Smashed the world record for the free skate. And deservedly so. Malinin is an outlier. We may not see a skater like him for another 25 years. Possibly 50. I think he has surpassed Midori Ito as being the skater most technically ahead of their peers in history.

That said, Shun has to exceed his season best only by 50 points for the first place :respect:

I'm just gonna say it, the TES deserves to be out of this world. The total score deserves to be out of this world. But 92 PCS this was not. It's a total slam to the system to throw out those PCS because of 7 quads and rah rah, but an essentially non-program otherwise.

And yet here we are, judges excusing massive PCS which literally don't have a single criteria based on ability to do quads. The system is always broken but this is really bad.

That was a solid skate from Sato, but overshadowed by Malinin.

Sato doing a brilliant job of skating after Malinin. TBH I prefer Grassl, which surprises me, but the momentum of skating after Malinin may work in Sato's favor with higher GOE and PCS.

Wonderful from Sato, tiny fast rotating jumps and all. It's Firebird lite but he's really putting himself in the picture to be a very serious medal contender.

Wonderful skate for Shun. He seemed a little tight in the opening quadruple Lutz, but then settled down, and delivered perhaps the most complete program of his career.

194.02 = 3rd Place
292.08 = 2nd Place

Very well skated for Shun - should be enough to stay ahead of Grassl. The program lacks much fire, but he's certainly putting himself in the medal conversation for the Olympics.

As amazing as Malinin is (and he is amazing) I prefer Sato's program. It's a much more complete package. No errors that I could see. Jumps look good on replay.
