My guess is that the hip issue is a chronic condition aggravated by the back-to-back scheduling, and that hopefully the time off will get him back in shape.
---------------------------------------------------------
Gala schedule is up. Nathan skates 2nd to last and has an encore. Any guesses as to the encore? I think he'll do the Mozart chsq.

Nathan's FS from CBC with comments from Elladj Balde and Kevin Reynolds

Doing floor abs
First it is not fair that you guys get Ted Barton.
Next I think Nathan needs his own category.

Just rewatched Caravan. I loved nemesis and had such high hopes for this version of his SP, but I agree. He should bring back Caravan. For so many reasons that feels like such a fit. It’s energetic and brings out a happy positive energy from him. The crowd gets into it and I think his skating was so much more free and less cerebral feeling in that program. It would be a good move for him to do now should he make the GPF. And if not he should do another comp to get it out there.

Nathan spoke on the Ice Skating Podcast at around 8m55s. Sounds like he wants to enter a competition between now and GPF.

I didn't get that impression at all. It sounded like he wasn't sure if he would qualify for the GPF and was thinking, in general, about wanting another competition this fall.

Could be, but I don't know why he keeps saying he's not sure about qualifying when he has. His stats profs will be disappointed.
He probably wasn't thinking about it much while trying to get himself back on track physically. I'm sure once someone sat him down and said "Nathan, look at the points, your 1st/3rd beats out any 2nd/2nd" he went "oh, yeah, derrrrrr..."

Yale article on Skate Canada

Q&A with Maiia K. She says she'd like to be Nathan's friend and that he is the best skater in the world.
Here's the accompanying video

Nathan and Sota: Then and now
Back when Sota was struggling with injury Nathan said in a Japanese interview that he wanted Sota to come back.

Nathan pulled a Kwan this year and stayed in NA for the GP series. I believe he made it to the GPF in December where he will likely face Hanyu. What should his strategy be? I think he should work to beat him early on because another loss will be treated as a loss of momentum. OTOH, I don't think this will be a Clash of the Titans because normally, Hanyu is not interested in peaking early.

Hanyu is injured and withdrew from NHK so he won’t be at the final.

I have adored Nathan since seeing him skate "Peter and the Wolf". What a cutie he was! And now, what a hottie he is. I love his skating and I'm rooting for him all the way this season. He is a spectacular champion.

My feelings exactly about Nathan. Except the hottie part LOL! He is one of my Ice Children. Has been since he was a cute little boy, skating to "Peter and the Wolf"! 💖 I do understand why so many fans consider him a hottie though! 😁

Nice words from Dima:
I respect Nathan as a person and athlete and have had many chances to hang out with him. I was really inspired by his results in Canada, saw that he is a truly strong person. For me he is a role model from which I derive the energy to exist.

Nathan made a small cameo appearance along with Tara and Johnny on the NBC Breeders Cup broadcast.

LOL. Actually I am old enough to be his (young) grandmother but I still appreciate his hottie status. I also feel that way about Logan Bye, too! Watched them both when they were wee ones.

In a Japanese TV interview Shoma talks about trying to be more like Nathan
世界で見るとネイサン・チェンが一歩ぬけて1人だけ1つ高いレベルの構成をやっていて。しかも誰よりも安定している。僕もその域に少しでも足を踏み入れられる選手になれるよう練習していきたい。
When you look at the World Nathan Chen is a step ahead, and he alone does the most difficult layouts. Yet he's more stable than anyone else. I want to practice so that I can be an athlete who can step into that domain even if just a little bit.

Raf's Russian interview. As expected, he attributes Nathan's poor SA performance mostly to an overly ambitious layout combined with a lack of prior competitions.

Was Nathan's SP layout really ambitious for him though? It wasn't like Nathan was executing the 4ltz and the 4flip for the first time this season. Those jumps have been in his repertoire for a couple of years now, and hadn't he also done those jumps in past SP ?The only "new" thing he attempted this season was putting back the 4loop. I suspect that Nathan will go back to the 4toe and 4f for the SP, because the main thing is to be clean and probably take out the 4loop for the long.

It's not something he's had a lot of success with recently, though. He did it at Nats but was very mediocre, scoring lower than he did the previous year with just 4F and 4T3T. And of course at Worlds he fell on the 4Lz.

ETA: To add to that, in recent years he's been successful by starting off slowly and gradually building up his difficulty as the season progressed. Here he went for max BV right off the bat.
