ISU signs deal with Infront; Will EuroSport & CBC still cover ISU events this season?

Can anyone provide a link to the Russian Channel 1 please? I will buy a VPN service, I have used Windscribe before and it was fine.
I assume on Channel 1 you can only watch live? I loved Eurosport player as you could also watch later.

Look for ФИГУРНОЕ КАТАНИЕ figure skating, ГРАН-ПРИ Grand Prix, ПРЯМОЙ ЭФИР live. They have a lot of videos also. You can still watch the test skates so I presume there can be on-demand also.

I'm sure I'll find streams, but my 70-something mother (who got me into watching skating!) won't, she only watches what Eurosport puts on the TV channel.

Ugh, do I gotta go round to her house to set up stuff she can manage? I need her to keep up, because skating is the only non-upsetting conversation topic we can share, these days!

I read somewhere, that Eurosport is working on a deal with Infront for next season. Apparently, Infront wants a lot of money.

Greed will never end... :(

Eurosport broadcasters are some of the best, if not the best in the world bringing us engaging and intelligent figure skating coverage. But it's never about what's good for the sport, the skaters and the fans.

And if they're trying to get a lot of money from CBC it will almost certainly mean there will be no skating coverage in Canada :(
Well done ISU!
Well Skate Ontario has announced going into partnership with CBC which will be providing full live stream coverage of Octoberfest (a sectional series event) which takes place at the same time as Skate America :( [This will be in place of the Dailymotion stream Skate Ontario has provided for the previous sectional series events.]

I think this must mean pretty much that there will be no CBC coverage of skating this year :(
So sad. And ridiculous!

I agree with you ... on all counts. So, I guess I'm going to have to venture into VPN service, if I want to watch anything.

Now, since I will be a complete "newbie" to VPN service, do I need to purchase a VPN that has servers in Russia in order to watch Channel 1? Or ... do I just have to set my VPN to a country where Russia Channel 1 is not geo-blocked? And, if that's the case, how do I know which countries it isn't blocked in?

I haven't had time on this Thanksgiving weekend in Canada to do much more than an extremely BRIEF search on my phone re VPN services, but it appears that a lot of them don't have servers in Russia.

Could someone explain what VPN is?
It’s a virtual private network. It basically lets you to connect to something you wouldn’t be able to without it! (For instance I have one on my work laptop that lets me get into my private work network from home or away.) For watching skating purposes: companies will sell you a service where they have a server in various countries around the world, and if you purchase it you connect to that and it makes your own computer look like you are in that country :) so you can watch a stream even if your country doesn’t have access to it. You can purchase them cheaply and connect instantly, but just make sure the service you buy has the country you want.

That’s a very un-technical explanation as I just woke up, but I hope it sort of makes sense

I highly recomend this VPN, it's the one I use and if you have any problem they have a nice customer service 24/7 and in case you are not satisfied they will give you a full refund if you cancel and ask for a refund within 30 days after you purchase the service

I have been using their service for the last 5 years and there is not any website that I could not watch ;)

Give it a try

Thanks so much. I will definitely check this out after cleaning up from Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. I really want to see the whole skating season. It is my passion. Can't imagine not seeing it at all !!! Where would be the joy of winter??

You can use VPN to disguise your IP address of your computer to something else. For example, if you want to watch Russian TV channels, ask the VPN provider to give you a Russian IP address. If the provider has a server in Russia, they re-route your internet traffic via this server.

There are tons of VPN providers around. However, you have to be careful.

  • If the subscription is too cheap, it's highly likely that they are collecting your private information and selling it to a third-party.
  • Some providers may not have enough bandwidths/servers which match your needs.

I use WiTopia. Very good. About $5.99 USD a month. I forgot to cancel my subscription last season when I realised I could watch the ISU stream and what a jolly good thing, it turns out.

Thank you for the recommendation (y)

..... I'm concerned that going to a streaming-only (and paid at that) model will kill the visibility of figure skating.....
...skating on TV is still more accessible and findable to many people.

Exactly. That was my whole point above. What the **** is so “inaccessible” about TV? I loved skating on Eurosport back in the day...with Simon & Chris...every single skater and very few commercial interruptions.

Exactly! I love your mom!

Here are a few VPN suggestions from a UBC student blogger: https://blogs.ubc.ca/reviews/best-vpn-canada/ Hard to believe we're reduced to this. Stupid ISU.

If I had to guess re the Canadian coverage, it will probably be like the 2007-08 season, where nothing will be figured out in time for the GP season and there will be no coverage except what NBC shows (plus bootleg/VPN stuff which at least is an alternative now) but something will be sorted out in time for Worlds. Not an ideal solution by any means though.

So are Russia (and Kazakstan) the only countries that we know are going to be streaming the GPs on their free online channels? Just want to make sure that if I buy a VPN it includes a server in said country. From some research it looks like a lot of the VPN services don't have a server in Russia anymore.

I’ve gone ahead and bought a VPN program that has a server in Russia. I’d like to try it out to be sure I can get the appropriate channel. Can anyone provide a test link?

I do not have Kazakstan, but do have Russia.
