Love Kate's hat, hate her dress. Maxima is maximum Max, love her (check out her earrings! they are apparently two of the diamonds that usually top one of her biggest tiaras). Sophie is disappointing, she usually stuns at Ascot but today's outfit is meh. Light blue was definitely the colour of the day, with HM the Queen, Kate, Zara, and Beatrice all matching and Eugenie wearing a slightly darker shade. Hard to find good photos without resorting to the Daily Mail (they do always have amazing photos, but such a nasty tone so much of the time).

Actually, genetics dictates that some genes are not expressed in favor of others. That's the way diversity works. Dominate genes are expressed. Recessive are not unless there are two recessive copies of the particular gene. Therefore, it is not unlikely that traits from a particular ancestor are lost in successive generations. Or the recessive gene is carried along. It depends on the gene and happenstance.

Sure. A basic grasp of genetics for me means a basic, common sense grasp of middle school biology where I learned about dominant and recessive genes. But the fact that some genes aren't always expressed due to dominant and recessive factors does not support that none of William's and Harry's children carry any Spencer genes. :p

Speaking of offspring, here's a recent documentary entitled: The Queen's Children :)

Perhaps the Queen had to have a tipple after posing with Trump
The choreographer Frederick Ashton was a great favorite of the late Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth's mother. He used to tell the story about how one day, there was a new or temporary manservant who brought them tea, and when she learned it was undoctored tea, reportedly said, "Will one of you old queens get this old Queen some real tea?"

Here are some pics from USA Today

Gotta agree with MLIS.....I think that blue dress of Kate's is a miss....and she doesn't make many. The Queen (well both of them) look gorgeous.

Camilla looks frumpy, and a little stooped. I wish the Queen's person could do Camilla. As to the stooped......she will be a lot happier in about 10 years if she works on standing straighter now.

That link gave me a list of articles but no Royal Ascot pics. I'm therefore going to link to the Daily Mail - whose royal coverage is a lot less biased that the Daily Express and who do fabulous pics:

Lots of Royals having fun at Royal Ascot

The only dress I didn't like was Eugenie's - mainly because I though it needed sleeves of some sort. Sophie's wasn't her best effort - but would have looked better with a plainer hat rather than one that matched her dress. Kate was stunning - loved her entire ensemble along with Queen Maxima whose hat just stole the show IMO. The Queen was as always elegant and looked awesome. And as I said everyone looked as if they were having the time of their lives. I also though Camilla looked lovely - not stooping at all!!

I also liked Anne's dress. Eugenie's was alright but her hat didn't go with it at all. Are bows at the throat coming back into style? Nooooooo! :scream:

Except they ID'd Princess Beatrice as Eugenie. But lots of great pics.

Agree with all of this. I really liked Eugenie's dress; not sure what her thought process with the hat was.

I liked Kate's, but can do without the bow. Zara's floral seems like a big, busy print on first glance, but it suits her. Bea's dress is the only real miss for me. I think she struggles to know what flatters her shape.

It must be remembered that the Royal Enclosure at Ascot has a very specific dress code. The ladies are more conservative than they might normally be due to that. Hem lines must be at the knee or lower, nothing with straps less than one inch wide, no off the shoulder styles, and there are even rules for the size of the base of your hat (no fascinators!). I'm sure some like to err on the side of more conservative than the requirements just to be certain, hence the longer hemlines. Plus longer hemlines are more popular lately. There's a row of mid calf to ankle length dresses on the bottom of the page for me right now, in fact.

Good photos and write up at What Kate Wore.

There are some yellow pleats in the skirt of the dress that match the colour of the hat. I like the yellow and blue - just would like some sleeves or a jacket of some sort.

I missed the yellow pleats. She did have a yellow umbrella though as well as nips front & center.

Why isn't Meghan there? I know she is on Maternity leave, but she is only a stone's throw from Ascot. Way to fabulous an event to miss.

Not everyone attends every year, either. Kate has only been a few times in the 8 years she and William have been married and did not attend any year that she had just had a baby in April or May (Louis & Charlotte) or when she was pregnant with George.

BBC News is reporting the Cambridge motorcade was in an accident on the way to Ascot and an elderly woman was seriously injured. I hope she makes a full recovery.

The Ascot event is a royal tradition I kind of don't get. None of them ever really look like they;re enjoying themselves and it honestly seems exactly like that scene in My Fair Lady where ladies in huge hats are making "small talk" with each other. Only Zara and Anne are into horse racing and horses. The others aren't at all. William in particular looked really bored.

With that being said I liked Kate's blue dress with the exception of the big pussy bow. It just was one more layer of fuss in a dress that already had a lot going on.

It is a scene from Ascot Opening Day in My Fair Lady. There is even a song that describes it perfectly. The song is Ascot Gavote. It is where Eliza makes her entrance as an English Lady. If you watch the vid of the song you will see how it captures what we saw in pictures.

Funny you saw bored people...i only noticed people having fun.

I lived in Ascot for a year in a house bordering the Queen's forest. It is a straight shot through the forest to the race track. I don't know if they traveled by road through the streets or the carriage paths through the forest.

Just looked up...through the woods!

The Queen is very much into horse racing and seems to enjoy Ascot a lot, as did the Queen Mother before her. Not sure about the rest of the family. Sophie usually looks like she is having a good time, although she as such perfect manners it is possible we wouldn’t be able to tell if she hated it!

What crap are you spouting? The Queen owns several racehorses. Also she’s the QUEEN, if she didn’t want to rock up at Ascot every day then she wouldn’t and send other royals instead.

Wah, I should have been at Royal Ascot today, but just got too much on. Looking at the weather forecast though :slinkaway . Although I watched for hours yesterday and it still looked fabulous even in the rain. However, being there in 30c sunshine last year was 😍😍😍.

To be fair the yellow pleats only became visible in full length pics and then only when the skirt of the dress was moving. I think adding a bolero jacket in the same colour as the dress edged with yellow would have linked up the whole outfit - hat and all - much better!!
