Savchenko/Massot Fan Thread

i'm both excited and nervous for them this coming season. i like how they skate together, but at the same time, they really need to get aliona land her throws on one foot consistently. instead, she does the opposite consistently. everything else are already top-3 level, if not gold

Yes. I agree about the throws. The errors may be nerve related. Tat/Max had wonderful throws at Europeans but at World's, Tatiana couldn't find her one foot landing to save her life it seemed. Aliona was clean in the short at Euro's but slight touch down in the free, barely though. I think that at the World Championships, inexperience was the culprit but still, i'm amazed at how magical this partnership is. Aliona may in my mind be the best overall Pairs Girl in the world. Bruno is to be respected because he stepped into big ass shoes, not Robin's but being partnered with such an accomplished woman. Many men have not been able to do this but he did, and he does it well.

They are representative of so many metaphors about life, from being ready in and out of season because you never know when you will get the call to second chances being better than the first. I'm hoping that this team wins Olympic Gold. They are fresh, easy on the eye, capable and ambitious. Plus, i'm always here to back a veteran returning.

There is something Lloyd Eisler about Bruno. He's a thicker guy with HIGH performance ability and he's so damn reliable ( doesn't remind me of Lloyd there). The showmanship he exhibits, even with the new repertoire is uncanny. I want to add that i'm sort of happy that they are not using the choreographers that everyone else is using and it seems to be working. I can see how they scaled down the movement because the ice is small. On standard ice going balls out, it's going to be nice. Aliona looks like she's having the time of her life.

Last thing, Aliona is the ONLY skater who makes Edea skates look nice.

Why wouldn't they be able to do the dance exit to the split twist in competition? Here is the definition of the twist lift from the ISU manual:

The Lady must be caught in the air at the waist by the Man prior to landing and be assisted to a smooth landing on the ice on a backward outside edge on one foot. In the twist lift, a split position by the Lady, prior to rotating, is not mandatory, but will be one of the features that might increase the Level of this element.

She's clearly being caught at the waist (exhibiting great control to be able to go into the dance lift/carry/exit) and is assisted to a smooth landing on a BO edge on one foot. Nothing in the rule precluding it. I'd argue that since difficult entries get levels, difficult exits should, but since there is no GOE guideline for the exit, as a judge i'd be tempted to give the extra point for novelty or whatever it's called under the rules.

Little updates from Aljona's instagram. They are working hard it seems on their LP. They prepare what seems to be a promising program with lots of little lovely and original poses.

I don't think we know their LP music, but I remember some rumors about Tango and they did take some ballroom coaching lesson too https://www.instagram.com/p/BGfZXACkDu7/?taken-by=aljonasavchenko
Looks like Tango to me.

If I had to guess its a tango with some comedy elements to it (like Sale&Pelltier, but better). I love the shapes.

I :D everytime I see an update from them this off-season. They really want this and are giving it their all. I never want them lower than 1st place from now on. :cheer:

More than likely Tat's and Max's problems had a lot to do with fitness and injury troubles which impacts timing and rhythm on pairs elements. If there exists an injury-related problem which impacts timing on a throw, it can easily affect a pairs lady's ability to land cleanly. Tat at least remained upright, albeit two-footed/ off-balance.

Aliona has had some two-footed landing problems, but it seems more due to adjusting to the height she gets with Bruno's throws. I'm sure she and he will work it out. :) Aliona and Bruno are looking very good, and I'm so happy for them that they were able to compete finally this past season and win bronze at Worlds. I'm sure they will be giving it all they've got in the coming seasons in the hunt for Olympic gold. But there are some deep teams and luck involved in outcomes. Who wins OGM will likely be a toss-up between Duhamel/Radford, Sui/Han, Stolbova/Klimov; Aliona/Bruno. May the best team win; i.e., whoever is able to master the moment at their highest level.

Errgghh, I'm hoping it's not tango, I'm kind of over tango right now. I hope it's something else.

Maybe it's really a polka or something random like the theme from "Toy Story 2"

(If it's not a tango then it's a very tango-looking polka or something, but you never know with her. It might in the end be the stage production of "Grease".. with a tango section). :p

I don't care what they skate to. I'm going to love it regardless. But, it's going to be hard to choose between Aljona and Susie Stolbova just like it was in Sochi between S/S and Volo/Trankov. But, I'm willing to wring my hands in anguish over who will be 1st and who will be 2nd. :D

I've also struggled a little bit with this dilemma, but in the end (for me) the tie breaker is Bruno vs Fedor. I would with Bruno in a friggen heartbeat and he can throw me wherever he wants. :smokin:

At the moment, I favor D/R, S/M, and a spell has been put on me by Ksenia, Yes! Ms K Stolbova has skills indeed, and Feodor is a capable, stalwart partner who holds his own in keeping up with her. Ksenia (is her nickname Susie? Why not Sen or K-Sen?) to me has opened up more and shown her vulnerability and a bit of her heart. If she and Feodor come up with equally compelling programs next season and can relax more with each other and continue in the vein of showing their hearts and desires as a team, I am willing to be further drawn in and to fall completely under K-Sen's naughty, magnetic spell. She has superlative talent.

Sui/Han are fearless, fiercely talented, and well-backed by fans and their fed. I respect them and admire their growth as a team, but they are not my favorite pairs team from China. Yu/Jin had the capacity and 'something special' quality to become my favorite Chinese team, but alas no chance now that they have been undermined and ripped asunder. No good karma nor goodwill will come from the break-up meddling/ re-pairings.

The thing is, I believe that Ksenia, Meagan, Tatiana V, and many pairs ladies have been inspired by Diva Aliona, so ultimately will Aliona and Bruno continue to up their game to the point where OGM magic can finally align for da Pairs Queen as it should have for S/S and S at least during one Olympics past?

The sooner that fans realize what her goals are the sooner they will understand. Aliona's dream is to land that throw Axel so no one should be surprised to see them training it. The Instsgram clips I saw made it look just about as good as her throws at Worlds lol. I agree though that they are apples to apples ahead of the Russians, especially if they add the difficult SBS triples they're capable of. The shitty throws are annoying as hell though

I think shitty throws are relevent. As Smirnov said, it's a lot easier to land the jumps on one foot if the throw is barely off the ice. Both S/M and V/T's throws are huge which makes it soooooo much more difficult to land on one foot. The judges see that as well. Personallly, I'd prefer the height and distance both teams get than the 6 inch throws of D/R. I think the point advantage goes to S/M.

I couldn't disagree more :P Firstly is not easier to land a jump on one foot if it is low - you need the room to fit the jump in, and let's be honest, no-one at the elite level (except Miyahara maybe) has low jumps. Secondly DuhRad have absolutely no problem with the height of their jumps - height wise they're on a par with everyone else, what they don't get is length. SavMas and VolTra (and StolKlim too) have a lot more length to their jumps which gives them greater flow on the way out (if they don't have other problems on the jumps like 2 footed landings), Smirnov should know - he and Kavaguti used the exact same idea for their quads as DuhRad - slow down the entrance go for great height to fit the rotation and land cleanly on one foot. It doesn't make for as spectacular a jump, but an extra rotation more than makes up for it and height is still impressive enough to get a bullet for positive GOE.

That was Smirnov's point. Yes, they do deliberately go for the lower, shorter jumps precisely because they are easier to land. The other Russians and S/M go for big, particularly Vol/Tran. Massot is able to get more height and distance than Robin was able to do because he's bigger. It's a lot harder to come down on one foot when you're that high in the air, so I cut both teams some slack when people seem to ignore the rest of the jump quality and whine about the two foot landings. Most women would land on their a$$. What Volo and Savchenko are able to do is pretty amazing. Stolbova is a close third.

Current GOE guidelines call for -2 deduction on 2-footed throw jump landings. So yeah, however much height S/M and V/T get on the throws, 2-footed landings are still an error and not an insignificant one. Theoretically their GOE on a 2-footed throw could still be as high as +1 (IF they started at +3). However in practice both V/T and S/M received negative GOE marks on their 2-footed throws at Worlds.

Theoretically, there is not a huge bonus for height/distance on throws. It is just one positive bullet point out of 8 bullet points that can contribute to positive GOE marks. In practice, I think that pairs judges do really value height/distance in throws, and teams that have both factors tend to get high marks (the Chinese pairs, for example). But landings are still important. And as to D/R's throws, they are meeting the requirements for +1s/+2s on their throws, which if you look at their scores from Worlds, is mostly what they received there.

This is not to say that I agree with all the GOE scoring guidelines (I don't), but this is what the guidelines currently state.

That was Smirnov's point. Yes, they do deliberately go for the lower, shorter jumps precisely because they are easier to land.

But neither DuhRad nor KavSmir go for lower jumps! They go for shorter (as in less length) jumps but they go for extra height - its especially noticeable in KavSmir's quads. Their triples are in the typical russian style of great height and length, but the quads go for a more static up/down jump that achieves greater height than their triples, but don't get anywhere near the same length.

Piffle. DuhRad's tiny jumps. :drama: I want to see daylight beneath her feet. I want to clutch my pearls while waiting for her to come back down to the ice. I want drama. I want Savchenko to :kickass: this season while Bruno holds her coat for her.
