I Have Got to Stay Out of Sephora (and other glamourpuss issues)

(((myhoneyhoney))) :(

This is why I put my own face as my avatar. It took me until I was 50 to build enough self esteem to finally say, I no longer give a shit about all the people who told me I was ugly. Their attitudes are uglier than my face so they can suck it. I refuse to hide anymore just so I don't offend people with my face.
Ha. :respec:

I had to wear my head gear all the time, and looked like I could pick up radio signals. And I had baby fine hair that my mother kept insisting I get permed.

:glamor: :scream:

My mom gave me a home perm. Once.
One day I had hair to my waist, the next it was a huge horizontal roll at my neck.
There are pictures, but not in my possession.

I have baby fine hair too. This is one reason I got the poodle perms. They'd be poodle-y for just a short while until the curl relaxed and then my hair just looked wavy. If I got a 'body wave' instead of a poodle perm, my hair would be flat as a board within 2 weeks as if I hadn't paid all that money for chemical processing.

Perm technology is a lot more advanced these days and I could get a perm that was a loose curl now and be okay. But I got tired of having to go in so often and also of getting that look where your hair is dead straight on top and then in sloppy curls on the bottom.

I had perms more as a styling tool than for the curls. I came of age in the post-Farrah era when feathered hair was a must, and noticeable product was frowned upon (and it was all noticeable back then - either for the coating on your hair or the intense smell). A perm helped you hold the look all day in the absence of hairspray. At some point everyone I knew started using mousse, which helped hold the style a bit more, and then finally some softer, unscented hairsprays came out and I stopped perming. Still have my trusty curling iron though :)

Your hair looks fine just as it is, quartz.

I had a few perms in high school; as the curly look was "in".
My hair was straight as a board.
They never lasted, since my hair was "resistant" and grew too fast.

My mom did a home perm once. It stank, and it did not work on my hair (my hair is straight, fine and flat).
I also did a 'wavy' perm while in college, it looked ok, but I don't have a single picture of it. This was before the camera phones....

Today I have discovered the magic of volumizing sprays and sea salt texture sprays... That said, I wish I knew how to curl my hair. I don't even own a curling iron. Has anyone tried one of those magic automatic curling irons?

@maatTheViking - I have not but there are some good reviews on youtube.

From watching tons of vintage hair videos, I learned that when using a curling iron you should like the curls cool down first and "pin curl" them afterwards to keep the curl for longer than a day.

Have you tried hot or steam rollers?

I got a perm during middle school. I wanted big curls like this, even cut out a picture out of those hairstyling mags. http://www.tophairstyle2015.com/body-wave-perm-long-hair/body-wave-perm-long-hair-7/#image-1

So my Mom took me to a salon in San Francisco and I ended up with this http://www.crushbeauty.com/curly-hairstyles/long-small-spiral-perm I was in tears. My almost waist length hair was cut off to chin length just to get rid of the mess a couple of weeks after. If I ever see that lady again, it'll take everything in my power not to sock her!

I have the Caruso steam rollers and like the jumbo rollers. It gives nice big bouncy curls. My problem with it is the curls only stay for less than half a day. I don't use hairspray or any style holder though.

I also only wore the head gear at night but got acne on my cheeks from the plastic that wrapped the wires. :p

And I had curly hair during the Christie Brinkley period. (Bitch is 61 and still making me look bad.) I slept with my hair in a topknot and four Heinz bean cans to straighten it.

You just reminded me of the 80's when my aunt used to copy Molly Ringwald's style. I copied Debbie Gibson and wore blue mascara.
I did the Pat Benetar look - not the hair but the tons of black winged eyeliner and the black leather headband. It actually worked on me cuz I was oh so cool! :smokin: :D

I have straight, fine hair without even a hint of wave or curl. I tried a home perm when I was in my early teens--terrible, it didn't work at all. My teen/college year coincided with the 80s trend of big, curly hair (even bigger because I lived on Long Island at that point). For about 5 years, I slept with my hair in 2 tight French braids every night. I'd take them out in the morning and have waves, if not actual curls. In my next life, I'd love to have curly hair . . . Guess you always want what you can't have! :-)

The amount of quality hair products for every hair type available now are so extensive.

I have natural kinky hair after having some type of curly perm or relaxer since my pre teens. I am still adjusting to my natural hair. Finding out what products give me the right amount of moisture, how to make my hair soft(it is very coarse and thick). The kinkier the hair, the less moisture/oil the hair naturally produces. I have tried to stay away from sulfates, parabens, mineral oil, petroleum. Natural hair(natural ingredients) products are so expensive but they are so much better for the hair whether you have kinky, straight or wavy/curly hair.

Also, I'm dealing with several different textures of hair on my head :(. My sides and front are coarser, thicker and more kinky than the back and crown of head. I've tried twist outs a few times with horrible results. I"m trying to keep it healthy so I do styles like this

I'm trying not to turn in to a product junkie but it is so hard. I've tried products from As I am, Jane Carter, Carol's Daughter, Shea Moisture, Oyin handmade, Karen's Body Beautiful. If your hair is not ask kinky as mine is, I highly recommend you try some products from this brand. Kinky-Curly's "knot today' is considered one of the best detangling conditioners on the market and it works on all types of hair.

steamrollers is something I discuss with my sons when we drive by road construction...? I had to look it up. How long do they have to be in the hair for? I couldn't sleep with rollers in, I tried sleeping with a bun to wave it, and it gave me a headache. I do sleep with a braid, but it makes the waves sort of regular.

I would prefer something that took 5 min, lol. Though normally twisting it and then maybe using some texture spray is ok, I would want to use curling for a night out being fancy, I guess.

For products, since I have fine, straight hair which gets easily weighed down, but also gets dry and frizzy, I use this https://www.birchbox.com/shop/beauty-protector-protect-and-oil
It is super awesome in my hair, doesn't weigh it down at all, and leaves it shiny. It is the best oil I have tried.
I do use John Frieda's blonde line for shampoo/conditioner. Whenever I try shampoos without sulfates, my hair does not feel clean in the same way. It is also reasonably priced. Birchbox often sends me shampoo samples, and looking at the price per oz is pretty scary. I have shampoo that works for me...

Pregnancy hormones are doing terrible things to my hair. I have spastically wavy hair that I normally flat iron every day, but now it's too curly to stay straight, and too straight to be curly. I'm at a total loss about what to do with it. I'm going for a trim next week and I'm hoping my stylist can help.
