I Have Got to Stay Out of Sephora (and other glamourpuss issues)

I don't know if anyone else has asked this question before, but:

Has anyone tried the L'Oreal Youth Code line? I understand that it is a lower cost version of Lancôme Genifique, and was wondering if there was a difference between the two.

GlamourPusses, I need advice. I have a few weekend trips coming up in airlines that charge for the first suitcase. Does anyone have advice on traveling with makeup in a carry on? I'm mostly concerned about CC creme/foundation. I know I have seen travel sized products (Laura Mercier comes to mind) at Sephora. Any advice?

If you like a very sheer finish, Maybelline Dream Finish BB cream comes in a 1 ounce size. Also Benefit makes some nice kits with all travel size products that feature their foundation (Some kind of gorgeous). You can usually purchase them online at Sephora.

I've tried the Youth Code Day/Night Cream. Its a very thick cream, so it feels nice on dry skin. I'd get it again. Can't say I saw any big difference in my skin, though. I've never used lancome so can't compare.

My mom wore Emeraude and my grandmother wore Jontue. I have fond memories of both. :)
Anyone remember Aphrodesia by Faberge?
The first fragrance I ever loved.

Some chemist tried to "recreate" it, years after it was discontinued.
He didn't have the slightest idea of what he was doing, IMO!

My new obsession is making my own body scrubs and face masks. Way cheaper than buying (I go through A LOT) and it's fun to play around with ingredients. Right now my fave is a whipped citrus scrub... I'm currently trying to perfect the recipe but I'm liking the progress I've made with it. This may be the start of an at-home/mail order business.... ;)

I made a lip scrub using just coconut oil and sugar and a bit of peppermint oil. I like it - though next time I will use superfine (baker's) sugar. I used Safeway organic cane sugar, and the crystals are quite large.

Check that the stuff you are using are not less than 100ml / 3 oz. My CC creme is. I use some reusable 3 oz containers for my shampoo, though many brands sell travel sizes. I can fit a lot of stuff (including 2 bottles of nail polish + base and top coat) into a quart bag... Make sure anything that is not a gel or liquid goes somewhere else, so you have more room (for instance nail polish remover pads, makeup wipes. I have never had any trouble with those in carryon).

Check the department store counter for your favorite brand, especially if you soon is running out. The Macy's Clinique counter people in the less busy Macy's are always great at giving extra samples, especially if you say you are travelling. I saved a few of the little pots they give out. For things like eye cream and CC cream you don't need a lot.
I usually bring sample size moisturizer, same for hand cream. For body lotions and such I just use what the hotel has.

It has rained here every day for the last two weeks. That is significantly more than usual, and the river that runs through our city is at flood stage, but on to what really matters: my hair is a giant ball of frizz. What products should I try?

If you have fine hair, the John Freida Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Touch Up Cream should work. If it doesn't, you haven't spent a lot of money.

To eliminate the frizz, I like:
Wet hair
Davines Defining Relaxing Fluid
Its a 10 Miracle Leave In Product
Kenra Lock and Hold (if humidity is really bad)

Can use to pat down dry hair
Kenra Silkening Gloss

The Moroccan oil intense curl defining cream helps my hair in the humidity. Nothing eliminates frizz entirely. Rob, what's Kenra?

I finally found s perfume too feck-me-oriental even for me. I got a fer sample with a macys order of Versace Eros. It wasn't bad at first but then it started smelling like Donatella looks. :scream:

They say the best for frizz control is apple cider vinegar rinse and carbonated water rinse.

Recently I thought I'd try doing an inexpensive "facial" at home. It seems effective, so I've repeated it a couple times.

Here are the steps/products, if anyone's interested. I first wash my face with Cetaphil cleansing lotion. I dry my skin, then apply Origins Modern Friction as an exfoliator. Lightly massage it for a few moments. Rinse & dry skin, then use a little toner to refresh. Last step--I apply Burt's Bees Intense Hydration Treatment Mask with Clary Sage. You're supposed to put on a thick coat of this mask and let it sit 5-10 minutes. You can wipe off the excess, but I find it just absorbs into my skin.

This treatment does seem to have a nice calming/plumping effect on my skin. I'm liking the Burt's Bees products right now; they seem to work well on my skin.

They didn't even need to go to the expense of paying someone to name their perfumes. Should have started with "Cheap Ho #1 and on down the line. IMO, everything Versace looks like Donatella-Cheap, tawdry, and busted.

There is a perfume named "Plumber's crack" I imagine it smells better.

Cass, do you use that sunscreen just for yourself, or for your kids too? I have yet to try a spray sunscreen with my kids, I worry that it won't be full coverage, or won't work or something.

We use the spray on the older kids (5+) all the time. Banana Boat Sport is the current favorite. We have the boys cover their faces with a towel then we spray away. It seems to work just as well as the cream and it takes half the time. When it's hot, the kids like the cooling feeling of the spray. The older kids (10 and 7) do their own faces with an "eye safe" cream.

If your child has any sensitives to chemicals in products or super sensitive skin, skip the spray sunscreens.

DS can't use it at all....Breaks out in welts. It is something to do with the spray itself. He breaks out with some cream sunscreens too but not nearly as bad as a spray.

I use California baby sunscreen (cream) on him and it's fine.

We used Coppertone Water Babies sunscreen lotion for Mini Habs, and I use Coppertone lotion on myself. I don't like spray sunscreens and find they don't work as well (Mr. Habs likes the spray). My doctor told me once to not use an SPF higher than 30, so we usually stick to the 15-30 range and reapply often.

That was my understanding about SPF as well. The number indicates how much longer it will take to burn, so if you normally start to get pink after 1/2 hour, a 30 (if reapplied as directed) will allow you to spend 15 hours in the sun. Higher SPF doesn't help much, unless you're going for a zinc oxide total block as recommended for people who work outdoors.

Really? I've never heard of SPF lasting that long. Unless it really does and the constant reapplication is just sunscreen companies trying to get us to buy more?

The Skin Cancer Foundation says no sunscreen is effective for longer than 2 hours (so you must reapply): http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/sun-protection/sunscreen/sunscreens-explained

I found this link with a graphic to calculate exposure depending on skin color and SPF: http://brenditasbodyworks.com/shop/...Long-Can-You-Last-In-TheSun-And-Still-Be-Safe

I've heard that too but I can reapply regularly all I want and I will burn with SPF 30 or lower. I usually stick to SPF 45 or 60 and do much better though I still have to reapply every half hour or 45 minutes. I'm really fair though.

@vesperholly You quoted my original post "a 30 (if reapplied as directed)". I did not say a single application of a 30 would allow you to stay out all day.

Is there such a thing as tinted moisturizer for legs? I'm getting my golf tan, but some areas could use a bit of help, but not enough to warrant self tanner.

My hairdresser talked me into becoming a blonde today :) I absolutely love it though I'd never have chosen this light a blonde for myself.
I thought I had gone too light the last time, but I think I want more now :D
I tried a toner that made my hair slighly pink and I loved it! The pink was gone with the first wash though...
Now I'm torn between strawberry blonde, trying the grey fad, going pastel pink...

I went to get red streaks in my hair (i'm blonde). Well, my hair dresser (new to this location) went and made it more like red highlights, and it looks awesome. If hair grew out two-toned this is what it would look like.
The hair dresser was a lady, probably in her 50s, and clearly knew what she was doing.

I also just ordered some more expensive serum from Sephora, and I am now VIB. Umm...
