So much for "go woke, go broke"
Barbie is considered a 'woke' film because it is considered anti-men, and anti-relationship.EH? Was it actually at all what some call “woke”? Not to get into the politics here too much, but I guess there are those who have gone to thinking that “woke” now just means “whatever bothers them” or “offends them” - even if it’s just one centimeter to the left of where they think being “correctly conservative” means.
There are things I would characterize as “go woke, go broke”, but all those things emphasized “making the point” over literally everything else and the quality ended up being just awful.
I thought that Barbie did a pretty job at satire and if the movie itself was garbage, the ticket sales would have deflated after the first two weeks. No way would it have done $1.4B.
IMHO, Barbie is probably going to get a Best Picture Oscar nom (Either Oppenheimer or Killers of the Flower Moon will probably win) and should absolutely win Oscars for Production Design and Costume Design.
If you don't think it's a thing, I suggest going to YouTube and searching for "Barbie" and "woke". And tell me if the one called "Barbie is the Most Delusional, Hateful, Woke Film I've Ever Seen" is as hysterical as I think it must be.EH? Was it actually at all what some call “woke”?
Since it is neither anti-men nor anti-relationship, I guess it's not "woke"Barbie is considered a 'woke' film because it is considered anti-men, and anti-relationship.
Being “woke” doesn’t mean anti-men or anti-relationship.Since it is neither anti-men nor anti-relationship, I guess it's not "woke"
Ooooooooooof course he did...And Ben Shapiro went on a 43-minute rant about the movie and started his rant off by burning a Barbie.
It is if you listen to any conservative commentary on the film.Since it is neither anti-men nor anti-relationship, I guess it's not "woke"
I know that's why I put woke in quotation marksBeing “woke” doesn’t mean anti-men or anti-relationship.
U.S. Domestic Weekend 52
Wonka is back on top. Aquaman looks like it will break even - barely - with international sales. The Color Purple is tanking.
2023 Worldwide Box Office
Barbie ($1.44B) was on top - followed by The Super Mario Bros ($1.36B). I knew Oppenheimer did well, but I didn’t realize it was just under $1B.

I watched the Iron Claw and it should be for men what Barbie is for women. Even if you know absolutely nothing about pro wrestling , the themes about complex family relationships, toxic masculinity, and finding meaning in life when your dreams are no longer attainable should resonate. The acting was superb - Efron continues his leading man renaissance while Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson continue their recent run of solid performances.
TCM is showing ice-skating-themed movies today. It's currently showing Silver Skates (1943), to be followed by Suspense (1946), The Hunted (1948), and Ice Castles (1978). The first three feature 1938 UK figure skating Olympian Belita. I just might watch Ice Castles to see my sweetie Robby.
I saw Boys in the Boat this week and thought it was fine. Just not great. My husband has read the book more recently than I have and was miffed that they changed some of the facts from the book, facts that were facts.
Yes. I don't particularly like bloody films but this was so over the top to be obviously fake. It was hilarious. Nick Cage being over the top and crazy at his best.Has anyone else seen Renfield? Nicholas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hault as his manservant who is having control issues with his master and joins a support group. Very enjoyable. However if you don't like lots of blood or a high body count this is not for you.
