Shibutanis thread 3: Evolution

I guess we'll never see the Jeffrey Buttle exhibition that they worked on last summer...unless Buttle was working on programs they already had.

Maybe it will turn into one of their Olympic programs? I am really curious about it after seeing what beautiful work he and Mirai did.

My guess, based on how incredibly smart they are with their use of time and the people they work with, is they got a LOT done with Jeffrey Buttle in Toronto.

From a recent interview, they said he was a part of their 2016/17 program team. And, as implied in their TORONTO VLOG entitled "Really Secret Season Preparations" they did create an exhibition program. BUT I suspect that they strategically "banked" it for future use, the coming season. Assuming this is so, they effectively gain valuable time to focus on their Olympic competition programs.:cool:

Maybe they went with Jeff for an exhibition program but it was so great that they decided save it for this season:respec:?
DDNatalia´s theory is very convincing too.

wow, I already knew that they would start early the preparation for the next season but I never imagined that early for them was 24h after worlds :eek:.

Maybe like when they went to Peter for Fix You after the success and better acclaim their Coldplay exhibition received in the 2014-2015 season they decided to use Stephane as their exhibition this season was well-received. Or maybe it's a new exhibition.

I just realize that if your theory is true, it means that Stephane´s choreo is FD because I don´t think they trust their latin program to a swiss guy. And if Stephane is making their choreo, most likely it will be similar to their exhibition ¨Do you remember¨. I like the idea.

eta. okay, basically is the same that VIETgrlTerifa said , haha

Stéphane had an incredible Flamenco program so I wouldnt dismiss him as a Latin choreographer. They seem to like to use a few cooks. He could at least be a sous-chef on their SD. :) In theory. The Flamenco program, Poeta, was choreographed by Antonio Najarro, and Stéphane worked with him on this "Flamentango" piece too. I'm sure he learned a ton from their collaborations. Man, what a dancerly, silken skater he was (is)! It would be great if he could transmit those qualities to competitive skaters today. (I know various skaters he has worked with but I am not aware of any outstanding programs -- probably there are some that I dont know of.) Actually Najarro himself has done some notable ice dance programs, like I/K Carmen.) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nzWULsBnUxU

yes, it could be true, but Flamenco and in general spanish dances are very different from latin dance.

Is anyone else concerned about the sibling aspect of their Latin dance? It doesn't really bother me but I know people will be bringing it up all season.

I am not concerned about the sibling aspect but I am concerned in general about their SD. Last year they decided use hip hop very early, this year they already knew what FD to do for the olympic season, when I heard to Alex saying they have ¨some¨ ideas about the SD, I interpret it like they are having problems about it. I'm not sure how this works, but if they had known since last year what rhythms they could skate, they should have decided since then what rhythms to use to take some classes. Maybe they did it and it is not working :(.

I hadn't thought about it but rhumba is probably the least friendly dance for siblings. Even tango can be a mad tango rather than a romantic tango.

I think Maia and Alex just need to really skate to the rhythm and learn how to shake their body (especially the hips). The brother and sister thing may eek people out but now is not the time for them to worry about that. Just come up with a really fun SD and look like they're having the time of their lives skating to it. That in itself will be enough. We all know V/M will kill it as nobody can dance to the rhythm in this field like Tessa and Maia and Alex need to show that they can really dance. And get those damn levels in order like they did last season.

I interpret Alex saying they have ideas about the SD as meaning they don't want to over play their hand and announce their intended music too soon. We're barely in April, they'll invite more interest from fans and media if they wait a bit and keep people guessing.

What did you guys think of their 2011/12 SD? I didn't mind it and I thought they did the best they could with how restrictive the dance was at the time...but I can't help thinking how unlucky they are that Latin is the SD for the Olympics. Literally any other rhythm would be better for them than this.

I think it was a great vehicle for them for where they were at the time at the age 17/20. They reworked the SD from earlier in the season with Corky Ballas. Some said the new version from Nationals-on was clearly Latin ballroom inspired with the dance break in the middle while others argued it wasn't Latin at all. People will always have opinions.

I really liked the final product (nationals performance), but It is no secret that this program was really difficult for them. I just can imagine their faces when they found out what the rhythm was for the olympic season :(. Anyway, about 2011-12, I don´t think that D/W did a better job, and I hoped more from Tessa and Scott.

IMO their last SD (paso doble, coppelia and hip hop), the quality of those programs were very above the average.

I just found out that Stephane made the choreographies of Nelli ZHIGANSHINA / Alexander GAZSI 2014-2015 . I think he did a really good job.
The SD was more or less okay for Zhiganshina/Gazsi, but many people did not like the FD at all, especially the music cuts, the choreo/moves seemed to be too difficult for them, and both programs did not have enough transitions.

But that was Stephane's first experience choreographing for ice dancers, and transitions (steps, changes of holds etc.) and elements were/are not his job. Maia and Alex have Marina and the team for that, and in Z/G's case it was their coache's fault that the steps were so standard and boring and there were not enough transitions. Stephane's job is to offer separate moves/parts of choreo and, perhaps, give an overall direction and/or "flavour" to the program. I also don't believe that Shibs could ever make such questionable music choices (like what Z/G had).

The last song and the cocaine thing was too much, hahaha, but in general I liked it, and they were Z/G after all. Considering how many people complained about the ¨boring programs¨ this season, I think those programs would be a success in 2016-17.

And how I didn't knew that Shakira's song before?, it's great.

Actually it was never meant to be cocaine. They said in an interview that the idea was that they were snorting ice like it was their drug.

I am surprised that some readers think that the rhumba is a super sexy dance. It is on the dance floor, but not on the ice. A friend of mine who teaches Latin dancing thinks the ice dance version of rhumba is "bogus" (her word not mine). The Shibs should do a high-energy, fun Latin dance. I know they can do it. Let the rest do the typical "sultry, sexy.":blah:

I think those people have not watched the pattern or/and they don´t know that rhumba as ¨rhythm¨is not obligatory.

According to Sylvia, she heard that the Shibs were initially selected for WTT but declined the invite. They probably planned out their schedule from now to Pyeongchang, but I would have loved to see them compete at WTT for the first time ever.

Now that C/B announced that they've selected La La Land, I'm with everyone else who thinks the Shibs need to pick music that really gets the crowd going and is more overtly emotional.

Let's hope the Shibs take a lot of Latin dance classes this off-season and continue that during the season. A strong SD will do wonders for your standing going into a competition and the FD.

I hope that classes have started months ago :shuffle:
