ISU Provisional Allotments for 2024-2028

Hmm. I've been waiting for them to announce the host of 2027 worlds. As I've posted elsewhere I'm going to be on a leave of absence in the 2026-2027 school year. I plan to travel and want to take in a figure skating competition. Not sure between Europeans in Lausanne or worlds. My options might depend on the Canadian gymnastics schedule. Or maybe I can do both. Anyway I look forward to the opportunity and hope I can get some help from FSU when the time comes to plan my trip(s).

Interesting that according to the announcement, the dates of the grand prix competitions are different than traditionally. Skate America will be the 5th week. It's happened before, but it's a bit unusual.

Well, I don't think Abu Dhabi is all THAT close to the Silk Road, nor Bangkok, but it would still be nice to see a JGP come back to North America, but I suppose the Mexican fed can't be persuaded any more than the USFS or Skate Canada at this point.

Talk to the North American skating federations - there's an obvious lack of interest in hosting these events.

The Silk Roads also include maritime routes so the UAE and Thailand were in fact also part of the network of these trade routes.

The ISU Council also reviewed the “Combined World Championships” proposition, a forward-looking event concept that unites all four ISU disciplines under one consolidated championship model. A preferred bidder has been identified, with development andfeasibility work continuing into 2026. Formal confirmation of the Combined World Championships concept is targeted for spring 2026.

Interesting premise but I have a feeling it would go the route of the Olympics and pack more in between the figure skating with more days off between event segments. Which in turn would require 2 weeks of travel time and 2x the need for hotels. Of course they could still stick figure skating to the Wednesday-Saturday schedule, but I’m sure the idea wouldn’t be to give other events the ‘bad’ days.

I don't know what type of audience speed skating typically pulls in for Worlds, but I don't think the audience capacity for the oval in Milwaukee is very high?

I feel like the preferred bidder has got to be China/Beijing, right? I don't think any other country with an oval would want to take this logistics minefield on.

The only other possible bidder, IMO, would be SLC, as a test event for the 2034 Olympics. The 2030 French Alps Olympics are in the process of deciding whether or not they want to go to the expense of building a temporary speedskating oval or perhaps hold all the speedskating events in the Netherlands or Italy (pride, I'm sure, will have them plow forward with the temporary oval in Nice as submitted with their bid, just like pride had Italy plow forward with renovating their sledding track in Cortina instead of holding all the sledding events in Austria or Lake Placid).

Any chance Nordic countries could co-host Worlds 2028 together for the 4 disciplines?

Speed skating in Hamar, synchro in Helsinki, and figure skating in Malmö? They all have experience with hosting the different discipline recently at the respective places. I don´t know if the distances would be too far, but Nordic Worlds 2028 would certainly be an interesting concept.

Or possible Scandi Worlds 2028 and hosting in Norway and Sweden. Speed skating in Hamar, figure skating in Lillehammer and Synchro in Sweden?

Just looking through this thread to see which ISU Championships have been allocated for upcoming seasons and came across some older posts about bids for 2028 Euros & Worlds.

It doesn't look like the ISU had any bids for 2028 Jr Worlds and did not want to repeat Kaunas LTU as a Euros host, so they asked the Lithuanian fed about hosting 2028 Jr Worlds instead.

Interestingly, the ISU also didn't seem to care for the Polish fed's bid for 2028 Euros and asked the Swedish fed to organize it instead.

Those two decisions effectively have eliminated Kaunas & Malmo from the 2028 Worlds discussion. Who knows if Vienna or Dortmund are still in the mix with the ISU considering the combined Skating World Championships or if some other fed has entered the mix. We'll know when we know, lol.
