No for me, I’m annoyed by the repetition. After about a minute, I’m ready for the searing guitar riffs, or the resounding BOOM of the percussion kicking in. Music with absolutely nothing going on is what stresses me out!

This is right in my wheelhouse. I used to find music from "Hearts of Space" much like this song. And on those nights when I could not sleep I would put the songs (if you can call them songs) on and I went to sleep quickly. It is more sound than melody but something about the constant backgound "noise" is soothing.

That's no song! No tune, no words. I would love to see the methodolgy of that study. But I do believe music can be balm for the soul, no question.

I've seen other songs that supposedly cause relaxation and they are all like this--wandering tones.

If you want an overview of the theories, here you go: https://enlightenedaudio.com/psychoacoustics-and-science-relaxation-music

But I believe that the purpose of the tones is not what one would traditionally want from music; it's not for listening pleasure, but rather to create a meditative state. If you are listening to the music for the purpose of listening to music, after all, your brain is very much engaged, while the point of tonal pieces like this one is to help one disengage from thought. I think that's why a lot of people find it agitating--they are anticipating changes in the music that never come because they are not listening to music.

I am not totally clear on this, as it's not my field, but I know that one reason people find 20th century classical music so irritating is because it rejects standard patterns and the human brain likes patterns. In modern popular music, the bass and/or drum is considered the most important element for engagement because it's the patterns that catch people's attention. We find patterns pleasing and like to anticipate the pattern before we hear it. It's annoying when it doesn't happen.

But anyway, I think you have to treat music like this as you would the "ooommmmmm" of meditation; it's not for listening, but for establishing a meditative state.

I use a meditation app called Headspace. The sleep modules are very much like what you posted here, and they work for me every time.

Meditative music for me is Younger Brother which I believe is classified as Trance, and Ludovico Einaudi, but I am not sure what genre his music is considered.
Other than that, all my music is for the experience of listening to the music. Or dancing, or singing or playing the air drums (I don't do air guitar - I like the crash bang boom!)

@JonDubber, I was about to post about it, too. I found out about brown noise around 6 months ago. I looked on YouTube and found this most relaxing. I sometimes listen to it before I go to sleep. It lasts one hour, and I like it better than some of the other brown noise on YouTube. I also listened to white, green and pink noise. But for me, I like the brown noise.

By the way, I see that this is your first post. You would have to purchase and download the brown, pink, green and white noise on the website you provided.

This is another reason I posted. The brown, pink, green and white noise can be found on YouTube and you don't have to purchase it.
