ETA:

Press release re. the May 14th show: https://www.disneyabcpress.com/abc/shows/dancing-with-the-stars-athletes/episodes/episode-2603/

"In round one, each couple will perform an individual dance inspired by the MVP in each athlete’s life."
Mirai Nagasu and Alan Bersten – Quickstep – “Bo$$” by Ray Chew Live

"Then in round two of the evening, the athletes will lace up for a Ballroom Battle dance-off..."
Adam Rippon & Jenna Johnson and Mirai Nagasu & Alan Bersten – Jive – “Johnny B. Goode” by Chuck Berry

That's a nice gig for Mirai, blogging for PEOPLE!

I'm off to check out "Bo$$". Never heard of that song, nor Ray Chew Live to be honest. I'm more into Classic Rock, Baroque and Classical. I don't listen to the radio very much anymore so I'm way out of the loop! Also, my nephews are all in the Air Force now so they're not around to keep auntie up to date on popular music LOL!

Mirai and Alan will be on the Hallmark Channel's morning show Home and Family tomorrow morning May 10th.

Thanks for the heads up! I set my dvr to record that show!

I was struck how graceful it was - willowy arms and soft shoulders. And those kicks to the side and on toe could have been Cyd Charisse in "Singing in the Rain" Would love to see this in her skating. But, hard to do when you're squeezing 8 triples into a long program.
Now if you're Mirai, you absolutely love being compared to Cyd Charisse! Granted, Mirai may be too young to know about Cyd, but if she does, she'll appreciate the comment and bets are that she should win DWTS!!

MIRAIIII.

We all know she belonged in the finale, let’s be honest. I knew this was what was gonna happen, I even had the post prepared.

The expectations put on the skaters (except maybe for Tonya, where most of the expectations for people going in were low) were extremely high, and I was wondering how she was going to do, since the ballroom dancing would be new to her (ahem…BALLROOM DANCING…..lots of people could see where the wind was blowing when they put two contemporaries in a four episode season), and we’ve seen her have difficulty translating the energy and emotions that she has in her exhibitions to a competitive setting. But she killed it, and she can be proud that she pulled off some of the most impressive dances of the season.

The cake was a bit baked against her from the beginning, but that’s reality tv for ya. I tried to vote during the ballroom battle and couldn’t even get it to work.

So sad for Mirai!! She definitely deserves to be in the finale. I hate that this was such a short season and Mirai’s experience is cut so short. I would have loved to see her do more dances. But she was amazing in the dances she did get to do. After Stars on Ice wraps up, I hope she will take a well deserved vacation. And then I do hope she will compete at least one more season and bring some of what she learned on DWTS to her competition programs.

I was on the phone, just voted, and did not realize this had happened. I saw Mirai's dance, thought she was superb and saw she and Adam tied in the head to head so never expected her to not make the final. Words cannot describe how ridiculous this result was! Hard to believe Tonya would have more audience support! So very disappointing.

Too bad about the result last night, but what a remarkable season it's been for her. I could not have imagined last August that she would be an Olympic medalist and competing on DWTS...it's been a wild ride this year!

This! Let's think back to just a year ago and how it wasn't particularly likely that Mirai would get to participate in the team event, let alone the accomplishment of just making it to the olympics! She had to vault ahead of a lot of people to get that spot, and people gave her crap about even getting to skate in the team event right up until the moment she skated. Glad for Mirai's $$ opportunities too, from Japan Open to her KT Tape sponsorship, to DWTS. I like Karen, but Mirai is really the person who I would like to have seen a book from. Seeing the "Sad Mirai" narrative from the past four years really makes me appreciate and be proud of her confidence on DWTS, social media trolls be damned!

Mirai really has grown as a person in the last quad. I remember after she got her scores at 2013 and she burst into tears before leaving the kiss and cry. Each year I saw her get a little stronger and more confident. I’m disappointed that she had to leave too soon, but I’m happy that she made it this far and she proved to herself that she can be a performers as well. She’s had an amazing year. I hope when all the dust settles, she can see exactly what an amazing woman she’s become.

She was set up to fail. The script they gave her made her seem very petulant and full of herself. I really disliked most things she said on this show. It was a turn off.
Even some things Adam has been saying in the role he is playing are a bit yuk whereas Tonya is played up as a vulnerable victim who only needs a chance and the judges are all playing their roles. I am now guessing that they are setting Tonya up to win.

Tonya can’t win. She just doesn’t have the votes. She barely made it in the finale! They had to low ball Mirai so Tonya could make it.
They do this every season. A front runner is always shockingly eliminated before the finale. Always! It gets headlines. Fans scream she was robbed and voters in turn tweet there displeasure.

Adam’s videos are massively popular. He is massively popular. He gets the scores. He’s had this in the bag since he showed up.

Agreed.

A person doesn’t even have to follow a show or ‘competition’ like DWTS to understand that the eventual winner sometimes has nothing to do with how they really danced. Competitions like this are more about the flavor of the month, who’s making headlines, etc. Sometimes they get it right, but mostly it smacks of behind-the-scenes maneuvering and agenda. Even the soon-to-be-crowned winner knows they’re going to win. Hey, sounds a bit like skating! :2faced: That being the case, Mirai’s disappointment shouldn’t last too long because she knows how these things can go.
It would be rich though if Harding pulled off the upset! :EVILLE:

I hope Mirai enjoyed herself. She looked beautiful every time… because she is beautiful! :glamor: :respec:

I never took DWTS seriously and I rarely watch it, unless the cast includes someone I like. Mirai danced wonderfully but the politics got her again. Tonya better than beautiful Mirai? Ridiculous. Tonya shouldn't even have made the semifinals. Her dancing was awful.

This has to be maddening. I am not going to watch the finale.

What do YT views have to do with audience votes? There might be plenty of people (e.g. those not in USA) who've watched Adam's vids multiple times but haven't cast a single vote. Whereas a football player like Josh (a sport massively popular in USA but not in Europe or elsewhere) might not get those views but might get a lot of votes from the DWTS target audience who actually vote. And who might not like Adam, for various reasons...

Thank you for putting things in perspective! It's not all doom and gloom!

After it became known that Adam and Tonya were doing the show, I totally thought they were not going to cast a 3rd skater. Just getting to do DWTS almost kinda counts as a win for her, I would think. So, there's that.

Nothing except when he's viral. And he is. He is going to win.

Clearly Mirai is a better dancer than Tonya. I think it stinks because Mirai has her own hard luck story but she practiced and competed and won her spot on the team. At one point Team Tonya simply did not want to compete and chose to eliminate the competition. We all know how that played out. I don't hate Tonya but Mirai represents our beloved sport beautifully and she deserved to move on to the finals based on her talent. She was simply better than Tonya. Oh well.

I disagree with your comment that Mirai sounded petulant or full of herself. I do agree she was set up to get eliminated, first by dancing first last night, second by the lowballing by the judges (Len 8, really?), third by having her have to compete against Adam in the dance off, fourth by making sure Tonya got the extra points in her dance off (what if she had been paired against Adam?). And maybe a fifth reason, too, in that the show seems to be fixed. A good dancer is always eliminated too early. How does that happen, every time?

The minute Mirai and Adam were sold as best friends it was pretty clear that Adam would make the final, and Mirai wouldn't. Just as with Meryl and Charlie, only one could go. Mirai's face once Adam and Tonya were selected for the final told the story - she knew there couldn't be another figure skater in the mix.

Which is too bad because I thought all her dances were wonderful. But hopefully she knows that it's just a reality comp, and she got to perform a dance in honor of her mother.

I do think one problem was having the quickstep as Mirai's dance. While Mirai's dance was more difficult in the steps and choreography, the contemporary pieces had more emotional impact. Drawing as the first to go and the quickstep were hard to overcome in a close race. Also, of course, going up against the popular favorite in the dance off. Still, the judges low-balled her scores to make those factors the deciding ones.

Neither will I. I was hoping for an "honest" judging but this has not been one. I'm done with DWTS (I've stopped watching before and only tuned in to see Mirai)

She danced it beautifully, though. I haven't watched DWTS in years (and haven't missed it one iota) but I looked at the video of her quickstep when everyone was saying how good it was. They were right, it really was!
