BiVGbhdnHhD/?taken-by=nightline
Check local TV listings for the broadcast times in your area.

My cup runneth over with all of these Adam interviews and clips! I feel breathless, like I'll never catch up! :swoon:

Once again, he was awesome this week! Great Quickstep although imo he should've received straight 9s and Mirai straight 10s (just because of Adam's mistake on the turn) but otherwise I am pleased that both of my babes are tied going into next week!

Adam Rippon & Jenna Johnson Talk Fears Of Next Week's Triple Elimination | Access

Adam Rippon & Jenna Johnson Act Out Olympic Sports
"Dancing With The Stars" partners, Olympian Adam Rippon and pro Jenna Johnson, are hanging out in the Young Hollywood Studio where they challenge each other to a game of "Occupational Charades"! Adam has to act out a series of popular dances crazes, such as the Running Man and Gangnam Style, for Jenna to guess and then tries to figure out what Olympic sports Jenna is demonstrating, like the luge and speed skating!
Did you know "jerk" is a dance style? Neither did I. And neither did Adam. So, he was a bit  how to keep the miming family-friendly :saint:
