So much for "go woke, go broke" ;)

EH? Was it actually at all what some call “woke”? Not to get into the politics here too much, but I guess there are those who have gone to thinking that “woke” now just means “whatever bothers them” or “offends them” - even if it’s just one centimeter to the left of where they think being “correctly conservative” means.

There are things I would characterize as “go woke, go broke”, but all those things emphasized “making the point” over literally everything else and the quality ended up being just awful.

I thought that Barbie did a pretty job at satire and if the movie itself was garbage, the ticket sales would have deflated after the first two weeks. No way would it have done $1.4B.

IMHO, Barbie is probably going to get a Best Picture Oscar nom (Either Oppenheimer or Killers of the Flower Moon will probably win) and should absolutely win Oscars for Production Design and Costume Design.

Barbie is considered a 'woke' film because it is considered anti-men, and anti-relationship.

And Ben Shapiro went on a 43-minute rant about the movie and started his rant off by burning a Barbie.

If you don't think it's a thing, I suggest going to YouTube and searching for "Barbie" and "woke". And tell me if the one called "Barbie is the Most Delusional, Hateful, Woke Film I've Ever Seen" is as hysterical as I think it must be.

It's considered "woke" because the conservative outrage mongers decided it was. It has nothing to do with reality. Which is why Buzz Lightyear and the Little Mermaid are also considered woke by these people. And they are the ones that scream "go woke, go broke" so it is their judgment that matters when counteracting that narrative.

Just saw Boys in the Boat. Likes: the built-in drama of depression era hardscrabble guys rowing to victory. Pretty cool cinematography of the rowing itself. But I could have done with less of the romance.

Finished Maestro. Likes: the performances (Bradley especially was fantastic in this), the actual music sequences, the scene where Mulligan sees her part in the breakdown of her marriage, beautiful cinematography. I have rewatched the Cathedral scene a gazillion times. I think it’d make great skating music.

Huhs: I don’t know much about Leonard Bernstein and still don’t (the music I got most out of from the movie involved Mahler), the movie was more about the marriage which didn’t seem that interesting to me.

All in all, a movie I admire more than love.

I watched Maestro on Netflix. When it ended, my husband looked at me and said, "That was messy". I agree. There was too much going on - the b/w & color changes, for example. Was that necessary? My favorite parts involved him and the orchestra. I wanted to see more of that, more of his musical story, so I don't agree that focusing on his marriage was the best way to go. I felt cheated that I didn't get more of the other story. We both felt that Cooper's accent wavered enough that it became annoying.

I watched the Iron Claw and it should be for men what Barbie is for women. Even if you know absolutely nothing about pro wrestling , the themes about complex family relationships, toxic masculinity, and finding meaning in life when your dreams are no longer attainable should resonate. The acting was superb - Efron continues his leading man renaissance while Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson continue their recent run of solid performances.

U.S. Domestic Weekend 52

Wonka is back on top. Aquaman looks like it will break even - barely - with international sales. The Color Purple is tanking.

2023 Worldwide Box Office

Barbie ($1.44B) was on top - followed by The Super Mario Bros ($1.36B). I knew Oppenheimer did well, but I didn’t realize it was just under $1B.

"Barbenheimer" really was a thing for a while. People went to see both movies back to back. IMO that's the reason why they both ended up being top 3, because Oppenheimer wasn't really a typical Hollywood blockbuster.

$44M in a week (domestically) for "The Color Purple" isn't what I'd consider "tanking." We'll see how it fares with the guild/SAG/BAFTA/Oscar nominations. It could potentially have okay legs and decent European returns. It may not make money, but it doesn't portend to be a gigantic flop either. "Killers of the Flower Moon" is another awards contender that's stumbled far worse with its production budget alone exceeding $200M and barely $67M gross (domestic) in 11 weeks.

Being “woke” doesn’t mean anti-men or anti-relationship.

True according to the original definition, but the conservatives have appropriated it and use it to basically mean anything they don't like.

Agreed. I was really moved by it and thought it was quite powerful and tough to watch.

TCM is showing ice-skating-themed movies today. It's currently showing Silver Skates (1943), to be followed by Suspense (1946), The Hunted (1948), and Ice Castles (1978). The first three feature 1938 UK figure skating Olympian Belita. I just might watch Ice Castles to see my sweetie Robby. :)

I saw Boys in the Boat this week and thought it was fine. Just not great. My husband has read the book more recently than I have and was miffed that they changed some of the facts from the book, facts that were facts.

"Save Yourselves!" is a pretty funny movie with a weird alien twist. It's about this couple from Brooklyn who go off-grid in a cabin to take a break from their phones and the internet. But while they're trying to chill, these fluffy alien things start attacking Earth. The movie is kind of goofy and has some really funny parts, especially when the couple is just trying to figure out what's going on. The actors are cool and make the whole crazy situation seem kinda real. It's not like a big-budget alien movie with tons of special effects; it's more laid-back and focuses more on the couple than the aliens. If you're up for a comedy that's a bit different and don’t mind some sci-fi stuff, you might like it. It's good for a laugh and doesn't take itself too seriously.

I really liked Good Grief. Written, directed and starring Dan Levy, about a man who lost his husband and his two friends who rally around. They mark the one year after the death by going on a trip to Paris. Some interesting takes on grief (the father’s eulogy was so beautiful) and the cast is fun. And both modern-day London and Paris are shot beautifully.

A little too much wish fulfillment. The ending does not land as well as it should. It just ends.

I love these types of movies. Adult but comforting.

Has anyone else seen Renfield? Nicholas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hault as his manservant who is having control issues with his master and joins a support group. Very enjoyable. However if you don't like lots of blood or a high body count this is not for you.

Yes. I don't particularly like bloody films but this was so over the top to be obviously fake. It was hilarious. Nick Cage being over the top and crazy at his best.

Da’Vine Joy Rudolph just won the Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe for The Holdovers. I’m pleasantly shocked. She was great, but I thought Emily Blunt was going to win for Oppenheimer.

Robert Downey, Jr. won Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe for Oppenheimer.

Shall we do a separate thread for the award show season for movies?

Anatomy of a Fall has won the Non English Language Motion Picture Golden Globe. 🇫🇷 Anatomy of a Fall, surprisingly, has also won Best Screenplay.

I thought Past Lives was going to win. I’ll check this other movie out.

Emma Stone has won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Comedy/Musical for Poor Things. I thought either she or Margot Robbie (Barbie) would win.

Cillian Murphy has won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actor in a Drama for Oppenheimer. Not surprised.
