Gene Hackman had Alzheimers and died a week after his wife. His wife died of hantavirus. Very sad. Seems they were quite isolated.

Really not what I was expecting.

Hanta virus is a real issue in southern Colorado & northern New Mexico. Friends with a bunch of cabins on an old mining site had to hire a hazmat team to come in and clean out one of the unused cabins.

How terrible that he was wandering around the house alone that long after her death. He must have been so frightened and confused.

Sometimes people with Alzheimer's and their spouses cut themselves off from friends and family because they're embarrassed or afraid of being separated or can't admit how bad the situation has gotten. Because of his fame, Hackman and/or his wife might have been especially reluctant to have anyone see him in that state.

Advanced Alzheimer's could very well be why his children weren't in daily/weekly touch with him. If they were that isolated, his wife was likely managing his medications; it's unlikely he could manage them on his own. He didn't have anyone to be sure he was eating or drinking, either.

I don’t see this posted earlier, but I noticed that former U.S. Secret Service agent Clint Hill passed away last Friday. Hill was notably known for his actions during the JFK assassination and stayed on to be part of the details that protected Jackie, LBJ, and then Vice President Spiro Agnew. I think he was the last surviving Secret Service agent from that day and had expressed a lot of guilt from “not being able to get to the car faster”. I don’t think realistically he could have done much more to prevent what ultimately happened.

Kennedy was good to his agents, treated them with the respect & learned all their names. Hill was, actually, assigned to Mrs. Kennedy; he, like all the agents there that horrible day, never got over it. When awarded an acknowledgement for his efforts to protect Mrs. Kennedy & the President that day by pushing her back down into the limo, his response was something like," you donate your life to a cause & all they remember you for is the one time when everything went wrong."
