In Memoriam

There are lots and lots of tributes coming in following the announcement of Gordon Lightfoot's death. The CBC has updated the original article and it includes quotes from several of them: https://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/gordon-lightfoot-dead-1.6828991

There is a CBC documentary linked from the article - "Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind" - an exploration of the career, music, and influence of legendary Canadian musical icon Gordon Lightfoot.
You might need a VPN to watch it outside Canada: https://gem.cbc.ca/media/gordon-lig...RD_if-you-could-read-my-mind-gordon-lightfoot

I loved his music...........may he RIP. He will certainly not be forgotten. My favorites of his include: Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald; the Canadian RR trilogy and Summertime Dream (a really upbeat song).

Michael Palin pays tribute to his "dearest wife Helen [who] died peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday morning. She had been suffering with chronic pain for several years, which was compounded a few years ago by a diagnosis of kidney failure."
Wow...57 years....beautiful and sad.

Thanks. The documentary is available on Amazon Prime Video in the US

2017 100m World Champ and the winner of 3 medals at the 2016 Olympics, Tori Bowie passes away at 32.

Well that is tragic and I feel for her family. So fricking young... And I can't help it but the first thought that popped in my mind was Flo Jo.

RIP Roy Saltman---I had not heard of him and maybe you have not heard of him but he did an exhaustive study of new voting machines in 1988 and warned the country about something called "hanging chads." No one listened.

If you were ever into soaps and/or still are, Jackie Zeman, the actress who created the iconic character of Bobbie Spencer on General Hospital and was on and off the show for the last 45 years (last appearance last month), has passed at age 70.

ABC7 link to story.
45 years in the same role!

I stopped watching GH more than 25 years ago but I remember her well. RIP Jackie.

Not many knew about Paul Oberle, but he was a swimming instructor and diving legend. He was the founder of The Swim School in Shreveport and helped to start the Shreveport Fire Department's Dive Team. He also created the Scuba Rangers.

My condolences to his family and RIP, Paul. ❤️?

I am extremely upset about this. I don't know why as I wasn't a regular reader of Dooce's blog. But "Knock, knock motherf'er" from Beyonce, the enormous Rooster is something I laugh about to this day. She was a very funny and talented writer IMO.

Warning... mentions of suicide... (hence, the spoiler tags)

I've never read Heather Armstrong's blog, but I am sorry for her struggles. My condolences to her family and those who loved her.

Jenny Lawson, AKA the Bloggess, wrote about Beyonce the chicken. https://thebloggess.com/2011/06/21/and-thats-why-you-should-learn-to-pick-your-battles/

I haven't seen it anywhere so far but the amazing Grace Bumbry passed away earlier this month. She was 86.

My mom's best friend is a professional opera singer and happened to study under Bumbry for a couple of years in the 90s. They even recorded (?)/performed "Elektra" together with Bumbry singing the role of Clytemnestre and my mom's friend the "surveillante" in 1997.
I guess I don't have to say she has been absolutely devastated. Bumbry was her favorite teacher and also a friend for life.

You are correct about Beyonce. I don't read either blog regularly. One thing I loved about Dooce's blog was her "Monetizing the Hate" section where she responded to dumb emails she got from haters and any money made from ads on the page would go to charity. I thought was a pretty good way to deal with haters.
