Perhaps, but I imagine the one issue dwarfed all the other issues. Health issues tend to do that. Especially when they're as serious as anorexia.
That's for sure. I mean, personality is one thing. A life-threatening health condition is another. Especially given the nature of eating disorders. They don't just "happen"... Pressure, lack of compassion, lack of support, carelessness of adults in Yulia's life, etc. Horribly sad situation all around.

Evgeni Plushenko's message to Yulia:-

The youngest figure skater to win a Gold Medal at the Olympics under modern rules! At 15 years she, together with our team won gold for Russia and brought our team 20 points out of the 20 possible! A great athlete, who did not quit after the Olympics in 2014, but continued her sports career, struggled, overcoming traumas and psychological barriers! Yulia, life goes on, you are a good girl, and a hard worker. You are a little legend that brought female Russian figure skating to the highest level after a long period without success! I'm proud of you and will always be there for you!

Apparently, Burger King have made an offer.....!

A large network of fast food restaurants "Burger King" have offered work to Yulia Lipnitskaya.

"Dear Yulia! We invite you to work in the position of director for "Chicken fillets" in "Burger King".

The company is confident that you are the most suited to the values of the new dietary chicken burger.

The duties include organising promotional events, including within figure skating. Also, helping with the management of funds to combat anorexia and obesity, "- says the letter

For real? Certainly surreal

Why the hell would Julia want to promote such unhealthy fast food? "Please overcome eating disorders and eat our unhealthy deep fried chicken like a true athletic champion!". :cheer: she is so much better than Burger King I mean what? if she gets free milkshakes then maybe do it part-time.

Also does the promotional events within figure skating mean that soon we'll see "Burger King on Ice"? talk about Irina Slutskaya's worst nightmare! :scream:

Plushenko always rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't like his style. He came off as arrogant in his interviews. I was annoyed by his "unreasonable" longevity. I hated his programs. Now I realize what a gem this guy is. Wish I understood what sort of a person he was years ago. I would have seen his skating and his career from a different perspective. Because at the end of a day, it's all about the skater's charisma.

I agree with this. I was never a Plushenko fan either but it's so nice to see him coming to Julia's defense. He gets it. Being a popular athlete in Russia cannot be easy.

I'm sad to hear of Julia's struggles and hope she finds health and happiness. I'll always remember her Olympic performances with fondness.

I suspect it's not true as, as far as I know, BK doesn't have such a position.
Do they even have such a meal? Yes? No? I wouldn't know before reading this piece of `news'.
Again, this is how Lipnitskaya's name is used in the Russian press. And note, that she, so far, hadnt said a word. It's pretty much like with her `switching to pairs' - she never said a word about it. As long as she is a news maker the Russian rpess will blow out of any proportion anything with her name. Even the article named `Lipnitskaya is not saying 2+2=8' would get `clicks' `hits' and `likes', which is, of course, a good thing if your paper is 99% ads.

I looked up the BK nutritional chart after seeing that the picture of the fillet sandwich shows fried.

:scream:

Google shows that they have had grilled chicken occasionally, but by the time you add in the bun, sauce, and sodium to those...

Deputy Prime Minister, and Former Minister of Sport, Vitaly Mutko: "We need to respect the decisions that were taken by Lipnitskaya and Sotnikova." Reads:-

[MutKo states:] "There should not be any negativity. We just need to thank the skaters who provided us with some wonderful memories and became Olympic champions at their home games. Everyone has their own life, their own perspective, their own problems, and it's not necessary to talk about it to the whole world. Sometimes these problems are related to health, and your under no obligation to reveal everything. Such decisions are their own to make. Both skaters are winners, and very determined. If there are problems which prevent them from performing at their best, then they are entitled not to compete. It is always sad when such outstanding athletes, vibrant personalities, leave the sport. I hope that they will remain in the sport in some capacity, and that everything works out for them. I am very grateful to them. Any decision they make must be respected and supported. In any case, I respect them and will support them should they require it."

This is an accurate headline by Reuters at least: Figure skating: Russian Olympic gold medalist Lipnitskaya retires - reports

Re. Sotnikova:
The news about Lipnitskaya came a day after the coach of reigning Olympic champion Adelina Sotnikova said she would miss the rest of the season and not defend her title at the Pyeongchang Games in South Korea due to injury.

Sotnikova’s coach, twice Olympic gold medalist Yevgeny Plushenko, told R-Sport news agency that her absence from next year’s Games should not be viewed as her retirement.

Did Sotnikova actually retire?

In relation to Sotnikova, he is referring to her decision to take a year out due to injury, which means that she won't defend her title. In relation to Lipnitskaya, he is referring to her retirement.

Nevertheless, some doubt that Sotnikova will ever return, although the official line is that her decision to take a year out is not a retirement. My view for quite a while now is that it is highly unlikely that Sotnikova will ever return, and if that turns out not to be the case, then I will believe it only when I see it.

Despite the fact that each skaters situation is different, Mutko has conflated his comments into one, which can often be confusing

Thanks for the explanation Maofan7. I did not think Sotnikova had retired. I also never thought she would compete again. I just wondered if it was "official".

As a side note, I think the days of seeing skaters win double OGM is gone. There is really no reason to carry on when you have reached the pinnacle. And, the toll it takes on skaters bodies is so much greater than in say, Witt's time. Kim Yu-na came closest....but she had taken a huge chunk of time off.

part of Ade

"What about Adeline Sotnikova?"

- Two months ago, Adeline was injured, and the doctors misdiagnosed, which complicated the situation. She suffered a tear ligament and fracture of a small stone in the foot. Continue playing sports this season, we do not see the point, and powder the brains and fool people unfairly, so they decided to skip the season. It is necessary to fully recover.

Yesterday, MRI photos went to Germany, waiting for a response from the doctors on the results of their viewing. The other day Adeline herself flies there and will be treated, because here, in Russia, unfortunately, did not work.

- How have the plans changed because of Sotnikova's injury?

- She moved from one coach to another, and I would like to prove that Adeline is a strong athlete. Prove this work, but because of the injury, unfortunately, this did not happen yet to do. Of course, what happened is a big loss for figure skating, because she is a great athlete, our first Olympic champion in women's singles. But life does not stop there, we need to move on, it is set up for this.

the part of Yulia:

- What do you think about Yulia Lipnitskaya in connection with the latest news about the completion of her career?

- I know that she had health problems and very serious. I know that a whole team of specialists worked there. In my opinion, in the person of Julia figure skating lost a very serious athlete, who at the age of 15 won the Olympics in Sochi. It seemed to me that she coped with the excitement and difficulties in health.

I think that the point has not been set. At 19, if you work with doctors, ours or foreign, you can go back, because at this age you still need to ride. Let's wait a little - maybe she will return to the sport and will please her fans. But this decision should be made by the sportswoman herself.

- Would you consider the possibility of cooperation with Lipnitskaya?

- You know, when Adeline came to me, I was accused of luring her, but in fact, I never lured anyone. As for Julia, I would be interested, I'm a young coach, and these are great athletes, talented people - and Adeline, and Julia. But first you need to cure all the sores, this is exactly what will happen now with Adeline, when I will spend my money and money sponsors. This is what Yule needs to do-first to conduct a survey, and if she decides to return, then the doors in my academy are open.

Double OGMs in skating have always been rare. I think there are more people going for it these days than in Witt's day because there are fewer avenues open to pros to make a lot of money with the collapse of the Pro circuit and so many shows going out of business. At least in North America anyway.

This is not how it was supposed to be. )=

However, little Yúliya on her very first senior season took an Olympic Gold Medal, a World Silver Medal and stole the attention (and heart) of the whole wide world as the girl in the red coat.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: "Malnutrition was detrimental to Lipnitskaya's health"

Anorexia, as a rule, is not the choice of the athlete themself, but the influence of the coach, who can make them lose weight. All this leads to a psychological illness, when the skater is afraid to recover extra weight. A normal person will never have a desire to eat nothing. As for Yulia, her illness did not develop as a result of pressure from the coach, but due to attempts to restore her former form by any means. As a result, malnutrition adversely affected her health. Of course, I faced such problems. When you have a problem on the ice, then the coach should tell you about it. I've had no undue pressure from coaches. I myself understood that I had to put myself in order, although sometimes it was very difficult to return to form."

Why didn't her coach prevented her from eating cellulosa? :(

Obviously, if you're an ATHLETE, you must develop a competitive inclination. And... you must be... "obsessed" by your goal. :( STILL... when does it start turning into self destruction? :(

I'm pretty sure Virtue & Moir and Hanyu have other plans.

As likely do Pap/Ciz, the Shibs, Hub/Don, Weav/Po, Chock/Bates, and a slew of other ice dancers, and in the men's division: Javi Fernandez, Nathan Chen, Patrick Chan, Shoma Uno, and a slew of others... :D Ice is slippery, and anything can and does happen in figure skating.

There's this bit of wisdom too about not counting chickens before they're hatched. :COP:
