Netflix/Prime/Hulu/BritBox Binge Watching: Coronavirus Edition

Highly recommend “The Serpent” (Based on the story of serial killer Charles Soubraj) made by BBC/Netflix. Grim, but full of a 70s glamour vibe which made it watchable. First episode is a bit annoying as it jumps all over the place but it made sense as the 8 parter went on. Not particularly gory either.

Just watched the series finale of 'Vikings'.
This has been such a great show over the last 8 years with some absolute breathtaking scenes.
The show was so well written, staged, shot and acted.
It was a good end to it, not a great one, more a worthy send-off to the remaining characters and the show.

Still, even with the cast changes and new storylines over the years, I always have looked forward to new episodes and will miss this series a lot.

Spoiler: Notes on end / surviving characters

Personally I like that my 2 fav vikings, Hvitserk and Ubbe, survived in the end and found their own peace.
I was especially happy here for Hvitserk, after the journey he has had.

I liked the last moments between Ivar and Hvitserk and the overall development of Ivar in season 6.
Especially the scenes with Igor have been great.

I meant to put this in my queue because I love watching people create things I never could. I somehow forgot about this until you mentioned it. I am currently on episode 6 of season 1. I plan on binge watching this weekend so I may end up with season 2 by tomorrow. Will get back to you later.

Does season 3 of Star Trek Discovery get better? I'm about half way through and it's not grabbing me. It's a bit disappoinging aftar the first 2 seasons, which after a few initial qualms I thought were great.

Also started Bridgerton, but I've only seen one episode so no opinion yet.

We've only watched Season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery and I am finding it kind of cheesy and not my thing so please don't tell me that that it gets worse!

I thought season 2 was better than season 1, and the final episode was in particular quite compelling (i.e. I watched the TV rather than multi-tasking). Season 3 is like they're starting over again, although the Vulcans have just turned up so maybe things are looking up.

Just finished the latest season of Last Tango in Halifax. I can't help it. I love that show. Mostly for Nicola Walker and Sarah Lancashire.

Just started watching The Surgeon's Cut on Netflix. The first episode was about an England-based surgeon who performs in-utero surgery and his patients always are awake and alert during their procedures! My heart was in my mouth the entire episode. The next one is about a Florida-based neurosurgeon. We'll see what that brings. And make sure you have a strong stomach.

Watched Bridgerton few weeks ago. That was a bit silly, but also fun and overall felt like a right choice for the holidays.

I am very much enjoying 'Pretend it's a City' documentaries/ mini-series on Netflix. It's directed by Martin Scorsese and featuring his (and some other people's) conversations with Fran Lebowitz - witty, fun and interesting to watch.

And we watched documentary about the legendary Kresty prison in St Petersburg (it's the first Russian documentary on Netflix, I think). I have known about that place my whole life - from city's history, history classes and etc, but was still terrified.

I’ve been rewatching Six Feet Under on HBO Max. I didn’t watch the show regularly when it first came out, so this is my first time watching every episode in order. I forgot how amazing this show was, and it’s eerie to see so many actors you now know look ten or so years younger. They got some amazing actors on this show. This show would have been a big hit on social media, I think.

I‘ve been watching Dinosaurs on Disney+. I remembered watching this sitcom when it was on ABC and I had this impression that it was a typical family sitcom of that era but with Dinosaurs but also vaguely remember the series finale which actually addressed the wooly mammoth in the room in regards to the ultimate fate of the species. .

But wow, this an incredibly smart series and has aged quite well with the themes of each episode, which are often quite dark. For example, the third episode is about the tradition of throwing the elderly into a tar pit after they reach the age of 72 and the eagerness which the main character looks forward to doing the task. The son is portrayed as being quite sensitive and many episodes deal with him confronting toxic masculinity within his society.

Just watched "The Dig"- about the excavation of the Sutton Hoo ship burial. It has an excellent cast with Ralph Fiennes (with an impeccable Suffolk accent) and Carey Mulligan. Lovely British period piece (1939) with some real archeology in it.

I checked out Tubi and found a phenomenally awful series called “Space Precint” about intergalactic cops in 2040. Might be the worst sci-fi I’ve seen and there is a lot of garbage out there.

We watched The Undoing on HBO. I did find the show pretty absorbing, although I agree with some of the criticisms in various reviews of it that I read. Nicole Kidman was amazing IMO; I thought she did a great job portraying different nuances of her character. Hugh Grant, on the other hand .... ugghh. His character was so awful that it got kind of hard for me to separate the character and the acting. (Never been a fan of Grant's charming cad persona.) Unlike other people, I didn't find the ending/reveal of the killer to be a disappointment, if only because any other ending would have been worse. I felt like there was some implicit social commentary in the series but I would have appreciated more of this or for it to be handled more directly or something.

We started The Flight Attendant but only got 2 episodes in. Kaley Cuoco's character ....

I watched this last night. Very good. Interesting seeing Fiennes in a role like that.

I also watched the documentary BlackPink about the Korean girl group. I am not a K-Pop fan but it was a very good documentary.

Just finished watching The Boys and while I certainly enjoyed it, I wasn’t blown away by it. The blood and gore isn’t my thing.

I enjoyed watching Ethos on Prime. Set in Turkey, it is about a devout young Muslim woman who after a number of fainting spells, begins therapy with a very secular therapist. The first season, which consists of eight episodes, explores social, cultural, and religious differences between the two women, their families, and their friends. It has been dubbed into a number of languages, including English, is beautifully crafted and well paced, and has some fine cinematography. Öykü Karayel is spellbinding as Meryem, the young Muslim woman.

I watched The Prom last night. Really enjoyed it. I didn't think the music was groundbreaking and it kind of came across as a bit corny at times. But the performances were so good and enjoyable, the music execution spot on and I had tears at the end.
