Savchenko/Massot Fan Thread

I think you are right about this @Karpenko. The Russian pairs just haven't been the same since Sochi, especially V/T and S/K. Both have pretty obviously struggled with motivation at times since Sochi (not all the time, but definitely some of it). And Max's lackluster effort at Worlds this year was just weird. How can you be such a top competitor and skate like you don't even care??

I think they do still care, and I think this years worlds was a gigantic blow to them, but they just didn't have the gas in the tank to improve their craft and keep up with the competition. I really don't blame them either because IMO Sochi>PyeongChang, especially when you have all of your friends and loved ones to train/compete for who have supported you the entire time, and who will be in the audience... If the Olympics hadn't been in Sochi 2014, I don't think the Russian team would've been quite so mentally drained the next year. It is what it is

IMO the talent is there in all of Mozer's teams to beat the top 3 pairs, but a lot of the problem lies in the Mozer coaching situation in general. She's an excellent GOE coach, but her teams aren't learning anything new and it's not strictly just quad throws, etc. there's been little progression as far as content, so her GOE expertise hasn't really been applied to anything new with her teams. Leaves a dull effect. I expect S/K to be amazing from here out (and they are my #2), but they need upgraded content or the judges won't give them the PCS they deserve.

I agree! There's no gap! I also like that he complements her, not accompanies her. He belongs there. I've never heard anyone complain about him the way people discredit Gabriella Papadakis. Even if they did, they would be sadly mistaken. He's so technically proficient. He does difficult combinations, AND it was the goddess herself who messed up no the SBS sal, not him. He's like a modern Artur Dmitriev in the strength department. Aliona would never trust him if he werent reliable. You can just HEAR him grip the ice with his blades when he catches her from the stratosphere on that lift. It's remarkable and completely captivating.

Aliona is such a metaphor for so many awesome things. Bruno is as well. Again, I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOO GLAD they did not go the route of a well known coach and choreographer. There has not been true innovation in pairs since Moskvina.

I couldn't agree with you more. His SBS jumps seems to be top quality and really consistent based on the few televised competitions they've been in.

Couldn't have said it better myself. She definitely wouldn't put that much trust in someone if she didn't believe he had the skills. I really think this new LP will show everyone just how artistic his skating is.

And since you mentioned Papadakis not getting credit, I was watching their short dance from worlds with the Eurosport commentators and one of them said what we Papadakis supporters always think when we hear she's not that great. Here's the video link:

I've watched that version many times. Guillame is so exceptionally good at interpreting music, expressing the dance with proper emotion, on and on and most male dancers aren't. It's sticks out so much people tend to refer to Gabby like she's chopped liver and think " he's better" than she which isn't the case.

The German's have managed to step past the usual new partner obstacles. They look like long lost halves making a whole. I think of Kazakova and Dmitriev for instance. Together at their opening competition at Skate America, it was awful. Then there was the worlds where ha basically snatched her off of her feet LOL. Nobody laughed in 1998 though but the German's haven't went through pains that bad even before they could compete.

Coaches regardless of discipline should reference Bruno as an object lesson in teaching great skill to their students. He hopped into a pair with one of the best female pair skaters ever and had no learning curve. His jumps are rock solid. His partnering skills are unbelievable. His strength is only rivaled by Trankov, MAYBE. I could go on and on..

Exactly! People always say they find themselves watching him instead of her, but I couldn't disagree more. I have always watched her during their performances because she captures the feeling and fluidity of their dances so well.

To tie that back to Aljona and Bruno, I find myself going back and forth between the two. While Aljona is a champ, Bruno just has this quality to him that makes him so enjoyable to watch. Maybe it's the fact that he doesn't look like he would capture the emotion of the music well, and the fact that he does just really draws me in.

This pair will definitely be a force to be reckoned with this upcoming season. I see Bruno as being stronger than Trankov only because Volosozhar is taller than Aljona and so Bruno can really just lift Aljona up like a feather. I could also go on forever...

I'm also really hoping Sui/Han have more programs like their SP this year. So expressive and really great elements and musical phrasing. I just want pairs to be solid and enjoyable to watch for all pairs...

I'd guess it couldn't hurt the rotation speed of their throws, allowing her to open up and float down on the landing sooner. Maybe it's for a throw quad salchow, or maybe it's for fun because who wouldn't? :kickass:

it's official, they are trying to cross over to ice dance :cheer2: They already picked music P/C could have chosen, they look like they're going for seamless transition in and out of lifts and throws and now an ice dancer helping them. Every time I think they can't come up with sg more to make me even happier, they manage to exceed my expectations.

I wonder how those off-ice spinning exercises are supposed to help? Do these exercises on apparatus strengthen their ability to spin faster and/ or longer when they get on the ice? Or do they mostly help accustom skaters to being dizzy? ;)

It is to help centering yourself and getting yourself comfortable with rotation. In her case, it could help with rotation with throws. Aliona is a very open minded student.

Great stuff from S/M.
Among the elements to me the coolest was the twist entrance to a lift. Not sure where that fits into the rulebook but at this point who gives a poop.

I complained last year about their programs and I am loving the choices for this year. While some may find the music for the long slow/boring, I find that it has the chance to be spellbinding even without faster cuts. Their ability to build chemistry and really feel the music will make all the difference.

I don't know what it is about German pairs; they just seem to crush the off-center music choices. I think back to W/S 'Art of Noise' LP from 1995 I think it was, and Peggy and Mirko's programs from 1998 (both!) as slightly out there choices that I totally got. There were many others including much of what we saw from S/S.

These guys bring such awesome ingredients to pairs skating. Glad to have them around.

My German is extremely rusty or to be exact nearly completely gone. This will be a good test :D In the meantime if someone can give us a small summary, it'll be greatly appreciated.
