South Korea held a selection competition (of course ) for the Winter Universiade in July - re-posting from the Korean news thread:

The figure skating competition at the Winter Universiade is scheduled for January 13-15, 2023 in Lake Placid.

For those who don't already know this, USFS published selection criteria that includes NQS scores earlier this summer:

From the "SCHEDULE OF EVENTS (Preliminary)" at the end of the Announcement, figure skating official practices begin on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 and an Exhibition is scheduled for Monday, January 16.

I'm impressed at the extent of the overlap in Team Japan with the GPF: for women, 2/3 are in the GPF and the third is first alternate, while on the men's side, Sato is in the GPF (and Yamamoto is, but just a Universiade alternate*) - and of course Kagiyama was unable to compete in the GP. Most of the Japanese skaters seem to manage to combine university with skating - and we do hear about a lot of them graduating. Also Japan seems to take Universiade more seriously for skaters who are internationally competitive than at least the North American federations.

*ETA - as is Watanabe for the women

I'm pretty sure I saw something on one of the IG stories of Nauryzova/Datiev that had a countdown for World University Games that made me think they would be competing - but no official announcement from their federation yet.

It would be nice if the official website had the full list of athletes since the deadline was this past Monday.

30 men, 30 women, 25 dance teams.

So far, we have 9 men, 9 women and 4 dance teams confirmed!

I think it has more to do with when the countries’ national championships are. Japan’s is this month, meaning that a mid-January comp is a nice filler until 4CCs and Worlds, while Canada Nationals is the same week and US Nationals are just a week after this competition.

I am so happy to learn about all of this. South Korea hosted the summer of 2015 and the organization asked the Jayhawks to be the US team there. The South Koreans were wonderful hosts. Some of those basketball games were tight. The gold medal game went to OT and they won and piled on top of each other with pure joy. I am a believer in these games.
