PICK THREE: Underappreciated Movies

I'm confused. Do you mean you think Debbie Reynolds should have won? You said not overlooking. If so I agree. She should have won best supporting for How the West Was Won too.
OOPS! Yes I meant for overlooking.

PICK THREE! Tell us what you liked/loved about your favorite overlooked films. My picks:

1. Copland: Sylvester Stallone---normally I do NOT like him in films. But in this one he is a shy, sensitive sheriff fighting off crooked NYC cops who live in his town. It was a fantastic story with lots of star power with an incredible cast list from the leads to the smallest parts.

2. Enchanted April: Four 1920's era British women, strangers to one another, decide to pool their money and rent a small villa in Italy together one April. The setting is to die for and the story is heart-warming because it focuses on friendship between women even as it tackles romance.

3. Pleasantville: What happens when two teenagers (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) get stuck in a 1950's sitcom? This film was so much better than I anticipated because it was both funny and serious. What happens when part of the town welcomes newness and discovery while others resist change?

I adore "Enchanted April" !!!!! I am so glad you mentioned it!

Local Hero (1983) - for those who love Scotland :)

A Private Function (1985)

The Tall Guy (1989)

"Local Hero" is my favorite film of all time. I love the cast, scenery, humor and even the gentle suggestion of fantasy. And I still play that gorgeous soundtrack. Most of all I love that it is not trite. You think you know what is going to happen: Big American Oil comes to Scotland and in the old Hollywood formula, the representative from Big Oil meets charming lass and he sees the error of his ways and fights for the people of the town. Right? "Local Hero" destroys that old archetype in funny, unexpected ways and finds another way to a happy ending. So, so good.

"Waking Ned Devine": With Ian Bannen, David Kelly, Fionnula Flanagan, Susan Lynch. When a lottery winner dies of shock, his fellow townsfolk attempt to collect the money. Ian Bannen and Fionnula Flanagan are treasures.

"Make Way for Tomorrow": an old 1930's film about an old couple who are in financial difficulties and are forced to live with their horribly ungrateful (and horrible) children. The kids split them up and they have to live apart from each other. There are some truly heartbreaking scenes that mirror what happens to many seniors today.

My # 1 pick is also "Enchanted April". The breathtaking scene when they open the window on their first morning in Italy is forever etched in my brain.

Rudy was a good movie too

I have been a Notre Dame fan since 1963. I cannot even count the number of football games I attended in that stadium.

I loved this movie which was filmed on the campus. Rah! Rah! Rah!

God Bless Touchdown Jesus. :)

I don't know about this particular movie being underrated, but it will always be my favorite of all times. It was also based on a play by Robert Harling. He wrote Steel Magnolias as a way of coping with the death of his sister Susan. She died from complications with diabetes. Of course, in the movie, Susan became Shelby.

The movie was filmed in Nachitoches, La. with a cast of great actors including Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Tom Skerritt, Robert Harling as the minister and Julia Roberts as Shelby.

Here are some facts about Steel Magnolias (the play and the movie) that are pretty interesting including who else was considered in the cast of the movie.

23 Facts About Steel Magnolias

I fell in love with Shirley MacLaine's character, Ouiser Boudreaux. There couldn't have been anyone else to play Ouiser.

One of my most favorite scenes in that movie is the cemetery scene,

Steel Magnolias; cemetery scene - "Slap her"

In all, this unforgettable movie made me laugh and cry. ?

What a great article, and one point made me instantly cry (not surprising, actually.) Thank you for sharing this.

Freeway--an extremely dark and violent comedy with Reese Witherspoon before she got famous

Smile--a dark comedy centering on beauty pageants that Drop Dead Gorgeous (which I also like) generously borrowed from

Not coming up with a third one. I want to say Spring Breakers but I'm not sure that movie really should have been appreciated by the majority of people who saw it.

I have a thing for classic British films, so I'm going with three of those: The Man in the White Suit, Hobson's Choice, and So Long at the Fair. The first two are better known (HC got a Criterion release), but I think all of them are relatively obscure these days, and deserve not to be.

A memorable movie. I just loved it.

I loved Lady in Gold. I became fascinated with paintings by Klimt after seeing this movie. I even have a silk scarf with Klimt paintings on it (though not LIG).

Did they ever find out what happened to the necklace? Do they really think Goering's wife ended up with it?
