Musicals that aren't warhorses

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a couple of Dear Evan Hansen programs before long.

I saw a Broadway musical last week that I loved, called Bandstand. Lots of swing-style music that might work for skating. Only problem is a lot of the songs on the album have dialogue in them, so they might need to be tweaked a bit (unless Radionova used them ;) ).

Aside from Phantom of the Opera, it seems like most musicals aren't warhorses and would offer a lot of options for skaters. I'd love to see a skater do Candide. That's probably been used before but it's not overused.

I would suggest "Little Shop of Horrors". Love that musical!
YES PLEASE!!

I also recently saw the musical Falsettos (its limited run was recorded and just released as a special event in theatres - it will also be airing on PBS in October). Some of the music is quite beautiful, though given the subject matter of the play and songs (Taking place in the late 70s and early 80s, a man leaves his wife for his male lover...
And a certain medical crisis is on the rise at that time...
I don't think many would want to use the music.

The music from Candide is really nice. I have seen skaters use it but not overly so.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is one of those musicals with songs you would have heard but not overdone. Good fun and character driven music. And I want to see Calamity Jane used by someone.

I love this thread so much, because I'm in the musical theatre industry and half of the suggestions here are what we would consider audition warhorses in that world  It's really interesting to see how different music speaks to different groups/purposes.

From musicals that are "overdone" in our world but not in the skating world, I'd definitely say Wicked, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Evita, and Gypsy. Carousel and South Pacific also have really beautiful scores that I don't see much of. She Loves Me has a wonderful score with lots of character-y songs like "Vanilla Ice Cream" and "She Loves Me" (This Tony Awards medley has a pretty good selection). The Cole Porter songbook has a ton of great, jazzy selections, especially the scores of Anything Goes and Kiss Me Kate.

From more "obscure" musicals, I definitely second the poster(s) who said Aida and Ragtime, and I would add Waitress ("She Used To Be Mine" and "You Matter To Me" are great ballads, and "Bad Idea" would make a really fun dance/pair program). I think "Charming" or "Dust and Ashes" from Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 could make really interesting programs for singles. I think one or two teams might have used it already, but any of the music from Once would also be beautiful.

Regarding some of the more recent hits, like Dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton, I actually don't think they'd make great programs. With the exception of the two Aaron Burr songs ("Wait For It" and "The Room Where It Happens") and possibly "Satisfied" or "Burn", Hamilton is so rap-heavy, rhythmically complex, and story-centric that it would be hard to skate to. Dear Evan Hansen is a very, very poppy score that doesn't strike me as very skateable either. Stuff like DEH, Next to Normal, and Spring Awakening seems more suited for a show program than a competitive one, if at all.

Yes to all these songs! I would love someone or a dance team to skate to The Origin of Love especially.

I've also longed for programs to The Fantasticks original cast recording. Jerry Orbach's Try to Remember would make for a gorgeous program.

Actually someone just skated to Sweeney Todd at Lake Placid last weekend. Too had I don't remember which team. It was very effective.

I would also like to see Avenue Q as background music, even if just to freak the judges out. :D

A veteran skater could use "I'm still here" from Follies.
