Well at least the BESP commentators noticed her improved expression efforts, I would have given her higher interpretation marks here at least than what she has been getting for her past competitions. I enjoy Rika, but I think that Mirai's posture/carriage compared to hers should have earned her equal or better PCs. Sadly, we know that PCs marks more often go up for people when they are deemed "consistent". If Mirai had been able to rotate her combo and lutz here, we may have seen higher PCs. I am just grateful to see her giving any kind of face and skating with some more fire and freedom. Unfortunately, going for the higher technical content is not really bearing fruit yet, but it's still-I believe-the highest SP score that she's gotten on the grand prix, and that's with two unders, negative GOE on the axel, and a ! on the lutz...

eta. 3 judges gave her -3 for the 3lz, but how many times have we seen elements with falls receive even positive GOE :rolleyes:

Lollllll i'm the same way but when it comes to her and all of USA pairs I always know to try and deduct about eight or nine points off that once they finish their ending pose

Yes and that is fine and I am sure they can justify -1 to -3. I am not defending those judges that have given positive GOE to skaters that fall or have visible errors on any element, I am just saying there were a lot of things wrong with Mirai's lutz this competition so I'm not going to get upset over it.
 
Mirai showed more emotion and the 3A was backwards, so I'm happy.

I think 3T on the combination was underrotated (Heck, you could see the tracing on the ice, clear as day!) because she was worried about space.

The 3Lz was !ish and I won't deny it. Mirai can do a deeper outside edge without any trouble. I personally think it was just barely less than 1/4 short in rotation, but I can see how a technical caller might say it is underrotated.

Mirai still had the highest TES base of the field and owned the program all the way through! :D

Today seemed like an “ i worked too hard to fail” performance. Still, more work to do. Of the USA women, i believe the most in her. She’s still my pick for US champion. My faaaaaavorite part is she went out and friggin made it happen. I can rejoice in the character it showed to grit that performance out when she could have let it go. Also, of all the skaters being ambitious with a new, big ticket skill in an important season , she in my opinion is someone that should. She has learned that she can land the Axel and keep it together for the performance. US champ and World medalist this year maybe? Lol.

Only under was on the triple A attempt, and no edge call on the lutz :cheer2: I think Mirai had the third highest TES, no? Very respectable in such a competitive field. This gives her some nice momentum heading into nationals. I think they should give her golden spin if she still wants it (though I guess the entries have closed, plus I don't want her to get worn out). I'd love to see the fiery attitude across both programs, but no question she is out for blood this season and determined to make the Olympic team. Highest grand prix total for her ever, and very close to her personal best. Even with the 9th place at Rostelecom, her free scores overall this season have been much more stable compared to past seasons.
 
She should do what coach tells her. JMO. This is no time to get all independent. She keeps talking about his strategic daily planning. So use it.

Do people think she will go to 4Ccs? It seems like a terrible idea to me.

If she is on the Olympic team I doubt it. Although I would love for her to go into the Olympics as the 4CC champion.

This was a good competition for her and she is firmly working her way up. Despite up and downs with the UR' calls, the consistency she has been showing in the LP's this season is quite remarkable.
I think they worked hard since COR to improve the SP so I hope the same amount of effort will be put into the LP heading into Nationals.
It was sweet to see the K&C reaction after finishing her LP...really a statement that she does not yet fully believe she can throw those scores down.
I cannot help wondering how tough Nationals will be. I am imagining a lot of different scenarios but cannot help wondering what the outcome for the Olympic selection will be if lets say Bradie scores well at SKAM and the top 4 at Nationals will be:
1.Ashley
2.Karen
3.Bradie
4.Mirai

Of course, I hope Mirai will show the same attack as on the GP circuit and rather end up in the top 2...but the "National" ice is slippery :watch:

I still tend to think she should "just" go with the 2A (at least for the SP) at Nationals. The pressure will already be immense on most of the top ladies to position them well heading into the LP and I wonder if the 3A will not just add additional pressure...
But you never know with Mirai, perhaps the 3A adds to fuel her focus and energy!

I agree. I still fail to see much improvement in Mirai's connection to the music. She skates thru the elements, admittedly with much more speed in the first 1/2 - 2/3 of the program but it really isn't until the last 30- 40 seconds or so, where I actually see facial expressions. Transitions are lacking in front of many of the jumps (lots of speed though). Her PCS were deserved. Compare her "performance" to Carolina (though I don't necessarily agree with Carolina's scores either), but Carolina truly performs the entire free skate. Can not say the same for Mirai.

I think she should continue to go for the 3A in both programs. It's likely to score at least what a 2A would, so the risk is not that great. Scored correctly on PCS, Mirai would be comfortably in the 130s. And there is no chance Bradie Tennell will bump her off the team...

I disagree on PCS. She is well below Kostner so it's a false comparison. No one is saying she should beat the best, only that she should be probably 4 or 5 points higher than she is.
 
I AM VERY MUCH APPRECIATING THAT MIRAI IS NOT SCALING BACK HER CONTENT! SHE HAS HER PLANNED ELEMENTS, SHE IS FIT ENOUGH TO DO THEM, AND SHE IS DOING THEM, RAIN OR SHINE, TWO 3A!


. . . Goodness knows, the American Ladies need more of this kind of ambition.


I hope Mirai can figure out what strong emotion to channel for the LP because I certainly think it helped her in the SP.

I don’t have a problem with Mirai’s PCS really, but the way PCS can seem so arbitrary generally, especially when skaters of similar skill and rank receive such different PCS.
