Music rights clearance issues (policy being implemented by the ISU starting in 2024)

Jean-Michel Blais proud to have his work used in FS. Mao Shimada have used « passepied » winning her first Jr Worlds with it. « Roses » was LaLa’s free dance not so long ago and now we have Kevin Aymoz :

Well, maybe all this mess about music rights will bring something good out of it. I think skaters and their staff are far too repetitive and stale, when it comes to the choice of music, and their editing/mix-up.

There are many countries and young artists who make good music. I say, search more and listen to a lot more. Get in contact with young and talented musicians, ask them to write a piece of music for you and pay them directly without even having to go through the big sharks. Be more creative.

I think it's a lot more likely that it makes things much more repetitive and stale as skaters only use music that they know they can clear...

I think you are correct. But I hope some of them do take the idea of getting a lesser-known artist to write them something original and pay them.

The cost of hiring a songwriter to both create a song and produce the kind of high-quality demo you'd need in order to skate to the track can be anywhere from $5000 to $20,000 (though to be fair the latter is mostly for advertising jingle writers at the top of the field). Costwise, doing that twice a season is as far out of reach of the majority of competitive skaters as many rights purchases are - if not more so.

there is no way usfs didn't get this cleared like sorry to this person but I think they just didn't tell you about it

Right - what are the chances that he doesn't actually own the rights to the song and there is no requirement to notify him or ask permission?

High I'm sure. You don't have to notify the singer. You have to acquire the rights. Those are frequently not the same.

Right! Taylor had to fight hard, long to get her book. The Beatles didn't have their rights for the longest time.

Unfortunately, most don't own their books. Many don't understand what they sign over when it gets published.

People in show business and sports should avoid talking politics. You are always going to have half of the people angry at you. You risk damaging your career.

Why is it always rightwing folks with this opinion? Lots of people, including people in sports and entertainment, aren't so selfish that they put getting ahead in their careers before of speaking out about injustices when they see them. And if someone's politics include being a big fan of inhumanity- well it's good to know that too.

This is cute, given the numerous examples of conservatives in Hollywood getting cancelled, black-listed or grey-listed for expressing their political views. But, sure, it's the rightwing folks speaking up to criticize anyone with leftwing views that are the problem. Except speaking up with objective criticism doesn't hurt any of those leftwing sports & entertainment celebrities in the wallet nearly as much as the machine, groupthink mentality of those running the biz does to conservatives.

I was referring to the songwriter. There are a lot of conservative actors in Hollywood (Kevin Sorbo, Dean Cain) that can't get work.
