Mirai got royally hosed. I was so upset I could not even come here until now. it was disgusting to have her gorgeous performance ruined. She does have so much left in her. In fact, I hope she does continue on the full quad, depending on how her body holds up. She does have so much more to give. Poor kid. She's a sensitive soul.
She should have been higher than Daleman (whose messy program somehow scored higher than Mirai's) and Loena Hendrix (no 3-3), at least. In fact, I think Mirai's score should have been at least 10 points higher, which would have put her right behind Bradie and given the US its 3 spots.
It's no secret there has always been political shenanigans in skating, and when you’ve hit rock bottom like some would say Mirai did before finding her way back, it takes time to recover from the lost reputation which when in play is terribly abused in this sport, and a bad habit.
It takes time for the figure skating community, namely the skater’s federation, in Mirai’s case, USFS, the judges, tech panel, (domestic and international), etc. to take another look and then to
fairly reward that skater an appropriate score
if the skate warrants it. Sometimes, it never happens, or occasionally we’ll witness it in small, random doses.
Regarding Mirai, she’s had difficulty getting back into the good graces of the skating community, but then again, she’s had brief moments of great reward for what she has brought to the competitive ice. It has really been a catch-22 for her.
It remains a problem of scores being too high (score inflation) for the skating content, or too low.
The judging continues to be more of a popularity contest than a fair and accurate assessment of what the skater has actually delivered (or not) on the ice.
JMHO.
