For those in the US, ESPN has posted their broadcast schedule and there is no skating included. When asked in the comments, the FISU account responded that skating will be available on ESPN+ and the FISU.tv website.

Why does ESPN+ coverage cost $9.99/mo, yet watching on FISU.tv is free? One is live…or both live but FISU has ads…or something else?

I assume a VPN will be needed to watch FISU.tv's stream in the USA?
It doesn't say anything about geo restrictions on its website but that's a good guess. Will use my Opera browser. You do have to create an account and login but it's free. (Hope the account isn't used for geo-identifying purposes.)

According to this article, "the games will be shown on the ESPN+ streaming service as well as ESPN2 and ESPNU on TV in the United States, TSN in Canada, and Eurosport in various European countries. Figure skating competitions at the 2023 Winter World University Games will also be live-streamed on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com, although this will not be available in the United States or Canada (other territorial restrictions may also apply)."

I checked the ESPN and ESPN2 schedule today and did not find any listings for FISA games. ESPN U showed times of 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on January 13 but doesn't indicate what sport is being covered. ESPN+ showed all of the figure skating events beginning on January 13 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rhythm Dance and ending on January with the Exhibition which is scheduled 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

It has been years since I've had cable but friends tell me they can still look out on their online cable guide for 2 to 3 weeks so it seems if ESPN or ESPN2 was showing any of the events they would be on the cable guide by now.

So the “free” FISU.TV costs in the USA (and Japan?) are geoblocked. So we get to pay $9.99/mo for ESPN+? Umm…heck no. Peacock and COMCAST are enough costs. I’ll wait for Nationals & Euros.

No VPN. The fewer machines, wires, etc in my life, the better.

Now we know why $ome countrie$ are promoting these college games more strongly than others. 😉

Looks like ESPNU will broadcast Alpine Skiing and Snowboard on January 13: https://www.facebook.com/LakePlacid2023/photos/pcb.1623743858055920/1623743838055922/

ETA: BTW, I haven't created a competition thread for the WUG figure skating competition yet - am waiting for the full entries to be published online. The last time this comp. was held in Krasnoyarsk in March 2019, the entries/starting order didn't show up online until the day before!

Where did you see that FISU.TV is geoblocked? I hadn't noticed that when I signed up.

I signed up too…so can see everything else. However, the fact that US viewers need to pay for ESPN+ tells me that “free FISU” will be geoblocked in countries with paid services. Or…those with VPNs can get around. I’m not interested.

Hmmm... I thought the max for the Men & Women was 30, like the Olympics. I must have misread it or it was updated to increase the men & women's maximums.

Entry list updated on official website

Men:
Ivan SHMURATKO and Azizmurod SHABAZOV (Ukzbekistan) added. Various previously announced skaters missing from when the LakePlacid2023 result mini-site was launched are now present.
Compared to announcement, Callum Bradshaw is still missing

Women: Niginabonu JAMOLIDDINOVA (Ukzbekistan) is added. Still missing Siwon Lee

Ice Dance: still a mess. I think they are missing all 2nd and 3rd entries for countries with multiple entries.

Based on info/links in my tweet, I've created the competition thread in Kiss & Cry (32 men, 35 women, 13 ice dance teams):

ETA:

Lake Placid's Golden Arrow hotel posted a clip of the American Ice Theatre group rehearsing on a frozen Mirror Lake for Thursday evening's opening ceremony: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CnSaYHkhbhG/
American Ice Theatre's group photo on Olympic Center ice: https://www.instagram.com/p/CnP1a05vobU/

Re-posting here (VPN required to watch in USA?):
I refreshed the page several times and only then did it work.
I'm watching here
Parade of Nations is happening now and figure skater volunteers are pulling sleds with the countries' names on them and hopefully none of the athletes will slip and hurt themselves while walking across the ice!!
