Keeping Track of Criminal Cases & SafeSport Suspensions in Skating

Thank you for this. We do very much need legal counsel - I need to figure out what kind. The Rink, the Skating Director, a prominent coach, the club parents and skaters - no one believed us. The local Police dept even had kids in the club and seemed unlikely to believe us at the time and we were reeling in panic for quite a while. These people all absolutely adore the perpetrator.

The perpetrator now tours the world on USFSA's dime and enjoys fame and adulation (and access to people of all ages over whom they have a power differential).

Our skater lost their close knit community and left the sport entirely and is likely emotionally traumatized for life - even with extensive ongoing therapy. They are also as of recently a legal adult and have the most say in our next steps forward if any.

I know I will personally have regrets for the rest of my life for any steps we have and have not taken. It is so very difficult.

I will say it feels nice to at least say these things out loud and feel heard.
I think one reason I'm posting is that I want people to know that this scourge is ongoing in skating and to please stay vigilant.

I don't think this has been posted yet, but Luke Munana (former intl ice dancer for Mexico) was temporarily suspended as of Oct 2, for allegations of misconduct. He coaches in Brentwood, California.

Are you sure that Luke Munana coaches in Brentwood, CA? There is no rink in Brentwood. There is a Luke Munana who is in construction and lives/works in Brentwood, CA. Maybe the same person, but I would verify before posting. JMHO.
There are no rinks in either Brentwood, CA: the city near San Francisco or the area of Los Angeles. I would assume Brentwood is his home city and he coaches nearby? Maybe Stockton, Livermore, or Vacaville if Bay Area Brentwood or Pickwick or Northridge if LA Brentwood?

First let me say how sorry I am that this happened to your skater. In terms of lawyers, it somewhat depends on what you want to do, are you interested in a civil suit against the rink or the abuser or someone to just shepherd you through the criminal process? Sadly, there are now lawyers who specialize in representing abuse victims, google and see if there is one in your area. Another good resource is your local or state bar association. Most have lawyer referral services and can direct you to someone with the right specialty. Another place to check is advocacy organizations for abuse victims who also may have lists of lawyers who can help. Best of luck to all of you!

He lives in the Bay Area. Stockton is the closest rink to him followed by Livermore. I have no idea where he coaches but he's not listed on the Vacaville Ice Sports website as a coach. Stockton and Livermore don't list their coaches on their website. 🤷‍♂️

There’s Dublin and Oakland ice. Further out is Fremont, San Jose, San Mateo, and San Francisco if he’s willing to drive.

I skate regularly at Dublin and I haven’t seen him there.

I have no advice, but I wanted to tell you and your skater how sorry I am for you/them.

I'm glad you are pursuing all avenues.

According to his Facebook, he lives in Orlando now and teaches at Orlando Ice Den. 🤷 Last I heard he was up here in this area but I don't keep up with him, only his sister Laura.

Considering there is video evidence of a gang rape that was carried out at the World Junior Hockey Championship by members of Team Canada that happened on Canadian soil a few years back and nothing has come from the investigation, I fear this victim is in for a rough time. :(

Christine gave way too much detail that's just going to invite speculation who the accuser is.
I sort of agree and disagree. It is a lot of detail, but also isn't it just from the report that other people can get access to as well? Idk, I just hope people can control themselves and not speculate on the identity of the victim.

Canadian Nationals starts on the 8th so should be competing in about a week from now.

I imagine that they will WD?
LOL - no way are they going to WD. That would be interpreted as a tacit admission of guilt.

They might lose to LajLag, but then again, I could see some judges/officials propping them up as a way of "showing support." Best guess - they retire at the end of the season.

Regardless I think they’ve been planning to retire this season anyway so it’s honestly not much of a loss for them (unfortunately)

Hockey Canada did complete an investigation last year; its conclusions are currently under appeal by some of the players involved so the results aren’t known yet.

Doesn’t a lot of this depend on how the investigations conclude? He hasn’t even been suspended yet.
