The 2024-25 Awards Season Thread

I was hoping Marianne Jean Baptiste would get in for Hard Truths but I don’t know who I’d take out of the Best Actress lineup for her. I’ve been a fan since Secrets and Lies.

Aside from Demi I’m not excited about any of the acting nominations this time around. This whole Emilia Perez craziness is baffling to me. I put that as one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen and I’m LGBT.

I would also have Zoe Saldaña in lead actress, and Karla Sofia in supporting. And I would also bump up Ariana Grande to best actress with Cynthia. I do believe in category fraud, and this is the most examples in one season I’ve seen of category fraud.

I would not include Monica in supporting either. I would not have her in the top five. I would have Danielle Deadwyler in before Monica. And Jamie Lee Curtis absolutely in. But these movies had distributors that are not powerhouses in the industry and man if it’s not universal or Sony or paramount, then you need to be out there peddaling pushing and peddaling because it doesn’t come from a distributor or production company that’s gonna throw millions behind it.

And the fact that the truly best written song for any movie was beautiful that way by Miley Cyrus, and it was completely omitted.

And if Daniel Craig cannot get in for lead actor here, he will never get in.

Sing sing, is ignored in supporting actor, and best picture which is crazy. And not much for Nosferatu, which I thought was also incredible.

I don’t believe in taking a movie like a completel unknown, the brutalist or Emilia Perez, and then nominating it 20 times for things. Surely there were other worthy movies and actors out there.

It’s a miracle, the Oscars head restraint in not including Selena Gomez and that Spanish accent for supporting actress. How did they restrain themselves from that. Lol.

Not sure, I will watch on March 2, since nothing here inspires me, except for Demi Moore.

I'm glad to see Guy Pearce get a nomination.

The more I’ve been thinking about The Brutalist since I saw it last week, the more I’m convinced that Pearce’s performance made the whole movie work.

I am shocked that Conclave didn’t get the Director nomination. It won’t he GG and I thought it was very well directed. This is bad news because now it has no chance of winning other big awards either.

Not sure why Anora is so popular. I may see it but Theyare showing it very late inthe evening here (9:30 pm start time). The nominations may bring it during daytime.

My guess (as of right now) is that Best Picture is a horse race between Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, and Emilia Pérez. Conclave is probably COOKED.

And Daniel Craig lost his spot to Sebastian Stan

I’m really happy for Stan and Strong. The Apprentice is actually a pretty good film. Everything I’ve heard about Queer is that it goes terrible about midway through.

I still can’t believe The Brutalist got Film Editing over Dune: Part 2.

And Emilia Pérez got Cinematography over Conclave.

GEEZ. 🙄

Sorry @AngieNikodinovLove (ANL) that your beloved "Showgirl" got blanked, although I suspected it would.

My biggest surprise was James Mangold for director of "A Complete Unknown," over Edward Berger for "Conclave." Mangold did get a DGA nod over Coralie Fargeat for "The Substance," but I had a strong sense she would make the final five.

"I'm Still Here" sneaking into the Best Picture slot is also a surprise, and none of the supporting "Conclave" actors made that deeply packed field.

I too was surprised that the ‘unknown’ Director was nominated but not the Conclave director, who has won many other awards (but not the GG).

Conclave cinematography was stunning! I can’t believe it didn’t get that nomination either.

Something against Conclave?

I was reading things online with people saying they're amazed Isabella was nominated with like 5 minutes of screentime, and others responding saying, things like 'yeah, because she's ACTUALLY a supporting actress in a supporting role'. Category fraud is so overwhelmingly rampant that when someone is nominated for a legitimately supporting role, people don't comprehend.

I'm surprised Sebastian was nominated - not because he wasn't good (I haven't seen a single one of this year's films) but because he could have split the vote between his two films. Though I think Adrian has it for surviving the Holocaust a second time, part of me won't be surprised if Sebastian wins, if only for some voters seeing a vote for Sebastian as a vote against Trump.
And in a different Sebastian news - he is the first ever Romanian Best Actor nominee.
Yura Borosov is the first Russian nominated in any acting category since Mikhail Baryshnikov (Soviet) was nominated for supporting actor in 1977.
Isabella Rossellini is the first Italian nominated in any acting category since Roberto Benigni won best actor in 1997.

Exactly. It doesn’t matter that Isabella probably only had about nine minutes of screen time. What she did with those nine minutes was spectacular. That’s what counts and yes, that’s a supporting role!! that other movie that I dare not mention its name almost all of them are lead actresses, except for the one that’s nominated in lead actress, Gascon, that’s definitely supporting.

But they think if you put two of them together in lead actress, they will cancel each other out like it happened in 93 with Thelma and Louise. But yes, both Geena and Susan were lead actresses. Neither one of them were supporting.

Can you believe that Sebastián was in I Tonya, he has done so many roles since then.

Also, Ariana wasn’t supporting in that role. She wasn’t supporting to Cynthia. They were both lead actresses. There’s two cases of category fraud with the same exact thing this time around.

Wicked and the Emilia movie.

Also, another thing to note Anthony Hopkins, in the silence of the lambs had about the same amount of screen time as Isabella Rossellini in conclave, and he was nominated in best actor, not supporting actor. And then won.

Well technically he had about 25 minutes of screen time, but only 16 minutes with dialogue.

Similarly Rossellini is on screen in "Conclave" in several scenes with little to no dialog.

I'd say the difference is that Hopkins' character was vital counterpoint to the other central character and complete plot in a way that Rossellini's character wasn't.

Yeah, but that’s what I’m saying. 16 minutes of screen time is not lead. It’s a supporting role to Clarice.

But I'm saying despite the small amount of screen time, Lecter is central to the plot of "Silence..." in a way the nun in "Conclave" is not. That's what made it a leading role. And leaving the theater Hopkins made such an impact you would never realize he's only on screen 20-25% of the film.

I’ve seen Silence of the Lambs, and I thought Hopkins was in it more. I didn’t realize he wasn’t.

This is kind of horrible of me to say, but it really sucks that a historic nomination is being used on such a (seemingly) terrible person.
Everything surrounding Karla makes me miss the days of the controversy surrounding Andrea Riseborough.

Why is Anora winning so many awards? Is it really worth watching? It is running at a theater me. I don’t have a strong desire to see it, just a little curiosity.

My personal opinion about Anora is that it’s overall a very good movie. It’s not my favorite Sean Baker film (The Florida Project). Baker is my pick for Best Original Screenplay (but The Brutalist may win). Mikey Madison if my pick for Best Actress but I’m thinking that either Moore or Torres is winning. And I’m happy that Yura Burisov got in for Best Supporting Actor.

BUT - There is a A LOT of explicit scenes and swearing in Anora. If you aren’t a fan of that in movies, I would suggest skipping it.

I am not against explicit scenes and swearing, as long as it fits the story. I am not a fan of gratuitous sex or violence for the sake of it (to attract more viewers). Between sex and violence (both gratuitous) I would pick sex. However, caveat- if it’s a war movie, violence could be justifiable.

I saw somewhere ‘Substance’ listed as Horror movie. Is that correct? I don’t like horror movies.

as time goes on, I dont like the substance as much as I did when I saw it. actually I dont like most of the movies I really loved around the holidays as much. or most movies made in my lifetime. this is why I always end up watching random harvest. but I think the substance would be better if they shared memories/mentation. . I still really like Flow. I sobbed.

I didn't care for the Substance, even as I'm not generally a horror fan. I felt that it could have been much better. The message was clear, but I think it could have been a better movie. The acting of the two leads was top notch though.
