Hurricane Harvey coming at Texas

I think the wall is going out the window.

There is now a quarter of a trillion dollar gorilla sitting in the room.......

We're still under a flash flood advisory in Desoto Parish. Nothing has changed much ... steady rain and thunderstorms, wind gusts still up to 30 MPH. Water is about a 4th of the way under my carport, but nothing bad enough to endanger my home. It has covered the bottom of my handicap ramp which is nothing unusual. It's been that way before and it's nothing unusual for me.

I have some good news especially for the town of Logansport, Joaquin, TX which is right on the other side of the Sabine River, and any other areas close to the Sabine River.

The Sabine River Authority has opened all 11 floodgates at Toledo Bend lake by one foot to alleviate flooding due to the water rising. So it looks like Logansport may get a break from the river flooding. Hopefully no one will have to evacuate that lives close to the river.

Arkema chemical plant expected to explode within the week.

I googled it to learn more and came across an article that also mentions that Shell reported that 100 pounds of a solvent and 100 pounds of a benzene were released from a facility and Exxon reported that 15 pounds of benzene were released from their facility. As if Houston didn't have enough on their plate, they'll now have to deal with additional chemical spills :( https://www.cbsnews.com/news/risk-of-explosion-at-chemical-plant-flooded-by-harvey-in-crosby-texas/

It's nuts that these plants are allowed in a flood zone. And the (lack of) zoning that allowed such a vast area to be paved over is reckless.

Well, there's a nuclear power plant sitting on top of the San Andreas Fault, so I can't say that I'm surprised at the plants' location. Doesn't make it any less nuts though and it doesn't make what is to come any less horrible or devastating :(

Amazing (and scary) photo of I-10, east of Houston, before and after the storm.

I saw the photo on twitter earlier and wanted to check if this was real or fake but haven't gotten around to it yet. I suppose that answers that question. It is completely insane!

I have not read the article yet, but I am about to leave work. Rachel Maddow had mentioned it on her show.

From what I heard about the Akema plant (on msnbc), they have a material (or may be materials) that must be kept under refrigeration, which is not happening for the obvious reason. Without refrigeration it could explode.

The problems are going to become extremely complex. So sad.

Perhaps I should have checked it on Snopes.com before posting that link. :)

Large plants are situated at harbors or rail centers for a reason. My guess is that it was there long before the surrounding area was built up.

The models giveth, the models taketh away.

Latest GFS model doesn't have a tropical system in the Gulf. Instead, it has a major hurricane slamming into southern New England night of September 9th.

It's always something....

I just heard a report on the radio where a Houston area doctor was pleading for help checking on diabetics who may have stayed behind. He was concerned about those without properly refrigerated insulin as well as those who have run out and are eating whatever they have. From the report, it sounds like the Cajun navy is going to help out.

More light news - you know how the weather channel has a whole bunch of pictures up at the same time that you can't really see? One was a guy rescuing a baby deer. Where do the rabbits and deer and other non-water wildlife go?

Thanks for sharing all the updates, y'all. Well, everything is okay here in the city limits of Mansfield. The water is no longer in my driveway or underneath my carport. There's only about of 15% chance of rain today and the winds are about 10 MPH. I was actually able to go outside to get my mail. No sunshine yet, but it will definitely be here tomorrow.

Sharing some of the flooding from Sabine Parish which is right below my Parish. These videos are of Many, La., Hwy 171 South, The State fairgrounds and ballpark flooding, etc. Many and surrounding areas is 35 miles southeast from where I live and close to Toledo Bend Lake.

Angie, that's a good sign if you are still getting mail delivery!
Isn't that the truth! I'm so glad that my driveway is no longer flooded. It was about 1/4 of the way up my handicap ramp underneath my carport around 10:30 p.m. It left a mark on the ramp of how high it did get which was about 5 or 6 inches. It was still too low to get into my house because it's almost 2 feet off the ground. I have two steps I have to go up to get into my home. That's why I had to have the handicap ramp since I can't go up the steps with a walker.

I fear we already know the answer.

Scott Pruitt's EPA is doing a bang up job of protecting polluters. I don't know how that man faces a mirror every morning.

Texas Republicans Helped Chemical Plant That Exploded Lobby Against Safety Rules

http://www.ibtimes.com/political-ca...cal-plant-exploded-lobby-against-safety-rules
The French company whose Houston-area chemical plant exploded twice on Thursday successfully pressed federal regulators to delay new regulations designed to improve safety procedures at chemical plants, according to federal records reviewed by International Business Times. The rules, which were set to go into effect this year....
were blocked by EPA administrator Scott Pruitt. ... Documents reviewed by IBT show that Pruitt’s announcement followed a lobbying campaign by Arkema and its colleagues in the chemical industry.

And now we the taxpayers will fund the cleanup.
