Royalty Thread #7: Do They Get Frequent Flier Miles?

I think Meghan is stunning but I've liked hardly any of her outfits since the wedding. It's impossible to look at that gray one without focusing on her bust. It was really "out there". Almost all of her outfits have been too loose or too tight. When I see people defend the gray outfit or the Spencer wedding one it reminds me of the story of the Emperor's new clothes. I think I can like Meghan without loving all her choices.

Today I am wearing a cornflower blue peasant style blouse - it is crinkly material, so extra wrinkles don't matter so much, and it has a crisscross cut out detail on the shoulder so my black bra straps show through. :shuffle: Then I have faded black jeans from Walmart, and a black short sleeve lacy summer sweater from the thrift store. My jewelry is a long double link silver chain wrapped around twice, also from a thrift store, and a pewter cuff bracelet with a spiral design I got in Ireland. There are black BOBS on my feet, and my hair is in a twist with a clip at the back and WISPY LOOSE STRANDS OF HAIR :drama: around my face. My purse is a black cross body bag from ROOTS, and my tote bag is a pretty floral print with shades of aqua, pink and baby blue. My lipstick today is PINK QUARTZ. :smokin:

I look awesome and so glad nobody notices. :p

Your post made my day. I bet you look fabulous!

I can't match the detail of your ensemble. I am in a navy and white v neck t-shirt (navy is a summer color) white shorts with yellow flip flops.
I am having a bad hair day my natural curls are frizz from the humidity so I put it up in a pony tail to complete my outfit.

Cut offs. Red t-shirt. Hair wrapped up in an elastic. But I'm not leaving my house today. Nor, like everyone else here, am I representing my country and government on an international stage with cameras present.

There is a slight difference between our daily lives and jobs and that of a working member of any royal family.

Take me shopping!

She isn't either, technically. She's still American. She is representing her husband's family, who represents their country and government.

And, of course, the British Royal Family does not represent the British Government. To the contrary, Her Majesty's Government represents her. :glamor: :COP:

I love you @quartz. :saint::encore: Preach!

In the absence of seeing what Meghan is currently wearing ;) today, I'm wearing worn and slightly faded dark navy jeans (but without Meghan-style raggedy holes :p), with a short-sleeved navy T-shirt top, and look ma, no bra, no belt, no make-up, and no jewelry, unless by chance I happen to go out today. Then I will don my gold hoop earrings and some lip gloss, sunglasses, and maybe my large green and brown marbly, quartz-like bracelet. :) Sad to say, my hair is not at it's best but whatever. I usually wrap it in a black scarf and throw on my trusty light wheat-colored straw hat with black ribbon tied in a bow around the base (somewhat reminiscent of Meghan's Panama hat, but much more tattered I must admit. :shuffle:) Anyways, I'm actually thinking of getting a super-short haircut for the summer. :D Vanessa James-style goals! :cheer2:

And now for a nice segue into what Melania is wearing today. This Youtube channel thinks Melania is copying Meghan. If so, it's not quite as bad as plagiarizing Michelle Obama. :drama: Ha ha, Melania used to be a model with and without her clothes, so she does have a sense of style. She usually looks good in her fashion choices. Her choice of husband is another thing entirely, but yeah we make our choices and our beds, and then we have to lie or lay in them. Or maybe belie them. :COP: Meanwhile, it looks like Trump is attempting to copy Harry's love and protectiveness toward his spouse. Not very believably! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amja_4JTSL0

I'm not sure why the vid starts out with the Trumps and quickly switches to Megs & Haz greeting a crowd of fans in Ireland. I doubt we'll be seeing the Trumps greeting crowds of many well-wishers in Britain. But it looks like Trump is more than ready for his British pomp & circumstance photo opportunities. :blah:

Not in honor of Ireland, but because it was his high school's color, I am wearing my son's green high school gym shorts and a green tee shirt promoting a high school play and black flip flops that are my very own, but are 2 sizes too large (also not in honor of Meghan's shoe size issues, but because they were all I could find).

I am repeatedly mopping up the kitchen floor because we seem to have developed a water leak of unknown origin. I may open a bottle of wine very soon.

Such a kill-joy. :revenge: Why not simply laugh at the irony and the sarcasm? Moreover, there's no need to get beside ourselves re Meghan's royal sartorial choices. It's just fun watching and sharing likes and dislikes, without taking everything too seriously or personally. :)

Duchess Meghan surely ain't the least bit worried about any fan or persistent critic over-focusing on her attire. That's just sartorial trivia mostly, and it can be fun if you enjoy fashion-watching. Meghan don't strike me as being bothered by minor sartorial hiccoughs either. She isn't about to be able to please everybody every time she steps out in the public sphere. She will likely continue rocking it conservatively as she pleases, daringly as she pleases, stunningly as she pleases with whatever perceived or actual missteps, which she may take note of, but surely not panic over.

Anyone who has ever tried on gorgeously made attire in luxurious fabrics knows what that feels like. It feels beautiful and uplifting, even more-so I'm sure for anyone who has worn custom-made clothes or who can afford to buy or make expensive feeling and looking clothes on a regular basis. :swoon: Meghan has had the advantage of feeling this way sartorially for quite some time, well before meeting Prince Harry. But now, it's been taken to a whole 'nother level. No matter the odd slightly puckered seams or fabric choice/ undergarment mishaps, there are clothes being made expressly for Meghan, to her specifications and desires as the Duchess of Sussex, Countess of Dumbarton, and Lady Kilkeel (which she would have been appropriately addressed during her Ireland tour). :D

It's simply fun taking a ride from afar (very afar) with Meghan. But I'm also aware of and objective about my twinges of envy and wondering what it must really be like, and knowing I'm personally not as equipped to handle what Meghan is doing quite well. I'm mindful of the interview I recently posted with Autumn & Peter Phillips, where Autumn responds to the query about whether she ever looks around at royal family gatherings and pinches herself. She agreed that she did in the beginning, but that she's been welcomed and embraced by what is actually just a large family who love each other (even though they are also a very historic, famous and privileged family).

I hope that whole post wasn't addressed to me aftershocks. I don't recall criticizing anything Meghan has worn or done.

Marrying Harry was not a commitment to please the fashion police. Yes, Meghan and Kate are very fashionable, but there is no requirement for it. She seems like a lovely person, and willing to play the role of royal well. When she gets her citizenship, she will represent "her country" well I'm sure.

Her name is Autumn.

^^ Right thanks for the correction. I got it right in the original post where I linked the charming interview with Autumn and Peter, but I didn't get her name right off the top of my head. :p Autumn Kelly Phillips!

I just read that Duchess Meghan and Duchess Kate will be present in the royal box on Saturday to watch Serena Williams play in the final against Angelique Kerber. That's going to be special! :cheer2:

Oh, I just see your post @mag. You beat me to the news! It should be fun to watch -- both the match and the royal box! :watch:

Oh no @Skittl1321. I just thought your post to which I responded (in my first two sentences) seemed a bit over-serious and glum coming after @quartz' delightful post. :) The rest of my remarks were in general. And I include myself in my reflective critiques. :D Meghan is representing quite well herself, her husband and his family (which is also now her family), and every country in which she's resided: U.S., Canada, and now Great Britain.

Actually I don't think the Duchess of Sussex would have been referred to as Lady Kilkeel while on an overseas trip to the country of Ireland as that title is for usage in Northern Ireland - which as you know is part of the United Kingdom. I suspect the official title on any overseas trip would use the primary title - that of Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Though as we all know they are still referenced by the monikers Prince Harry and Meghan by the press coverage and will be for a long while just like the Duchess of Cambridge is still - after 7 years of marriage - referred to as Kate Middleton. I do admit I have a  moment when I see both Duchesses referenced as Duchess Kate and Duchess Meghan as that is not how to address them at all - though I think that is a moniker applied by press in the USA more than anywhere else. :)

You're right. That's not how they should be addressed. The correct usage is "Your Grace" for Duchesses.

Kate's official title is Catherine, HRH the Duchess of Cambridge. So she would be addressed with HRH. William's dukedom is a Royal Peerage. A duchess not married into the family to a prince would correctly be "your grace" as they would have only a peerage not a royal peerage.

It's all quite complex.

Meghan and Kate are not Duchess first name, though. Both are First name, HRH Duchess of... They are also Princess Henry (Harry) and Princess William respectively. Think of it as similar to the fading usage of Mrs. John Smith. They are not princesses in their own right because they are not blood princesses. Diana was not either and her proper title was Diana, Princess of Wales or Princess Charles. That is also Camilla's title, in spite of it not being used.

Nobody is referred to as Duchess First Name. It's always Duchess of Something. The daughter of a Duke (or a Marquess, or an Earl) is Lady First Name, like Diana was before her marriage, or Lady Sarah Chatto.

(I'm sure you know this, but I'm posting because "Duchess Kate" and the like is really grating)

Yes, and I meant to point that out. Neither is anyone Duke first name.

I have to say that "Duchess Kate" or "Duchess Meghan" is less grating than the use of their maiden names as if they aren't actually married at all-- headlines that begin "Prince William & Kate Middleton" or "Prince Harry & Meghan Markle". It's particularly ridiculous for Kate as it has been over seven years. I'll give three months or so for the adjustment for Meghan. But that three months is nearly up.

I think the press intentionally continues to refer to Kate and Meghan in that way because they're more "relatable" that way. Many readers are likely to identify more with the commoner or the American who married into the British royal family than with their current, more remote identities as "Duchess of" this or that. I'm not saying any of this is correct usage; I'm just explaining why I think they do use it.

It's also about SEO (search engine optimization). People want to know about them, so they search for articles and pictures, so online media produces article after breathless article, and because they know the most common search terms, they pepper them into the articles and tag their articles and photos in the hopes that they'll appear higher up on Google and y'all will click on them and then they can tell their advertisers how many clicks they had. The competition for your clicks is fierce :revenge:

I find it less annoying when American media does the Duchess Kate thing than UK media; because none of the rules of the monarchy apply in the US. Any title they are given here is merely courtesy.

I think the useage of their last names is because they no longer have a last name. First names are relatable but a headline that says "Meghan stuns at charity event"- Meghan who? Of course, she might still be Meghan Markle. Does she have a UK passport yet? Could she change it to "Meghan, Duchess of Sussex" if she is on a US one?

They're both annoying, each in its own way.

With Meghan, I find it more understandable because she had a successful, high-profile career under hr own name. But if its possible for people to grasp that the very accomplished Amal Alamuddin became (by her own choice) Amal Clooney after her marriage, so too can Meghan and Kate be referred to by the correct titles.

It would be nice to think that everyone is just doing as Amal wishes, but I think the likelier reality is that Clooney is a lot easier to pronounce, spell and remember than Alamuddin. Plus, as accomplished as she is, he's the one with the household name.
