I'm glad to see Guy Pearce get a nomination.
I am shocked that Conclave didn’t get the Director nomination. It won’t he GG and I thought it was very well directed. This is bad news because now it has no chance of winning other big awards either.
Not sure why Anora is so popular. I may see it but Theyare showing it very late inthe evening here (9:30 pm start time). The nominations may bring it during daytime.

Sorry @AngieNikodinovLove (ANL) that your beloved "Showgirl" got blanked, although I suspected it would.
My biggest surprise was James Mangold for director of "A Complete Unknown," over Edward Berger for "Conclave." Mangold did get a DGA nod over Coralie Fargeat for "The Substance," but I had a strong sense she would make the final five.
"I'm Still Here" sneaking into the Best Picture slot is also a surprise, and none of the supporting "Conclave" actors made that deeply packed field.
Isabella Rossellini did.none of the supporting "Conclave" actors made that deeply packed field.
Isabella Rossellini did.
I was reading things online with people saying they're amazed Isabella was nominated with like 5 minutes of screentime, and others responding saying, things like 'yeah, because she's ACTUALLY a supporting actress in a supporting role'. Category fraud is so overwhelmingly rampant that when someone is nominated for a legitimately supporting role, people don't comprehend.I would also have Zoe Saldaña in lead actress, and Karla Sofia in supporting. And I would also bump up Ariana Grande to best actress with Cynthia. I do believe in category fraud, and this is the most examples in one season I’ve seen of category fraud..

I'm surprised Sebastian was nominated - not because he wasn't good (I haven't seen a single one of this year's films) but because he could have split the vote between his two films. Though I think Adrian has it for surviving the Holocaust a second time, part of me won't be surprised if Sebastian wins, if only for some voters seeing a vote for Sebastian as a vote against Trump.
And in a different Sebastian news - he is the first ever Romanian Best Actor nominee.
Yura Borosov is the first Russian nominated in any acting category since Mikhail Baryshnikov (Soviet) was nominated for supporting actor in 1977.
Isabella Rossellini is the first Italian nominated in any acting category since Roberto Benigni won best actor in 1997.
Also, another thing to note Anthony Hopkins, in the silence of the lambs had about the same amount of screen time as Isabella Rossellini in conclave, and he was nominated in best actor, not supporting actor. And then won.
Well technically he had about 25 minutes of screen time, but only 16 minutes with dialogue.
Similarly Rossellini is on screen in "Conclave" in several scenes with little to no dialog.
I'd say the difference is that Hopkins' character was vital counterpoint to the other central character and complete plot in a way that Rossellini's character wasn't.
Yeah, but that’s what I’m saying. 16 minutes of screen time is not lead. It’s a supporting role to Clarice.
I’ve seen Silence of the Lambs, and I thought Hopkins was in it more. I didn’t realize he wasn’t.But I'm saying despite the small amount of screen time, Lecter is central to the plot of "Silence..." in a way the nun in "Conclave" is not. That's what made it a leading role. And leaving the theater Hopkins made such an impact you would never realize he's only on screen 20-25% of the film.
Why is Anora winning so many awards? Is it really worth watching? It is running at a theater me. I don’t have a strong desire to see it, just a little curiosity.
I am not against explicit scenes and swearing, as long as it fits the story. I am not a fan of gratuitous sex or violence for the sake of it (to attract more viewers). Between sex and violence (both gratuitous) I would pick sex. However, caveat- if it’s a war movie, violence could be justifiable. My personal opinion about Anora is that it’s overall a very good movie. It’s not my favorite Sean Baker film (The Florida Project). Baker is my pick for Best Original Screenplay (but The Brutalist may win). Mikey Madison if my pick for Best Actress but I’m thinking that either Moore or Torres is winning. And I’m happy that Yura Burisov got in for Best Supporting Actor.
BUT - There is a A LOT of explicit scenes and swearing in Anora. If you aren’t a fan of that in movies, I would suggest skipping it.
