Mirai Nagasu Cheer thread: Return to Olympus

Well, Rome wasn't built in a day, nor triple axels, nor dance spins... :D

Very true! I also wonder if spinning in shoes might feel really weird at first when you spin so much on ice on a blade? I have no idea how much dance training Mirai has done, but it is possible it would initially be more difficult for her especially in a shoe with a heel.

I just watched Mirai on Access Hollywood. The host asked her about continuing to compete (in skating), and she said something like "I'm definitely not going to make it to the next olympics. There's a new crop of girls. I'm ready. I did my triple axel and I want to go into something else and...I might compete a couple more years because I love skating, but" (and then talked about how she wants to do some hosting, etc. So it sounds like a possibility of continuing for a few more seasons, but not committing to it yet). They also asked her about meeting Tonya and she said that Tonya didn't know who she was when they met (and that Mirai did not outright say to her that she did the triple axel at the olympics, but said something like "Girl, I'm your kindred spirit, I love axels too".

I appreciate these revealing comments by Mirai, especially re her fans, that she is being specific about her plans.

It’s refreshing when a skater will actually voice their intentions. Of course, they are not required to by any means, and fans are not entitled to know by any means. However, I do applaud when a skater, without hesitation, will announce their retirement or if they intend to remain competitive.

Some athletes are genuinely mixed as to what the future will hold for them, and so they delay. However, most know precisely when they fully intend to call it a career, but choose to postpone or never make an announcement so that sponsors and any/all endorsement deals will not dry up, etc. I can see the logic in this, but it’s kind of disingenuous, yet at the same time business savvy. :cold:

Major props to the skaters (recently Duhamel & Radford, Max Aaron, etc.) who were confident enough to retire… In the past, Belbin & Agosto for having made it entirely clear they were actually retiring and not playing coy… That was refreshing, for a change.

I’m not one to engage in the practice or discussion of retiring skaters by suggesting they hang it up, already, find something else they’re good at or love to do, go back to school, etc. etc. That is usually unwelcome, unappreciated advice from fans, even though it is generally well-intended. Still, fans do it all the time.

What I’m getting at, is that I honestly appreciate specificity which saves the fan base a considerable amount of time not wasted on guessing what is up with the skater(s) they support by taking the guesswork out. :drama:

Many might say that’s taking all the (speculative) fun away… :barrel

I’ll say it’s more of a pipe dream… :smokin: :hat1:

Re: Mirai, if she is happy, that’s what counts. :)

I think it's sad because I think that Mirai doesn't have confidence in her ability. I think she has the technical ability to continue despite some issues with under rotations.

 Yeah, okay... that's how she landed the 3A @ the Olympics - by having no confidence in her ability... but, then you go on to suggest that she does...

Well, @IloveFS has a point, @Weve3 . It's very telling that Mirai landed her only clean 3a this year when her team needed her to do it. When it's just for herself, it doesn't happen.

That doesn't mean it's a confidence issue. ;)

ETA: There is nothing very telling about it, but rather your interpretation of it.

I think you misunderstand where I was going with the comment - I was referring merely to her comment about the new crop of girls coming up.... I think that she can compete with him.

I am and will always be a huge fan of Mirai's.

The burdens put on her when so young after she won US Nat'ls had to affect her! She has the performance of her life, but isn't qualified to do Worlds back then due to her age! She then qualifies again in 2014, but is overlooked and replaced with someone else! Her emotions have to be a bit scrambled with a very tumultuous career!:duh::yikes:

I haven't misunderstood anything about your comment. You are assuming Mirai lacks confidence in her ability to compete w/ the new crop of girls. I don't believe Mirai is lacking confidence or feeling sad about anything, right now. You are.

My heart broke for her in 2014 when she wasn't named to the Olympic team.

I remain skeptical that some of you are truly Nagasu fans  :sneaky: A few of you like to come into her cheer thread occasionally and take a swipe. For those of us that really are Mirai Nagasu fans, we get it, already. Thanks. ;)

Mirai was on the Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Vess podcast.

Listening to the podcast, the vibe that I got was that she is done with skating, but jmo. He asked her a few times if she was planning to continue, and she kind of avoided it and said that she is focusing on Dancing with the Stars, and that she hopes to take advantage of all other opportunities that may come from it and "see what she gets". But if she doesn't have many opportunities, I could see her skating more, but that's the way I feel the wind is blowing at this point...

In terms of the podcast, Jonathan is a skating fan, but also more of a "fan" in that you can definitely spot errors when he talks about skating if you follow it closely :p At one point, Mirai said that Patrick Chan's skating melts her heart and speaks to her soul, and Jonathan said "I was so happy when he won worlds!" and Mirai says "Yes, and he got his Olympic gold medal in the team event" and then Jonathan realizes that she is not talking about Nathan Chen. He also had no idea that she skated at worlds this year...Other than that, Mirai wouldn't answer who her favorite skater of all time was, but answered that Hanyu was her favorite jumper, and said a few times emphatically that she thought Alina deserved her win at the Olympics (because of her lutz loop/taking advantage of the rules for backloading) when Jonathan pressed her on it because he thought Evgenia should have won.

This interview is an hour long, so keep that in mind, but it is really the best interview with Mirai I have seen/heard. Her genuineness and her genuinely sweet, kind, and respectful personality really shine. I don't regret "wasting" my time on it.

Thanks for sharing the podcast link, @GullyGirl84! :)

Mirai was interviewed before the SOI show in Pittsburgh this past Friday and talked about what she will wear for her salsa number in tonight's DWTS premiere, among other things -- article: http://figureskatersonline.com/news...e-floor-mirai-nagasu-is-living-in-the-moment/

Mirai said she "might compete a couple more years because I love skating" around the 2-minute mark of her Access Live solo interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5NkyuUiFz0

Link for tonight's online live voting - two contestants will be eliminated tonight from online live voting only.

https://dwtsvote-live.abc.go.com/

After the first show ends phone, abc.com and facebook voting will open up and will help determine next week's elimination (from the 8 remaining contestants).

I will be doing my online voting for Mirai during East Coast show time (5 pm here Pacific Time). Since it is tape-delayed in the West, I and any other West Coast viewers will have to vote blind without seeing the performances or by catching an East Coast feed online.

FYI: There's now a DWTS thread for specifically discussing DWTS (as opposed to all things Tonya) that contains voting info etc.

ETA: OMG just read the FSonline interview and Mirai's (and Adam's) schedule is
Nagasu and Rippon will join their partners and the rest of the DWTS cast following Sunday’s Stars on Ice show in Chicago. They will take the red-eye flight out to Los Angeles. Because they are missing the cast rehearsal that takes place on Sunday for Monday’s live show, Nagasu and Rippon will begin preparations for the live show at 6 a.m. Monday. Nagasu says they need to learn the opening group number in addition to taking part in dress rehearsals and other preparations for the live show.
