Stars on Ice U.S. 2018

The lower level seemed just about full, and there were also people in the sky boxes and a few people here and there in a few places in the upper level. I tried to estimate the number of attendees and came up with a figure of about 5,000. Whatever the number, the crowd was quite enthusiastic. :encore:

ETA: And Brown's 4 Russian splits in a row are extremely effective. The Russian split is such a wow move that I always want to see another one. Four in a row was just a terrific punctuation to his program. (And that's something that Jason seems to intuitively understand - when the give the audience more of what it wants.)

I can't wait to see this on Thursday, and for another reason as well....

The link between my two loves, Jason and Toller, is now cemented. :saint:Toller routinely did four Russian splits in the "encore" part of the exhibitions that they did back in the day

Toller does four Russian splits and spins that would be amazing even today

And now Jason :respec:My skating life is complete:D

The show was AMAZING! Wow I'm so glad I went since I was previously on the fence.

Some nice surprises include the group numbers and unexpected pairings. I saw Maia Shibutani ice dancing with Zach Donohue in a 1-min interlude program that must have been choreographed by Marie-France? The music was familiar but can't quite figure out which M-F skater used it. Nathan Chen skating with Ashley Wagner in that "Shape of You" program was also unexpected and quite endearing. My favorite group number was probably the guys program to "Feel It Still".

My takeaway from ladies side is that Ashley is the star performer. Bradie & Karen are nowhere near ready to be a leading lady. If Ashley retires, her job skating in SOI should be safe for at least next 4 years. Really wish Ashley skated to "La La Land" for the entire season, since it's got so much potential as another signature program for her. *sigh* If only. On the other hand, the men's side is stacked with high-energy performers, especially Adam & Jason.

I'm glad lots of skaters used their Olympic programs. It was a bargain considering I got to see "Nemesis", "La La Land", Adam's SP, Shibs Coldplay and H&D's sexy free dance. Davis & White had the most artistic programs of the night. Overall a fantastic show, and I'd love to go again next year.

Greatly enjoyed the show in Portland, ME. But I will admit that this woman’s performance throughout the arena during the intermission was a highlight. :D...........Just kidding!

I will say that I wished there were a few more skaters in the cast - I do think that someone like Jeremy Abbott would have made a great contribution.

I think that Karen is greatly improving her presentation but Bradie is still weirdly packaged. I am surprised at how much more I’m liking Nathan’s presentation.

what?!! :eek::huh::lol:

Nathan Chen - I was actually most impressed not by his solo numbers but by his skating in the group men's number from the second half. I've seen Chen live in competition so I know he's has great command of the blade, but what struck me seeing him in this show was what incredible command he has over his entire body. His dance training is obvious in his use, connection and coordination of any and all body parts (vs. some skaters who can use their upper body or their lower body but not really the two together), all almost incidentally supported by masterful blade work. So I walked away from this show thinking of Nathan not so much as a skater but as a dancer who also happens to skate.
Thank you for addressing this.
Nathan is a much more "complete" skater than most believe, IMO.

The assistant choreographer of the Stars on Ice tour is Tyler Myles, he is a retired ice dancer and now a coach at Alberta. You can find him in this year's Japanese/US Stars on Ice media material from time to time.

Mirai Nagasu. I don't watch a lot of exhibition skating so maybe she's always like this in shows, but I was stunned by her extroversion. In competition, I find that she sometimes seems to freeze up, turn inward, and stiffen a little in between jumps. Here she coyly played with the audience and really performed. I hope we'll see more of this side of her on Dancing With the Stars.

I saw SOI in 2014 and Mirai performed there too -- I remember her Demons program. She was very shy, almost seemed scared -- she missed a jump and had to come back out (show was being filmed) to redo it and she was almost crying. The difference this year is amazing. She needs to turn No Good Deed into next years FS.

I was also in Providence. Got to test out my zoom lens for the first time since we were all the way in the back -couldn't afford anything better than the $28 seats xD- but the show was a lot of fun, and once I get my pictures edited and uploaded I can share them here. :)

I was the most excited to see D/W live for the first time, as I've been a fan of theirs for well over 10 years at this point. Their number with the scarf was sublime.

If anyone is looking for companionship in Allentown tomorrow night, there are three of us with a table reserved for four at Grain, which is walking distance to the arena. We're meeting at 5:30 and would be happy to have a fellow FSUer join us. I made the reservations under the name of Jason to make it simpler. I favor easy to spell names.

@Sylvia, funny you should ask ... I just finished typing up my thoughts, great minds and all that:D

First and foremost, I had a lovely pre-show dinner with @missing and her friend. SO nice to talk skating with “real” people, and real nice people at that.:40beers:

Since I am a Jason fan, I will start with that: both of Jason’s numbers slayed. That “Can’t Stop the Feeling” exhibition was a compilation of Jason’s greatest hits, with the worm, the handstand and the four Russian splits. The crowd loved it. And the falling to the ice with exhaustion at the end. So cute:p

Adam got by far the loudest cheers, but we were 70 miles from the Rippon homestead, I would expect no less. They mentioned more than once, "Pennsylvania, home state of Adam". Glad for the props. :respec:The crowd was a little smaller than I expected, about half of the “lower bowl” filled (cheap seats in the lower bowl appeared close to sold out, upper bowl was closed) but I think folks from Philadelphia who might have ordinarily have come to this show, are so accustomed to going to Hershey, that they reserved Hershey early. That and the fact it was Thursday.

Adam and Mirai are spending time, understandably, on DWTS. They both fell on jumps and Adam landed jumps hands down or two footed. The crowd could have cared less, as did I. He is the consummate showman and he was selling it. I also liked that we got, and I don’t know if because we were his Pennsylvania “home crowd”, some of the old, brilliant bashful smile Adam, instead of just poseur sassy Adam.

Nathan did quads. Plural. In a show. It is impressive. But I want to know why we can’t we have First Act Nathan (I don’t know the music, I’m not going to look it up right now) at every skate? :confused:Nathan who looks like the music speaks to him and he wants to say something on the ice, who looks like he actually enjoys skating? He was letting loose, and he threw in a quad. I want that Nathan. Even though it’s a show, old Nathan came back for Nemesis. Technically impressive, but……

Cutest of all, though, of the non-skating parts, was Jason coming out to shill for votes for Adam and Mirai on DWTS. Zach was with him on the ice, but he didn’t get two words in edgewise. I guess that was the substitute for the Instagram post action. They also threw signed shirts into the stands.

Mirai’s first number was great, she was pouty and sexy, and she jumped right up after the fall and got back into the program, I don’t even remember the second number.
I love Karen and I love her spirals, but she needs to sell more.

Folks, as far as I’m concerned, the lady of the hour was Bradie. Who was not even supposed to be here, according to the schedule. She is radiant, she is learning to project, and her jumps are tight, landed and one with the program. I also think “This is Me” is a great vehicle for her; I’m glad she is skating it.

Also, for those of you that have seen them, this will come as no surprise, but I’ve never seen them live. Meryl and Charlie, wowza! :eek:Their showmanship is up there with Jason’s and Adam’s. Charlie in particular is adorable. I don’t know enough about ice dancing to know if the lifts, tricks, skills, etc are great, and neither did ¾ of the audience. But they were smooth, polished, and not phoning it in. I was impressed.

I was looking forward to the Shibs and Coldplay, but it seemed a little sloppy to me, particularly the twizzles, which I adored in comps. But they performed “That’s Life” with verve and flair and crispness; I liked that a lot better.

Ashley was sassy, of course. Madi and Zach were technically impressive, but don’t speak to me. I enjoyed the group numbers, but I was getting my Jason on in any number he was in, so beats me what everyone else was doing. *he* was doing laybacks and illusion spins, sigh....

Not so great: I didn’t understand the point of the one minute ice dance numbers, with Adam Maia and Alex in one and I even forget who was in the second. And lose lose lose the random “What the Olympics mean to me” (ETA: from fans, not the skaters) vids. Oh please…..

Is it a comp? No, it’s a show.

Is it worth it? You bet.:cheer2:

Maybe because First Act Nathan was skating something he choreographed himself (at least according to his Wikipedia page)? I remember reading in an interview that he lets his choreographers choose his music. He might not be feeling Nemesis all that much...

For the upcoming season, I wish he skates to music that speaks to him.

So how was the show last night @missing, @el henry? :)

Did Jason and Zach do something before or after(?) the men's group number similar to this clip from the Orlando show?https://www.instagram.com/p/BhwX4UCFHmN/

I had a great time.

First of all, it was a real pleasure having dinner with el henry and bookseller. We may have briefly discussed other things (like which desserts to order) but 95% of our conversation focused on skating and skaters. We even found a rendezvous spot for intermission to continue the discussion (and offer on the spot reviews of the first act).

I enjoyed the group numbers and skaters skating with skaters they usually don't skate with.

What I found most interesting was that out of the ten skaters/teams, seven used at least part of competitive programs for their Stars On Ice programs. My guess is that ten years ago, or maybe even five, that wouldn't have happened. A certain amount of that is clearly because vocals are now allowed in competition, but I think it's also because an effort (not necessarily approved of by everyone here) has been made in recent years to make competitive programs choreographically and musically entertaining. I really liked it. I knew the programs were largely watered down but it intrigued me to see how the same basic material was reformulated. And to some extent it was like seeing old friends, or hearing a favorite hit at a concert.

It's a shame American pairs are in such disarray these days because a pairs team would have brought a good dynamic to the evening. And while I know the concentration was on skaters who were Olympians either in 2014 or 2018, I would have enjoyed seeing Ross Miner. I think he would have fit in very well.

Bookseller and I sat next to a couple (maybe married. maybe on a date). The woman was obviously a fan; she positively glowed with excitement for some of the skaters. The man didn't seem to know much about skating, but he got into the music. With an almost startling fervor, he stomped to the beat, and when his companion gently indicated he should stop that, he kept the beat with his hand on her thigh. There was something so ingenuous about this that it was endearing rather than annoying. But it does suggest that if you're thinking about going but haven't bought tickets yet, you could treat someone who isn't a skating fan and they'll probably have a fine time also.

....

I will always associate deconstructed s'mores with this SOI:lol:

And truly, a pairs team instead of three dance teams (or even in addition to, since we did not have a "special guest star") would have been a welcome addition. Any of our top four pairs teams would have done, they don't need to do comp level tricks. In fact, they could do a twist, some lifts and spins, and maybe one SBS double (and I'm not even sure that would be needed), and the crowd here would have gone wild.

Maybe next year:saint:

Just got home from Hershey show. Highlights for me were D/W, Nathan (Back From the Edge was awesome...well, it was better than awesome but I'm tired and that's the best superlative I can come up with ;)), Adam, Jason and Ashley. Adam got huge applause, maybe even more than D/W, but that's to be expected so close to his home. Zach and Jason did stay out on the ice after the boys' number and asked everyone to vote for Mirai and Adam on DWTS and then asked people to stand up and dance and threw 2 t-shirts into the crowd.

Hi everyone! Thanks for all the feed back I read from the people who had already gone to the show! I just bought my ticket this afternoon to attend the Anaheim, CA show on May 12. Is anyone from here going to that location as well? I am very excited to go. The youtube clips I've watched that people posted especially of the group numbers and Nathan's performances really captivated my interest. The last time I went to a SOI show was at L.A's Staples Center after Evan Lysacek won gold in the 2010 Olympics and in the middle of competing on Dancing with the Stars. I had the most epic seats that time. I was sitting in 5th row, and I was surrounded by other DWTS pro dancers and contestants (Buzz Aldren sat right behind me). I also saw coach Frank Carroll sitting near me. I was really on the fence about going to this show. But the one that really caught me the most was the Ed Shereen number. Nathan is an amazing skater in competition but yes seeing him perform in an ice dancing number is really intriguing. From what I saw on youtube, he did great but the one who filmed looked to be focusing on Meryl and Charlie (who I'm also big fans of but I wanted to see more of Nathan's dancing styles since it's a different side of him that we have not seen before).

Is anyone from here going to the Anaheim show as well?

I was planning on going to the Anaheim show but other stuff came up. I haven't been to a SOI show in about ten years! You'll have lots of fun.

Thank you for your SOI report, el henry!

I noticed that in the PennLive footage that Sylvia posted above, Bradie did a nice 2A3T3T (while Jason's Hamilton music was playing). Respect! :respec:

I was impressed with the steady flow, one number after another. The skaters are working hard. The choreography was interesting. I made up a story about Bradie Tennell, that she is using this tour to build her reliability: she did more triples in her programs than anyone. However, both she and Karen Chen need more commitment and power in their port de bras, and with their connection with the audience. Ms Chen had a rough night, popping and falling on lutzes. I wish the music hadn't been so loud; I watched with earplugs. I loved seeing some competitive programs: Mr. Chen's and Mr Rippon's SP are fabulous. Always love seeing Adam; I've known him since he was 11; we had the same coach for a few years. He was learning triples while I was learning halfs. Seeing his success thrills me. I am glad I went.
