Olympic teams cheer thread

As expected, Russia moves ahead of U.S. into second and the U.S. holds their own to stay in third place over Japan in fourth. I think the judges were rather lenient toward Osmond and Satoko, especially with Bradie showing them up technically. Even Carolina was way awkward on those landings. Although they downgraded her jumps when she probably should have just gotten nicked on GOE and less points on PCS because it affects the flow of the performance, the judges just showered Carolina with the PCS marks and gave her questionable underrotations. Satoko isn't a good enough jumper to necessarily land in front of Bradie by one percentage point. Although, yes on PCS, Satoko is exquisite, and Bradie has more room there to develop. But IMHO so do Evgenia and Zagitova have room to develop on PCS, but the Russian ladies are always being lauded like they're so great on PCS. Obviously the scoring is not fair across the board. I hope this kind of judging doesn't go down in the singles events simply because they're trying to keep Bradie down on PCS. When Gracie made tech mistakes like that she always was dropped, while Osmond who should by rights be rivalling and often beating Med, gets coddled for her miscues.

Med is a competent technician and a budding artist. She's not perfection and she's not as stunning as Johnny thinks. :drama: It's a lot of political scoring as usual.

... many attempts to cleanup Nathan's SP performance in the team event

Where are those attempts, btw? :drama: Of course, it's on Nathan how he handled the distractions and the burden of expectations, but that responsibility which Nathan himself owns up to, most definitely doesn't absolve NBC and media's OTT intrusiveness and heavy 'camera-in-the-face' pressure they placed on a young athlete at his first Olympics.

In any case, there's nothing that's needed 'to clean up' verbally, magically or anecdotally about what happened to Nathan in the team event sp. It is what it is. He's a champion athlete and he knows what happened in those moments and what he needs to do to make adjustments. There's no rewinding a performance in figure skating, just as there's no possibility for rewinding events in any of our lives. You got to move forward from where you're at, and try to stay in each moment.

... I'm sure this info can be found in a million different places, but here is the lineup for today's Team Event - Day 3 competition, in case you should happen to trip, stumble or fall into the Olympic teams cheer thread: https://twitter.com/SkatingLesson/

Nice retweet about Bezic's advice for the team event athletes. But TSL's ongoing vituperation and apparent bitterness toward Johnny is OTT!

Congratulations to the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics Team Event Winners:
Team Canada - Gold
Team R-OAR - Silver
Team U.S.A. - Bronze

:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

What a show! What a show! :40beers:

Russia should not be allowed to compete as a team. They can do individuals but the team should be disqualified.

Gold - Canada
Silver - USA
Bronze - Italy

^^ Yep, I would like your post 100 times if I could! :respec: Because although the doping scandal and current situation is not the athletes' fault, there's way too much leniency been shown to Russian officials and politicians. And unfortunately, too much dissembling and defiance and acting like they're victims of the rest of the world, on the part of many Russians.

I'm really over Johnny's continued OTT fangirling of the Russian ladies. It's okay to love them like we know he does, but I mean please with the incessant hype over them every time he gets a word in edgewise in the booth. :drama:

I agree with these TSL tweets:

I find that Tara, Johnny and Terry fail to bring the emotion, drama and gravitas that the moment requires. It feels like they’re talking over a video game. This is the Olympic final.

The Skating Lesson‏ @SkatingLesson 7h7 hours ago
Instead of building up the competition, NBC talks over it. Please stfu. Please.

Watching the Olympic Ice broadcasts online make me miss when Mary Carillo hosted the Olympic Ice show back in 2006 as I recall -- it was so much irreverent fun, and entertaining, along with Push Dick's Button episodes. :encore: Can we find some in-between with the TSL over-snark and the vanilla of the Olympic Ice nicey-nicey summaries? :drama: I mean I love seeing Ben, Kristi and Charlie conversing together, but it's very scripted. I believe if Charlie wasn't constrained by the format and having to be nice and neutral, he could really fly with insightful, constructive and entertaining analysis. But too many people in figure skating are so very afraid to rock the boat with some honesty and sticking some pins in the so-obvious politics!!! Although I like the occasional insights and pinpoint honesty of TSL, they too often go too far and too harsh and too OTT for their faves and too slamming of their non-faves.

Still more TSL tweets I agree with:

There is no way I would have Kolyada ahead of Adam. There was no performance there. BS. #Pyeonchang2018

The Skating Lesson‏ @SkatingLesson 7h7 hours ago
It is pretty ironic that Adam’s skating skills cost him here. I have only been yelling about those crossovers since 2009. Still, there is no way Russian Elvis was superior.

It is very fitting that Patrick will become an Olympic Champion in the same way he won many of his titles.

Whoa, drop the mic on the above. :kickass: OTOH, I'm happy for Patrick, and I'm very happy for the entire Canadian team winning gold here. There will be lots of changes in figure skating with the expected retirements coming after Olympics and Worlds this year. But yeah, it was very lenient judging on a lot of sloppy skates in the team event, while tech panel was scrutinizing the Shibs to death, in an obvious effort to keep B/S overly close to a far superior team.

I love that Alina Zagitova was named after Putin’s mistress.

The Skating Lesson‏ @SkatingLesson 6h6 hours ago
I am very happy for the Canadian skaters. And I am also dreading how irritating the Canadian skating media will be from now until forever. #PyeongChang

Counting down the number of times we have to see Bobrova Skate this program.

Replying to @SkatingLesson
I am noticing all their [B/S] technical boxes are green

Right, the judges didn't even think it important to doublecheck B/S, but they absolutely got to put the Shibs under a microscope. :COP: :blah:

Sui and Han are in the driver’s seat. You get the BIG MO coming from them. A clean FS, and game over, but the Russians and Canadians are nipping at their heels. So, there is no time to relax! Good luck to all in the FS!!

Re: the rest of the field, welcome to the Olympic Games, the best feeling in the world, or sometimes, a personal dig deep situation to get through it all, as we have in pairs for S&M.

What Aljona and Bruno should try and remember is their journey ... to celebrate their accomplishments as a team. It is hard to keep this in mind when the moments have yet to conclude and when gold is/was the goal, but the fact that Aljona is here four years later with fantastic partner # 2, Bruno, says something -- that is what they should celebrate! I hope Aljona and Bruno can relax and enjoy the FS.

First and foremost, congratulations to the men who reached very unique and personal milestones yesterday that gave us the thrilling conclusion to the men’s event!

For Nathan, the fighting spirit and the realization that it was simply time to cut loose and let it roll proved to be the magical ingredient and served him well.

The podium: Yuzu, now the two-time Olympic Champion rallying back from injury and uncertainty while teammate Shoma Uno lays claim to silver and no doubt what is to be a bright, productive future… And, of course, Javi digging deep for bronze to cap off an outstanding career, possibly. These were the moments.

At the end of the day, all these men had remarkable skates in their own individual way, and let’s not forget to mention Vincent Zhou and Patrick Chan among others. These men went on to write their own script, and although nerve-wracking, the competition ended up being what it was ultimately billed to be, unpredictable and eventful - in so many ways.

http://www.businessinsider.com/2018...papadakis-suffers-wardrobe-malfunction-2018-2:

Wardrobe malfunctions :wall: just don't need to happen... that is what is so frustrating. It is possible to design a costume that brings the desired effect of heat and sizzle, etc. but can also keep itself in place. Fabric sliding or falling down, clasps coming undone, straps snapping or breaking, etc. these things do not need to happen if the original design doesn't push those boundaries in the first place. Skate blades can get caught on the material, but, really, a lot of these costume malfunctions happen because the outfit is designed with very little room for functionality let alone continuous movement which doesn’t make sense for an ice dancer.

Wait?! Another 4 years until ice dance drama captures the entire world, again?! Oy. :drama:

A predictable podium despite a moderate amount of pre-Olympic bronze medal angst.

Now that it is in the books... :COP:

I am very happy and delighted for all three of these lovely, talented ladies. :encore: :encore: :encore: Brava!!!

The podium:

GOLD: Alina, who was magnificent, yet catches unreasonable amounts of grief and resentment for being 15 years old more than anything else. Who could, in all good conscience, begrudged someone of this age accomplishing so much? Who? If she were your daughter, sister or niece you would be thrilled and proud, at least I would think?! And, if by some inexplicable reason you weren't, well, I am not sure what to say about that... Congratulations to Alina!

SILVER: Evgenia, who has been blessed with an enormous amount of talent and the grace to accept that sometimes competition doesn't go your way. Med will be fine. Congratulations to her for everything she has accomplished. She has absolutely no reason to hang her head. Plus, it wasn't that long ago that she herself was taking an enormous amount of heat for being too successful, too favored, too held up, etc. etc. Remember? ;) Congratulations to Evgenia!

BRONZE: Kaetlyn, who has had more than her fair share of ups and downs but has weathered the storm every single time. I am so inspired by her! She wins gold for her attitude alone! Congratulations to Kaetlyn!
