"No one knows Mirai's mirai" Nagasu cheer thread

So, Mirai has another Instagram story up where she is in the airport heading home from Nats wearing her Miss Saigon costume. "And I just got through security."

Jackie Wong's response on Twitter (@rockerskating):
Breaking: Mirai Nagasu lands triple axel on flight to Colorado Springs. #USChamps18

Have to say that while I was a bit hesitant about her adding the 3A this season, it seems to me that having it in her arsenal, as well as demonstrating her ability to cleanly land it in practice (maybe those instagram posts weren't such a bad thing after all) really pushed her over the top with TPTB this season, at least judging by most of the post-Nats. media reports. Add to that, both 3As being overshot in both the SP and the LP were a lot more convincing than had she UR or splatted them.

Agreed. It seemed bonkers when they had Mirai trying the triple axel, before she had ever landed it cleanly, at the Nebelhorn sp in 2015, it seems from the practice reports that the 3A was very consistent for her now. She has the ability at least. It must be incredibly difficult to maintain focus for the rest of a program after the disappointment of not landing it perfectly cleanly at the beginning of her programs.

Mirai changed out her layout a bit from the grand prix-the loop is back in the sp instead of the lutz, and in the lp she repeated the flip jump (instead of doing two loops, one in combo), and did a triple lutz double toe. Is this the layout that we will see at the Olympics? Also, they should bring back the Mirai Olympic roll at her family's sushi restaurant now!

I think the LP layout has changed a few times. Earlier in the season she was repeating the flip (and 3T), then the repeated loop/3T, now back to Flip. I also noticed she moved the 3S to more of the upper center of the rink opposite the judges - earlier it had been more in the upper left corner. I've said it before a few times, but girlfriend not only added the 3A this quad, but also the 3S. She really wasn't attempting it the previous quad, which limited her jumping passes. At 2014 Nats, it was something like 3F-2T, 2A-3T, 3Z// 3R-2T-2R, 3F, 3R, 2A/ Going from a six triple program to an eight triple program is incredible! I think with the Olympic Team monkey off her back, she will skate a lot freer. Also looking forward to her trip to Worlds - hard to believe this is only the 2nd time she's been named to the world team...2008 too young, 2016 added after Polina wd. I'm being greedy now...and want her to do the team event to get a medal...but I think the subs will be in men's and dance. Unless Nathan decides to do both (maybe he could water down his LP with a few less quads) or if the Shibs are picked to do both (which is unlikely). Bradie might be too rock solid and will be picked to do both? Regardless...Mirai is a two time Olympian!

It will be interesting to see what they end up doing with the team event, it could definitely go some different ways. If I was Mirai's team lobbying for participation in the team event, I would point out that she's done 7 rotated triple free skates for the last two years in a row in February, one on Olympic ice :p I've been listening to Mirai's response in the post nationals interviews, and it seems to be that she definitely is sending messages that she wants to be used for the team event. I've seen her talk about wanting to be a leader and emphasizing that she wants to be a part of a team. Plus, she's currently the highest world ranked US ladies skater (#6, though obv numbers will shift after Euros and 4CC), but I can see the ptb wanting to put Bradie in both...

From Angry Asian Man blog:
"Mirai Nagasu, 24, finished second at nationals, which double as the Olympic Trials. While she's had uneven fall season, she is only the second U.S. woman to land a triple axel in international competition. This will be her second Olympics, having placed fourth at the 2010 winter games. You'll remember she was controversially edged out of Team U.S.A. in 2014 by Ashley Wagner, despite finishing ahead of Wagner in competition.

So yeah, this has got to feel pretty sweet. See ya, Ashley."

Oh Mirai, don't get into back-and-forth conversations with Twitter users concerning TSL content...

THE poster deleted his tweet, once the brigade arrived and she hasn’t tweeted anything since. I do think she’ll put her nose back to the grindstone now. Those troll were doing the same thing over the summer, she retorted then and came out strong in September. I hope this makes her even more focused and determined to nail her programs at the Olympics.

There needs to be better 'coaching' of how to handle (i.e., know when to IGNORE) some of the social media banter. While I could totally understand the desire to 'defend' oneself, it is so obviously 'feeding the trolls' and just. not. worth it.

Hope Mirai gets to compete in the Team event. She said during one of her interviews after the short program, that sometimes she wishes she could have been a pair skater so that she could have someone's hand to squeeze (or something like that) or in essence, a partner/teammate. I could see her rallying in the context of a supportive team event.

@livetoskate, Frankly, imo I don't think that blogger's post should even be in Mirai's cheer thread. Such a negative blog from that person.

I was thrilled when Mirai said she was going for the triple axel this Olympic season - I knew she could do it! And she has! Not quite there yet but she's gotten credit for it most of the time and now she's even OVER rotating the thing!! I like how Michael Weiss wondered if there should be a bonus for over rotations on such hard jumps LOL! :COP:

Congrats to Mirai on getting a Procter & Gamble endorsement deal! In her latest Instagram story. https://www.instagram.com/stories/mirainagasu/

YAY!! I am so stoked for Mirai! I'm hoping that with expectations so low for the U.S. ladies that all three will skate lights out at the Games!

I'm so proud of our girl. I still almost can't believe it!

Mirai's Olympics bound again woo hoo! My triple axel Warrior Ice Queen! :respec::rockstar::cheer2::cheer:

I have a feeling like we're going to see Mirai have some of the best skates of her life in Pyeongchang. Essentially there is very little pressure on her. All season long she's been under a lot of pressure, especially at nationals where it was do or die. At the Olympics no one is expecting anything of her. The pressure is off. She gets to go out there and soak up the experience and enjoy herself. If she's able to relax and skate, I feel like she has a much better chance of hitting all of her jumps and performing better. She could end up in the top 5 if she manages to do that.

Mirai should definitely have a place in the team event. I'd say she should skate the SP and Bradie should do the FS. Mirai's SP clean can score her into the 70s even internationally so I think that'd be the best place for her.

I still disagree with them placing the team event before the singles events. I just keep thinking back to what happen to Lipnitskaya. I bet if she had a choice of skating cleanly in the team event or the individual event, she'd have chosen the individual event because it matters more. I just don't want skaters to have their "Olympic moment" in the team event and not be able to replicate that success when the individual event comes.

I thought that P&G stuff just meant that Mirai was getting swag because they are an Olympic sponsor (not that she was getting an endorsement or anything), but I'd love for her to get some extra support.

Mirai retweeted the below fundraising link to help raise funds to send her boyfriend and family to Korea to support her.

It's hard to know for sure since Mirai mentions joining the P&G family. Maybe she just meant as an Olympian, but free swag is free swag! I hope her BF and family can go! I'm making a modest contribution to her cause and sharing/tweeting the link!

But I'm expecting those 3a :cheer2:

So am I!

I would actually be more comfortable with Mirai skating the FS in the team event. The SP imo is more pressure to land that 3A! In the FS she has some more breathing room to ease into it and to add a jump if she has too!

As to Mirai's fund, I gave a very modest contribution (can't wait till payday lol!) for now but the fund is already above $3000! The goal is $11,000 so Mirai and her family should get there very soon thanks to fans, family, and friends! :respec:

Eta: The Pasadena Skate Club mentioned in a comment to someone who asked in that fundraising site that they hope to host a fundraiser soon, perhaps a luncheon or dinner! https://www.youcaring.com/mirainagasu-1066185

Sadly, based on the estimate, $11,000 looks like it would only cover one person. She'd need $33,000 to get both parents and her boyfriend there :(

Do we know if the skaters get tickets for their family members to attend? If they do get free tix, then travel costs for the parents/BF should be under $11K for all three. For her parents - from LAX to ICN nonstop is under $1000 during the week of the ladies event. Due to the restaurant business, I doubt they'd fly in for the team event (if she is selected), and stay over two weeks. Airfare = $3000. Depending on where they stay, you can find inexpensive and nice accommodations in Seoul. Even if it's a $200/night hotel, that would be $1400 for a week/one room. Double it for two rooms = $2800. Transport on the high speed rail to the games could be a couple hundred dollars each person (depending on the pass) = $600. If the 11K/per person suggestion includes food, $100 day/for seven days is $700 = $2100.

Airfare - 3000, Hotels = 2800, Transport = 600, Food = 2100 for a total of $8500 for all three. Tickets are $820 for the B section for ladies short. Free Skate tickets aren't available, so I couldn't check, but I think it's the same price. If you add in three sets of tickets for both, that brings the total to $13,420. I know there's incidentals and what not, but even if you round up to $15,000 for all three - that's way different than the USFS recommendation of 11,000 each. Maybe they have reserved lodging in Pyeongchang and it's more expensive? Maybe they are flying business class?

I'm attending the games, and by far the biggest expense is the tickets. We are using hotel points and airline miles to offset the travel expenses, but it's definitely a $$$ once in a lifetime trip.

Well, their goal is set at $11,000 so perhaps they already they have the rest?

Eta: And they're at over $4000 already in less than a day so who knows? They've got a month! There have already been some VERY generous supporters! There's also the fundraiser her rink is trying to set up! Think positive! Mirai's loved ones will all get there I am sure! Mirai getting there was the BIGGEST hurdle and she's over it woo hoo! :)

People Magazine mentioned Mirai's fundraising efforts! Hopefully, that will get Mirai over the finish line - People has so many more followers! Millions on Twitter alone! Eta: The fund is already at $6000+! It may hit it's mark sooner than I thought!!
