NYC Ballet Fans, part 2

Concours, though, don't have a panel made up solely of other dancers. Was it :judge::skandal?

If I were a dancer, and there was a new AD who was not only in charge of casting the general rep, but also chose the dancers for his new work, I'd be :cheer: that my fellow dancers were in a sulk, because, more for me..
Ah but the jury at POB is half the direction and half the dancer elected representant. At least one Etoile is there each time.
The year Mathilde should have been elected, she was not lucky because the Etoile on the jury hated her ... and she wasn't great, a case of nerves.

McGregor's Raven Girl looks really beautiful and whoever is rehearsing it is awesome, so fluid. Beatriz something, an American and Ryochi Hirano, what a pair!

Is there a link to the Bolshoi footage?

I think Evgenia is in Japan, if I remember correctly.

As far as Cinderella goes, I'll make up my mind after Thursday -- I'm going to the LA performance.

Mathilde's problem IMO is that she had to let go of POB this summer. And she has looked crushed ever since.
But don't mind me, Mathilde's not really your typical POB dancer. She's quite limited too IMO. She's better in roles like Kitri that suits her a lot better than Giselle. And she knew the Noureev version better too, it must be hard to go back to a more musical version.

She also experienced a breakup with her boyfriend/husband (as documented on film), so I'd imagine that's affected her too. I've seen her Kitri online and she's lovely in that role. I think she was let down in this rehearsal by her partner, Carlo Di Lanno, who's rather inexperienced. OTOH, YYT got Tiit Helimets whose partnering skills are just sublime. IIRC, Tiit partnered Mathilde in Giselle last season to rapturous reviews. Still, it's hard to beat YYT in this role for which she is most suited - she is just so gloriously long-limbed, extended, and as IceAlisa pointed out, weightless. I also love how she's so soulful even in rehearsal (thank goodness SFB upgraded their footage to 1080p!).

And I concur with IceAlisa's assessment of Kochetkova - she's a good dancer but her proportions are bothersome.

Just got done with the Royal's stream and am now onto the Bolshoi's...lovely, lovely, lovely...

Ah yes, the breakup with the husband that I've always hated. And the movie he has done about them is brrrrr to me but still :)
I miss Mathilde at POB because she wasn't like all the other ones, you had to take notice when she was dancing. A tad like François ALU who is still very young and so not alike all the others. I sure hope Millepied pushes for more diversity and musicality, because the POB has looked like a dead corpse those past few years under Lefèvre (that I really don't like).

Mathilde is such a beautiful and talented woman, she will find someone good soon I hope.

Beatrix Stix- Brunell. I saw her dance many times when she was with Christopher Wheeldon's former company, Morphoses. She's lovely. And was (or still is, I haven't been on Facebook much lately) dating Corey Stearns

Of sure, Royal Ballet, take our lovely American dancers and leave us with Vanessa Zahorian. :drama:

ABT's loss is the Royal Ballet's gain. RB hired Matthew Golding, Meaghan Hinkis and Eric Underwood, because a certain AD did not appreciate their talent.

Last I heard (last summer) she was. He's a sweet guy. They make a good couple.

We had a great night! My daughter loved it. <3

We did try to see Diana at the stage door, but she was in a party until midnight and my husband (who kindly drove us -- I hate driving in Downtown LA) had work the next morning. We did meet the conductor and Elena Bazhenova, who played the fairy-tramp/fairy Godmother. Both were very sweet and gracious.

I trundled off yesterday to the HD Bolshoi broadcast of Giselle. It gets a B- at best.

Why is Giselle's name written in English above her grave and not in Cyrillic letters? Why do all the Wilis have wings as if they just wandered in from a matinee of La Sylphide and didn't bother changing costumes? Why were there so many close ups of dancers' faces? If Giselle's mother did any mime I wouldn't know, because all we got at that moment was a closeup of Giselle and Albrecht. Why were Zakharova and Polunin such a dreadful mismatch? Will not be rushing out to see either of them in anything anytime soon. Especially couldn't stand Polunin.

On the plus side, Shipulina had the best Myrtha bitch-face ever. Denis Savin (hope I have the name correct) was good as Hans/Hilarion and the couple doing the peasant pas de deux were quite entertaining.

Denis Savin :swoon: Giselle does not take place in Russia but in Rhineland, you know, so why do you expect Cyrillic? I was supposed to go but didn't. Sounds like bad camera work.

I was expecting Cyrillic because it's a Russian production in a Russian theatre, irrespective of where it's set. It just seemed odd to me but I take your point.

Definitely bad camera work. Far, far too many close ups at the expense of seeing the dancers' feet and/or all the action on the whole stage.

Polunin is still employed?

When the National Ballet of Canada was here doing "Alice", the Koch Theatre was playing clips in the lobby during ticket-selling hours. To spark interest, I guess. The only version on DVD is the RB's, which features Polunin. I was in and out of the lobby many times and highly amused by the fact that in every clip I saw with him in it, they were careful never to show his face. I guess his reputation preceded him.

Or with skating, the ceiling camera aka the sky cam, don't you just want to throw a heavy object at it?

Zakharova and Hallberg were a divine match in Giselle.
I can see Zakharova doing a :kickass: 2nd act. Is Hallberg still there?

Hallberg was still recovering from injury last I heard, but I saw him with Zakharova twice just before he went out injured.
