A lot of time spent backing into jumps and not a lot of time spent gliding out of jumps in this program.

Oh yeah, the red was there all along. I see it now in the replays.

So the powerful bombastic part of the music at the end works really well to give him a big finish. But before that, he's putting less emotion and interpretation into it than he did into Succession.

Did he cut himself, or do a costume change? I'm now seeing red on the shirt where I didn't before. Another dramatik ending.
Yeah, I didn't see the red on the collar at the start of the program - I'm not sure if it was there all along and we just never got a good camera angle of it to start or if there's some sort of lame costume "change" midway through the program that reveals the bloody collar.

And Ilia wins again by a mile!!! 312+ pts. Over 20 pts above Yuma, overall.

I love Ilia, but this new FS feels like a step backwards after last year’s? Not sure how the score reflects what he put out on the ice. Winning PCS over Yuma feels a bit silly.

He didn't put much emotion & interpretation into Succession early last season either. The bones were there for a good program, and I think the bones are there for a good program with Vampire. We'll have to see how it develops. I need to re-watch to have a better idea of what I think of it overall, but the powerful, bombastic parts of the music in the last minute or so are really good - that raspberry out of nowhere was astounding.

Also I'll say that I thought Succession came across way better in-person (at skam anyway) than it ever did on screen. Ilia has a natural charisma that sometimes doesn't translate as well on camera.

Let me clarify, I wasn't knocking the Succession program. I really liked it. :) What I meant was, I thought it worked better for him and he did more with it than this one, at least so far.

Ilia clearly loves to backflip, but I question including it in his competitive programs. There's not much upside scoring-wise and too much could go wrong.
Well, the judges seem to like it just fine, lol. He got a +1.8 GOE on his choreo sequence where the backflip happens. Meanwhile, Yuma got a +1.7 GOE for his choreo sequence. That's something for everyone to chew on.

Mind, Yuma DID get +1.64 GOE on his step sequence while Ilia only got +1.25 GOE, so Yuma comes out on top for GOE on those elements combined.

Looks like the (eventual) 4A is planned to be the 2nd jump, not the first.

Good for Ilia for landing the 4F in both programs here after not doing it last season.
Yes, I would agree - that does seem to be the eventual planned layout. The 4F is definitely a priority for him this season. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 3F+3A seq upgraded to a 4F+3A seq by the end of the season either. And I expect the 3Lz+1Eu+3S to be upgraded to 4Lz+1Eu+3S by season's end also. I do wonder if he's eventually going to try and play with adding the 4Lo somewhere so that he can get all 6 quads completed in one program.

LOL - I wanna know what Judge 4 was thinking in only giving a -3 GOE instead of a -5 GOE for his choreo sequence - that's where the tech panel counted the death drop fall, rather than on his spin - generous tech panel there, lol. But, still, Judge 4 was also generous there because the rest of the panel correctly gave it the -5 GOE it deserved, lol.

Haven't watched, but was initially surprised that Malinin was 12-1/2 points ahead despite Kagiyama matching his four quads (with each having an error on one).

Malinin's base value on quad passes was 47.27, compared to Kagiyama's 45.45. Just a 1.82 difference. Factoring in GOE, 51.87 v. 50.47, an even smaller difference of 1.4. So it wasn't the quads.

So where did Malinin rack up points? Primarily on triple jump combos. Malinin had 26.4 base value / 29.61 with GOE on his two triple combo passes v. Kagiyama's 18.56 base value / 20.9 with GOE. Kagiyama probably intended to do 3F+3T, so he left 3+ points on the table. He could also put the 2A after the second 3A to get a bonus on it, but he's still going to come up short.

Of course, Malinin presumably intends that 3Lz to be a 4Lz later in the season.

I wonder if the ISU will relax the "only one quad can be repeated" rule. It was initially intended to stop the likes of Nathan Chen or Ilia Malinin from running away with things. Now that Malinin is filling damn near every box with a quad, the rule may help him. Kagiyama could probably closer if he were able to repeat both 4S and 4T.

Personally, I thought Yuma's program was a bit boring until the last minute, and not even his step sequence was enough to truly save it for me by the end. Loved Ilia's theatricality, and I think it's a great program for him. A backflip that actually works well with the music. He's bringing a different style to figure skating, which this sport absolutely needs. Shun had the best programs of the whole competition, and I would have ranked him ahead of Yuma both segments.

The 3Lz sequence could definitely be upgraded to 4Lz, and if he wants to show off all his quads, he could replace the solo 4Lz with 4Lo. But to end the program on a 4F+3A?? I might actually fall to my knees if I see that in real life.

I doubt he would replace the 4Lz with a 4Lo since he would be giving up points. The only benefit he would get by adding 4Lo is if he substituted it for the 4S or 4T.

Since he can only repeat 1 quad, I assume he'll repeat the 4Lz to maximize the points.

It's absolutely nuts that we're talking about sacrificing maybe 1 or 2 points when he'd be, theoretically, going for 7 quads, plus another 2 triples in the FS if he was intent on landing all 6 different quads in one program.
