I'm impressed at the extent of the overlap in Team Japan with the GPF: for women, 2/3 are in the GPF and the third is first alternate, while on the men's side, Sato is in the GPF (and Yamamoto is, but just a Universiade alternate*) - and of course Kagiyama was unable to compete in the GP. Most of the Japanese skaters seem to manage to combine university with skating - and we do hear about a lot of them graduating. Also Japan seems to take Universiade more seriously for skaters who are internationally competitive than at least the North American federations.

*ETA - as is Watanabe for the women

Thanks for cross-posting the press release link here - I was very glad to see a focus on Ting Cui and esecially Nathan Chapple (what a great story!) in the article. :)

Re-posting the Team Italy figure skaters here:
Team for Lake Placid FISU World University Winter Games
Nikolaj Memola
Lara Naki Gutmann
Leia Dozzi/Pietro Papetti
ETA that an English version includes a photo of Memola in his victory lap in Torino after he won the JGP Final men's gold:
On the ice of Lake Placid, we will see also Nikolaj Memola (in the cover photo made by Diego Barbieri/FISG), big star last weekend with its historic success in the junior final of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final, an event of which Torino 2025 was Main National Partner and in which the launch of the Ambassador campaign was announced.

Ekaterina Kurakova will represent Poland:

ETA: Europeans in Espoo is Jan. 23-29, 2023, the same week as U.S. Nationals in San Jose, CA.

12 Dec. 2022 was the deadline for the individual entries by name via the National University Sports Federations.

I'm pretty sure I saw something on one of the IG stories of Nauryzova/Datiev that had a countdown for World University Games that made me think they would be competing - but no official announcement from their federation yet.

It would be nice if the official website had the full list of athletes since the deadline was this past Monday.

30 men, 30 women, 25 dance teams.

So far, we have 9 men, 9 women and 4 dance teams confirmed!

…..

That’s going to be a lot of fun with Peacock. Due to different time zones, there’ll be minimal or no overlap of time.

From the OES news thread - Eva-Lotta Kiibus will be representing Estonia!
Eva-Lotta Kiibus' message today: https://www.instagram.com/p/CmPlEyWLjD6/
This year I am not competing at Estonian Nationals. It wasn’t an easy move, but It is a very much needed move for my health.
I have struggled with injuries that keep coming back and because of that my mental state and form is just not ready to go.
Not to make the same mistakes like last year, a step back had to be made. I have strong and most importantly, a smart team behind my back❤️And with their help, I give my best and all my passion to get the best whats left in this season💪
@thomas.kennes
My next competitions are Winter Universiade 2023 and most importantly Europeans❤️

I think it has more to do with when the countries’ national championships are. Japan’s is this month, meaning that a mid-January comp is a nice filler until 4CCs and Worlds, while Canada Nationals is the same week and US Nationals are just a week after this competition.

"Emily Saari [new Austrian women's champion] and Luc Maierhofer [men's silver medalist] will represent Austria at the Winter World University Games (Winter Universiade) from January 12 to 22 in Lake Placid, USA."
Source: https://skateaustria.at/news/oesterr-meisterschaften-2022-23-die-ergebnisse

ETA on Dec. 19 - Shaline Rüegger will end her figure skating international career in Lake Placid before debuting as a short track speed skater there!
Shaline Rüegger, Nurullah Sahaka, Micha Steffen for Switzerland
Relevant snippet from Swiss Ice Skating's Nationals recap published on Dec. 19:
... 5th place of Shaline Rüegger (EC Zürich-Oerlikon) for her last Swiss Championship in Figure Skating... before starting in Short Track as part of a successful "transfer of talent" within Swiss Ice Skating: she will soon participate in the World University Games Lake Placid 2023 for its last international competition in Figure Skating and the week after, at the same place and same event, for its first in Speed Skating!

This is shaping up to be one sad dance event, unless there are a lot more dance teams yet to be announced.

I am so happy to learn about all of this. South Korea hosted the summer of 2015 and the organization asked the Jayhawks to be the US team there. The South Koreans were wonderful hosts. Some of those basketball games were tight. The gold medal game went to OT and they won and piled on top of each other with pure joy. I am a believer in these games.

And it looks like Dupayage/Nabais will be representing France! Hopefully they're not the only French team in Lake Placid!
