Michelle Kwan- This Time Around

She skated that program in COI as well, IIRC. I would guess it’s Lori’s choreography still at that point.

In certain performancess she would do a deathdrop to end, in other performances she would hold that spiral til the very end. Like a dream.

I remember that this routine was sort of maligned at the time because people were getting bored of Kwan's exhibitions skating to what they called "generic female ballads". I think it all started this season when she started with that Sumi Jo song "Beautiful World" and this routine sort of got lost in that criticism.

Beautiful World was kind of boring. It even lost to Josie Chouinard in some pro-am.

I rewatched beautiful world. Yeah pretty boring. Her relatively slow skating was kind of emphasized.

That program never "bored" me.
Her speed matched the tempo of the music, IMO.

The lyrics were meaningful, as well.

I think that even for slow music a skater can still have a good basic skating speed. Slow music does not mean the skating has to be slooow, IMO.

I was fortunate to watch MK perform, live, several times.
I would never say her skating was slow.

Not as "breakneck" quick as some, perhaps...

I never believed in skating fast for the sake of speed. Carolina Kostner as a young skater did often do that and could not control her jumps, etc. That being said, I always was able to lose myself in Michelle's skating.

Um... relative to her peers, she was slow at various times in her career.

I mean compared to Hubert, everybody was slow. She skated around those warm-ups and practices like that Ludacris song, "move bitch, get out the way, bitch, get out the way." And yet, ain't nobody saying Hubert got the best basics.

I think saying she didn't have the breakneck speed of some, especially Euro, skaters isn't the same as saying she was slow. I mean saying she doesn't have "good basic skating speed"? What the eff ever. Relative to others she's slow, relative to others she was f*cking fast. Relativity works out funny that way.

And Hubert was not her peer.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, "Beautiful World" was boring all-around. I could not watch that program more than once every two-to-five years if I watch it at all. I think that came out the same season or so of Bourne/Kraatz and then Surya Bonaly's "March with Me" and I remember fans screaming "make it stop." I wonder what would have happened if Yuka debuted "Hat Full of Stars" then.
