I admit I waited until the official announcement to post anything about her even though she did finish second last night, I just didn't want to speak to soon. I remember how excited/happy I was four years ago and then...I realize that things are much different than they were four years ago, but still...

After the dissapointment four years ago I could not have imagined this would have happened. What a remarkable story and a remarkable athlete! So happy and so proud of her!

I am very, very happy about Mirai. I was heartbroken for her about Sochi, and I was among those that were sure she was done, during these last 4 years. I've never been more glad to be so wrong. :)
She didn't wait for anyone to give her some justice. She took it, like a champ. That's fortitude. Love it. :respec:

Wonderful Hersh article on Mirai: http://www.globetrottingbyphiliphersh.com/home/2018/1/6/comeback-kid-nagasu-has-a-bawl-and-a-ball

I'm coached by one half of a senior ice dancing team competing in San Jose, and he is good friends with Mirai. For all the criticism that Tom Z has gotten over the years, he told me a while ago that Mirai and Tom just clicked, and this coaching arrangement has brought out the best in her. Even she pointed out in another article why Tom worked for her and Frank Carroll ultimately didn't - Tom understood that skaters are human and make mistakes sometimes, whereas Frank wanted her to be perfect all the time. So happy for her!

She did it, she's going to the Olympics!

I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING.
Yeah, I'm totally crying.

That's your Sotnikova moment Mirai. Be pissed and get your spot. They cannot deny you this time.

MIRAI IS GOING BACK TO THE OLYMPICS!!! :kickass:

Medaling three times at a pre-olympics nationals, getting standing Os each time.

She did it! Of course given how consistent the triple axel and her other jumps are in practice, it would have been great to see her land the axel cleanly and take home the gold, but I will definitely settle for the beautiful moment with her final triple loop fist pump and getting the silver medal. Through coaching changes to growth spurts to going through hell with her technique to falling out of favor with her federation. Honestly just her still being in the mix at nationals is such a testament to her resilience. So many people thought she should quit at various points in her career, and now Mirai gets to go to the Olympics a second time. Three years ago after Mirai came in 10th and ran into the wall during her LP, I don't know if even I would have predicted that out of the Ashley, Gracie, Polina trio, Mirai would be the one left standing (and that at pre-olympic nationals, Ashley would be in 4th again, Polina would withdraw from the LP at the last minute, and that Gracie would not be skating, but on Twitter debating with people which of Ashley or Mirai's performances deserved to be scored higher :scream:). Mirai worked hard to improve, and didn't let skating break her spirit.

Also, if there was anyone happier than Mirai last night, it was Tom Z. From him bouncing up and down during her final layback, to his face turning red and screeching at her score. He took her on when no one else would, worked their asses off, taught her the triple axel depite the haters saying it was a waste of time, and he supported her every step of the way. :respec:

These all made me tear up, but the last one posted this morning made me straight CRY! I'm so incredibly proud of Mirai and the resilience she's shown. She's determined that SHE will decide when then wild ride is over, and it will end the way SHE wants it to. Which is apparently going into the history books. You keep slaying Mirai!

Great article. The last quote by Mirai is important and inspiring. She wasn't going to let someone else's decision control her life. I think the way she made a comeback, through ups and downs, she is going to inspire Many skaters and nonskaters in the years to come. I hope she gets some endorsements and commercials. She deserves it.

And more (I know I'm new in this thread; I don't usually participate in these fan threads, but I love Mirai and I'm so happy for her): https://deadspin.com/the-redemption-of-figure-skater-mirai-nagasu-1821763830
I love the video in that film and how she keeps raising the bar. "I'm always looking for a challenge.... I want to become a skater that is so mentally strong that I know and I'm confident in myself that I can pull (the 3A) out of me every single time."

And we can see that confidence growing every time she steps out on the ice!

At 2018 US Nationals, Mirai:

- Had 2 of 7 elements reviewed in the SP, but still had the highest TES Base Value of 37.01, compared to 32.84 from the top finisher

- Had 5 of 12 elements reviewed in the LP, but still had the highest TES Base Value of 65.08, compared to 62.22 from the top finisher

- Exceed the top finisher by 4.17 + 2.86 = 7.03 in TES Base Value over both segments of the competition

Mirai was a very good sportswoman and did not rely at all on subjectivity to score well.

Just a little more time is all we're asking for
Cause just a little more time could open closing doors
Just a little uncertainty can bring you down

And nobody wants to know you now
And nobody wants to show you how

So if you're lost and on your own
You can never surrender

And if your path won't lead you home
You can never surrender
And when the night is cold and dark
You can see, you can see light
Cause no one can take away your right
To fight and never surrender

With a little perseverance you can get things done
Without the blind adherence that has conquered some

And nobody wants to know you now
And nobody wants to show you how

So if you're lost and on your own
You can never surrender
And if your path won't lead you home
You can never surrender

And when the night is cold and dark
You can see, you can see light
Cause no one can take away your right
To fight and never surrender
To never surrender

I wish she could skate an exhibition to this.

How about Mirai Nagasu: Redemption and Amazing Grace
That is great but I would omit Amazing. She is not religious AFAIK and that was Courtney's music. Redemption and Grace fits her well. I don't suppose we could have Redemption, Grace and Adorableness. :) I am sure @bardtoob would prefer Redemption, Grace and Scoring Potential. :D

I like Mirai- Redemption and Grace

OR

Grace under pressure
